the amazing things you'll be doing
An unmissable journey through one of Brazil´s most beautiful states.

From an unspoilt, super romantic, tropical island paradise with miles of sun kissed beach to the spectacular table top mountains of Bahia´s Chapada Diamantina and onto the state´s beating heart of Salvador.

When you arrive in Salvador, you´ll transfer to light aircraft for the remainder of your journey. This short flight down the beautiful Bahian coastline is a treat in itself, but your destination is the real gem. When you land on the island´s grass airstrip, you´ll be shown to your private bungalow on this ultra relaxing, tropical island paradise.

Dense Atlantic rainforest, sand dunes & mangroves contrast with a coast line of unspoilt, deserted, reef sheltered beaches. There are no cars on this wonderful island which is only accessible by boat or light aircraft. You’ll stay in your own private beach house where every morning on your veranda, you’ll be served perhaps the best breakfast anywhere in Brazil. During your stay, on a morning that suites you, you´ll be collected from your bungalow by your guide and island local, and spend the rest of the day exploring the local coastline and river delta by boat. You´ll be able to snorkel in natural, reef sheltered pools, water ski, head up river for fresh water oysters and even get the chance to stop for a caipirinha at a reef side floating bar. This is a super romantic, sun kissed island which you´ll find very hard to leave behind.

After an ultra relaxing week on the coast you´ll head inland to Bahia´s spectacular interior and the Chapada Diamantina. Lying due west, this is a land of underground rivers, caves, table-top mountains and spectacular waterfalls. You’ll stay in a charming colonial town nestled in this unspoilt, dramatic landscape from where you are perfectly placed to explore this beautiful region. You’ll be met in Salvador by your Brazilian guide who for the duration of your trip will make sure you get the very best out of this stunning National Park. Hiking, searching for hidden waterfalls, exploring caves and swimming in crystal clear pools will also give you an appetite to eat in one of the great restaurants dotted around the town.

No trip to Bahia is complete without visiting the city of Salvador. Originally Brazil´s capital, this is a fantastically rich and vibrant city. Once the centre of the slave trade in Brazil it has grown into wonderfully diverse cultural centre. As a result, there is a great deal to pack into your stay here. From watching impromptu displays of capoeira - the Brazilian martial art created by the African slaves of the 16th century, to attending Candomble rituals, an African religion with deep roots in the city. Your colonial pousada is close to the Pelourinho (the old historic centre of the city) and offers the perfect base from which to explore. During your stay, on a morning that suites you, you´ll be collected from your bungalow by your guide and Salvador local and spend the next few hours being shown the best bits of the city. This is the perfect way to round off your journey through the beautiful state of Bahia.
travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
All the hotels we use are locally owned and run. We also only ever use local guides. This not only benefits the surrounding community and boosts the local economy; it also ensures that our clients have a more authentic experience during their trip. On our chosen island destination off the coast of Bahia, we fully back the concepts adopted by AMABO – a local NGO - which aims to develop tourism in a way which minimises negative effects on the environment whilst maximising benefits to the local community.

AMABO’s objectives include the promotion of social, cultural and economic development without putting the local environment in danger. The organisation has been instrumental in securing donations of medicines and supplies for the local Public Health Clinic, has raised almost £10,000 towards the restoration of the local church, and also runs vocational courses for island residents which include motor boat mechanics, fish smoking techniques, cookery, waiting and chambermaid courses. In addition to this, it is also concerned with the development of realistic, sustainable ecotourism which provides an invaluable boost the economy of this small island community. This kind of ecotourism aims to makes use of, in a sustainable manner, the natural and cultural resources of the local area. It also aims to form an environmental consciousness, stimulate local conservation and promote the well-being of the local population. AMABO also runs local community education courses similar to those financially supported by us in Rio de Janeiro.

Owned & run by a Brazilian, the small, 4 bungalow pousada we use on the island does its part to maximise the positive impact it has on the local area in various ways. The pousada relies on the sea breeze as opposed to electricity to air condition its rooms as well as using the sun to heat its showers. Both of these measures have a huge impact on its levels of energy consumption. In addition, all the staff employed at the pousada are island locals, many of whom have learnt their trade through attending courses run by AMABO.

Our chosen guide in the Chapada Diamantina - as well as being a local - is fiercely protective of the local environment. He is incredibly knowledgeable and leaves all our clients with a fantastic understanding of the local environment and community as well as good understanding of why preservation and sustainable ecotourism are key factors in maintaining this unique area for future generations.

£20 from every holiday we sell goes to support a project run by Regua aimed at protecting and replanting the Atlantic rain forest in Rio state and a Rio based NGO which provides educational courses for the community of Vidigal – one of the city´s favelas or slums.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
