the amazing things you'll be doing
Despite the exponential growth in international travel, Mongolia has remained one of the few fascinating places that has escaped the trampling boots of thousands of travellers.

An attractive destination for those looking for a unique combination of primordial landscapes and nomadic culture, almost vanished elsewhere in the world, Mongolia has held on to the old ways while sampling the new.

Mongolia’s nomads have retained their traditions since the days of Chinggis Khan’s empire, while services and facilities for travelers have taken big strides to improve the level of service and quality of infrastructure.

A visit to Mongolia – the land of spectacular scenery and remarkable history - is a unique experience unlike any other.

Best time to go: These treks have set departure dates (see below) but can also be tailormade. The climate is continental. The coldest month is January and the temperature falls anywhere from -25 to -40C. The hottest month is July and the temperature rises to anywhere between 20 and 30C. The average annual precipitation is 200-220 mm.

Our Mongolia trekking holidays

Trekking the Orkhon Valley, introductory trekking. Departing 16 Jun 2009
From US $2209 - US $2842 (14 days) ex flights. Single supplement US $253
Throughout history, from prehistoric times until the beginning of the last century, the Orkhon Valley has been a major center of life for Mongolians. Capital cities have risen and fallen, monks have meditated here, kings have been buried and nomads have settled their felt tents next to the water of the Orkhon River. We will be following the river past ancient monasteries, waterfalls, and the 'Eight Lakes' National Park. While trekking, yak carts carry your luggage.

Includes expedition style camping or stays with local families, where formal washing and toilet facilities may not be available. May include full-day hikes or rides (4 to 6 hours) over moderate terrain and occasional steep trails, or long driving distances on rough roads.

Trekking the Kharkhira, moderate trekking. Departing 6 Jun 2009
From US $3486 - US $4362 (16 days) ex flights. Single supplement US $282 & domestic flights US $558
Take a fascinating journey through Western Mongolia - an untouched heaven of big lakes, high mountains, gorgeous landscapes and the largest diversity of both wildlife and ethnicities in Mongolia. The Kharkhira mountain range, with snow-capped peaks of over 3000 meters, waterfalls, ancient burial sites, mountaintop lakes and its nomadic based communities is a great place to explore Mongolian culture and landscapes - way off the beaten path.

Significant expedition style camping or family stays. May include full-day hikes (up to 6 hours) or rides over challenging terrain, long driving distances over rough unpaved roads, or challenging weather conditions, including extremes of temperature.
travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
Our treks are designed to take our guests well off the beaten path, to parts of Mongolia not reached by the casual tourist. In this way, our guests can not only experience these untouched and beautiful regions but local people in remote areas also have the opportunity to earn an income from protecting the local environment and providing services to visitors.

We use local rangers from the protected areas as our guides to support the preservation of areas with rare wildlife and wildflowers by providing a supplemental income to rangers who receive below-subsistence incomes and lack budgets for travel to visit the areas they are supposed to patrol. We also hire all horsemen, local guides and pack animals from the areas we visit. We also stay with local people where possible, bringing in supplies hard to obtain in remote areas. The accommodation charges for these family stay nights go to local families.

Orkhon Valley on Mongolia trekking holidayBy traveling with us you will help support people who keep alive and contribute to the livelihoods of herders and trades people in rural Mongolia. Because of our committment to responsible travel, all guides on our trips are Mongolians. The guide is after all the person you will spend the most time with on your trip, and we believe it is important that your guide be a local person in order to give you the best possible sense of Mongolian culture, traditions, and customs, as well as first hand knowledge about the environment, wildlife, economics, or whatever your interest may be. All our guides are trained in Leave No Trace Principles.

We invest a great deal into our guide training program in order to enable our team to function at a professsional level that allows us to give staff opportunities for promotion, and our staff is paid well above national average wages.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
