Our remote Nepal treks
Upper Mustang Trek From £1220 (17 days) ex flights. Max alt: 4135m. Group size: 2-12. Best season : Mar-Nov. Daily trekking: 4-7hrs.
Trekking into Upper Mustang is a rare and privilege opportunity, you can experience the true life of the real mountain people in Nepal. In many ways, trekking into the Upper Mustang area is similar to trekking in to Tibet, which geographically it is a part of. Mustang, a land where the soul of man is still considered to be as real as the feet he walks on, while the land itself is almost treeless, barren landscape with a countryside similar to Tibetan plateau, but where beauty and happiness flourishes, in spite of hardship.
This was part of the Tibetan Kingdom of Gungthang until 1830's. The fabled medieval wall city of Lo Monthang, unofficial capital of Mustang still remains a kingdom within a kingdom; its full of culture and religious heritage. The early history to Lo Monthang is embellished in myth and legend rather than the recorded fact. Mustang has maintained its status as a separate principality until 1951. The king of Lo Monthang still retains his title and he has been given the honorary rank of Colonel in the Nepalese Army.
Manaslu Trek From £1068 (21 days) ex flights. Max alt: 5215m. Group size: 2-12. Best season : Mar-May & Oct-Nov. Daily trekking: 4-7hrs.
Trekking around Manaslu offers a unique opportunity to experience a reasonably "untouched" region of Nepal. This region of Nepal sees few trekkers, which makes a visit here more exclusive and unspoiled. Manaslu trekking has been open since 1991, it provides spectacular beauty along the border of Nepal and Tibet and is now a controlled trekking route, allowing organized trekking groups special permits to gain entry into this region to venture round its spectacular circuit.
Manaslu has a unique environment, which is exceptionally rich in bio diversity that has made this region one of the finest tourist destinations of Nepal for many years. The majestic Himalayan ranges in this area consist of cultural diversities and natural scenery with high altitude romantic glacier lakes and fascinating flora and fauna, all features of this region, have made it one of the most well liked places of Nepal.
Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek From £1220 (28 days) ex flights. Max alt: 5525m. Group size: 2-12. Best season : Mar-May & Oct-Nov. Daily trekking: 4-6hrs.
"Kang-chen-zod-nga", meaning "Five Great Treasuries of the Snow", actually it has seven major summits. To the locals Kanchenjunga which stands at a height of 8585meters, the third highest mountain in the world, is the abode of gods who bestow prosperity and goodwill on them and their lands, while to the climbers of this mountain the phrase "Five Great Treasuries of the Snow" takes on a slightly more ominous tone. The avalanches that Kanchenjunga throws down are said to be the largest anywhere!
Since the locals worship the mountain, there is a tradition among mountaineers not to stand on the actual summit. All "successful" assaults have stopped just short of the summit honouring an old promise made by the leader of the first successful attempt in 1955 to the maharaja of Sikkim.
Kanchenjunga lies on the eastern border of Nepal providing a great chance to experience remoteness, spectacular mountain scenery, diverse flora and fauna and rich local culture, quite different to those found further west. We begin the journey to Kanchenjunga with a flight from Kathmandu to Taplejung (Suketar). From Suketar the trek leads to Chauki through the villages of Mitlung, Ghunsa, Khambachen and Lhonak to Pangpema (5140 meters) which is also the Base Camp for expeditions attempting the North Face of Kanchenjunga 2 and the culmination of the first part of the trek.
Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek From £1017 (21 days) ex flights. Max alt: 5360m. Group size: 2-12. Best season : Mar-May & Oct-Nov. Daily trekking: 5-8hrs.
Dhaulagiri, 8167 meters 7th highest mountain in the world, means "white mountain" though many mountains over the world have names, which translate to White Mountain; this is without doubt the most astonishing one. This is a strenuous trek, through high alpine pastures, higher passes and serene and uninhabited valleys. Everyone is familiar with the name Dhaulagiri which is in the western part of Nepal, probably the best spot for remote and adventurous trekking in Nepal. The simple reason behind it is that it consists of more than fifteen 7000-meter magnificent peaks with land of dramatic contrast.
