the amazing things you'll be doing
The former school house in Mosstrond is situated on the island of Hovden, on Lake Mossvatn, a truly unique location for this wonderful winter activity week. The fabulous setting, in the middle of a frozen lake and on the edge of the Hardangervidda National Park, provides the perfect playground for fun in the snow. The island is accessible by multi-person snowmobile, just one of the memorable experiences that awaits guests of the Mosstrond Turisthytte. You will be introduced to the delights of winter activities, including snowshoeing, cross country skiing, dog sledding and even ice fishing. This trip offers the chance of total immersion in the magnificent Norwegian winter whilst still being able to enjoy an excellent meal and a warm, comfortable bed at the end of the day.

Environment:
We have at our offices worked to reduce our carbon footprint through a reduction of energy use and energy conservation measures. We also actively reduce the waste produced by having active reduction and recycling policies in place. We run annual staff workshops on Responsible Tourism. Global warming is a reality and to help you make a difference by reducing the carbon dioxide that is produced when you travel we offer a chance to carbon balance your flights. We encourage all our clients to do this and do so for all our staff travel. Go on do your bit! Our guide, Philip, leads small groups on traditional activities such as cross country skiing and snowshoeing which have a low impact on the environment. The importance of respecting the natural surrounding natural habitat plays an important part in the choice of route, while Philip also instructs groups on how to behave should the group cross local wildlife. Community: We operate this activity trip in a way that minimises its impact on the environment and generates income for the local community, to which our local operator contributes greatly. Following the closure of the boarding school the decision by a group of friends, including our hosts Philip and Maiken Yatman, who’s children had attended the school, to bring it back to life welcoming tourists to the island has preserved an important feature of the local community. Supplies for the Turisthytte are bought locally, generating money for the local community, and thanks to the investment and refurbishment the school building continues to be used as a community centre by people in the area and remains an important part of the cultural activities taking place on the island year round. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
