the amazing things you'll be doing
From the borders of Italy and Austria the spectacular peaks of the Julian Alps flow deep into Slovenia. The majority of the area falls within the protection of the Triglav National Park, named after Slovenia's highest peak, Mount Triglav (2864m).

Similar in appearance to the Dolomites, these dramatic limestone peaks are dotted with half-timbered villages where we can see the traditional way of life.

On this unique holiday we explore the endless cross-country trails in the Triglav National Park, accompanied by qualified local guides.

With over 400km of prepared trails for all levels, we ski amid peaceful spruce forests with stunning views towards the Julian Alps and the Triglav massif. Routes begin outside our pension, following alongside the Sava Bohinjska river and on the Pokljuka plateau (1300m). We stay just outside the renowned lakeside town of Bled in Selo pri Bledu, in a beautiful position on the edge of the National Park. Optional activities include downhill skiing, self-guided snowshoeing and exploring scenic Bled.

Trip details: Multi-grade skiing is available each week. Grade 1 (beginners) and grade 2 weeks (intermediates) will be mostly track skiing. Group size is 4-16 people. Minimum age 14 years. Included in the price are return flights from Gatwick to Ljubljana, airport transfers (group flights only), 7 nights half board accommodation, 6 days cross-country skiing guiding/instruction and ski hire, and one cross-country leader per grade.

Accommodation: 2 star pension. The Pension Lukanc is situated just outside the centre of historic Bled, set amid splendid scenery surrounded by woodland with alpine views. The pension has a bar with a spacious terrace and we are sure to experience traditional Slovenian cuisine at the homemade dinners and breakfasts. Twin bedded and single rooms all have private facilities, with most having balconies and mountain views. We include two free evening transfers each week into the fascinating town of Bled.

how this holiday makes a difference
Our cross-country skiing holidays in general avoid large alpine ski areas, and are less dependent on snow cannons, graded pistes and ski lifts, creating significantly less environmental impact than alpine skiing holidays. Using skis that are longer and lighter than alpine skis, our cross-country day tours explore the magical scenery and tranquillity of the natural winter environments. Journeys further afield use public transport as much as possible, and the local economy benefits from our groups purchasing supplies directly.

Visiting Bled on Triglav cross-country skiing holiday, SloveniaIn Slovenia we work with a local company which supplies all the staff and guides on this trip. The guides are all qualified and are a very good source of information not just about the best places to ski but also about Slovenia in general. Accommodation is in a family-owned pension.

We have teamed up with Friends of Conservation to support projects at Ranthambore, India, Nava Kiran Orphanage, Nepal and on the edge of the Masai Mara, Kenya.

Water consumption in our UK office has been reduced by 30% since 2005, and the range of materials recycled by the office has been broadened. All electricity is supplied from renewable sources such as combined heat and power, and hydroelectric, and regular audits are carried out to compare our energy consumption with received benchmarks set up by the Carbon Trust.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