This trekking routes starts after an 8 hour scenic drive from Kathmandi to Beni, from Beni you head in a north-westerly direction through the villages of Babichour, Dorbang and Darapani to Muri, from where you head north still keeping to the banks of the Myagdi Khola. Muri is the last major settlement along this trail and is inhabited by people of the Magar tribe, of Mongoloid stock and descended from the early settlers of the Nepalese middle hills. From Muri, you head north along the Myagdi Khola through the villages of Baghara, Dobang and Chartare to Pakoban. Beyond Pakoban there are no permanent settlements. Still heading north you skirt the Chhanbardan Glacier, keeping on its left side, to reach the Dhaulagiri Base Camp from where magnificent mountain vistas are available.
Head north-east from the Base Camp and climb the steep incline to the French Pass (5,360 meters), between Tukche Peak (6,920 meters) and Sita Chuchura (6,611meters). Heading east you descend a little and pass through a portion of the Hidden Valley and climb to Thapa Pass (5,250 meters), between Tukche Peak and Thapa Peak (6,012 meters) from where you begin your descent, heading south-east to Alubari. From Alubari, the trail further descends to the village of Marpha on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, and then heads north to Jomsom from where you fly back to Pokhara. For those who have got enough time there is an option of continuing to trek down to Kalopani, Tatopani, Ghorepani then into Pokhara.
Upper Dolpo Trek - Mysterious land From £1652 (25 days) ex flights. Max alt: 5360m. Group size: 2-12. Best season : Mar-Nov. Daily trekking: 5-8hrs.
Dolpo, a land beyond the Himalaya, conjures up visions of mysterious monasteries, snow leopards and blue sheep, it is situated in the western part of the country, and is one of the most remote regions in Nepal. The Dolpo region is a very isolated area which has been strictly off-limits until only recently, so the traditions and way of life have remained intact. In the autumn of 1990 the first British tour operator organized a trek from east to west, from Pokhara to Jumla through Lower Dolpo.
This trekking routes passed many gigantic mountain ranges - Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba, to name but a few - and passed through Lower Dolpo, at one time a small kingdom in its own right. More recently we have repeated the route, with variations and our groups see very few other Europeans so they are enthused greatly about the wild remoteness, the stunning mountain scenery and the fact that the local people had that innocent friendliness peculiar to people who live in excessively remote mountainous regions. The people that live here number only a few hundred and are among the world's highest dwellers. The villages in Upper Dolpo are 4,300meters and above. It is here specifically that people still practice the pre-Buddhist Bon Po religion. This early sect was almost entirely replaced after Buddhist doctrine began to spread across Tibet in the 9th century.
Peter Matthiessen's The snow leopard and David Snellgrove's Himalayan Pilgrimage have contributed to the mystique and attraction of Dolpo. Both writers visited the Shey Gompa, to the north of the Phoksumdo Lake, inner Dolpo. This is the goal of most trekkers but this Dolpo trek will take you even further into this mysterious land.

There are many parts of Nepal into which the entry of foreigners is strictly controlled. Each of our Remote Treks in Nepal requires a Restricted Area Permit with each varying in price as to the remoteness of the regions. We only offer a limited amount of places for these areas of trekking to protect the ecological surroundings. All permit fees go to designated National Parks, Wildlife Reserve and Conservation Areas to improve trekking routes and trails.
Environmental groups are pressuring the government to keep some places closed for ecological reasons to avoid both cultural and environmental degradation, which we support. Before our Remote Area Treks commences our guide will brief group members on the importance of conservation in the environment as part of our responsible tourism efforts. All our staff are from local communities and villages. Our guides are English speaking and have years of experience as they live locally, displaying a wealth of knowledge in the remote areas of Nepal. You will be made to feel like one of the family as they share with you many fascinating stories. Their insight to the local people and customs will amaze you. Each guide comes fully equipped and supported by us, having obtained the following training in the related tourism sectors including Ministry of Tourism in Nepal, High Altitude First Aid and Environmental issues for Nepal. We choose our transportation suppliers on a rotational basis and use different ones in each area to ensure that the money we bring in is distributed evenly throughout the community. All local vehicles used for transportation are serviced frequently in addition we fully comply with Government Road Worthy standards. This ensures minimal gas emissions are lost from our vehicles, poorly maintained or malfunctioning vehicles can release as much as 10 times the emissions of a well-maintained vehicle. We understand and appreciate the hard work the guides and porters perform. Therefore we treat and obey the following Guide & Porter Policy to ensure the conditions for our guides and porters are of a humane standard. We work towards eliminating avoidable illness, injury and death. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
