introduction to Volunteer with children in China
The name says it all really…you’ll be working at the Yangzhou Lucky Kids Kindergarten with young Chinese children. Lucky Kids Kindergarten is located in a large and colourful building and you can feel the fun atmosphere as soon as you walk into the entrance hall. Whether you want to work in early years education, or if you'd just rather teach English at a more basic level, this project is the one for you. You'll be teaching and caring for younger children from ages 3-6, so bring a big smile and your creativity...
What you'll gain from doing this project
This is a lovely project which you'll thoroughly enjoy. The walls at the Kindergarten are covered in drawings, paintings and murals done by and for the children and each room is filled with equipment to assist the children’s learning. The Kindergarten requires volunteers to assist 5 hours a day for 2-3 days a week. So, you will need to combine your work at the Kindergarten with teaching at a school to fill up your hours. We can arrange for you to work with the very youngest children at a primary school if your preference is to work with very young children.
You'll usually teach lessons of your own design, giving you lots of freedom although you’ll usually have a Chinese teacher present in the classroom with you to assist you. The Kindergarten has stressed that playing games is the most important thing to do, although you do need to be careful with safety as the children are so young and get over-excited very easily! If you play an instrument and wish to bring it with you to play to the children, please do so. The Kindergarten is also interested in having volunteers who can work on arts & crafts with the kids.
The Kindergarten opens from 8am – 5pm every day, but you will only work 5 of these hours. Approximately 50 children attend, and there will be around 12 children in each group. The children are aged between 3-6 but you will mostly be working with the older age ranges. There are already 2 English teachers at the school so your lessons will compliment theirs.
You don’t need any language skills to take part in the project, but as the children are so young and don’t have very good command of English yet, it would be of benefit to you to know as much as possible. Take lessons or use a tape and book before you leave, or speak to your Project Co-ordinator if you’d like to take some Mandarin Lessons before or during your project. Many of our volunteers start their time in China with a week in Shanghai where they do our one-week Intensive Mandarin Course.
Your weekends and evenings will be free and this will allow some time for relaxing, travelling and sightseeing. If you would like more time to travel during or after your teaching, either let Travellers know before you leave, or speak to Tim, our Yangzhou Organiser, and she will try to arrange it with the Kindergarten; we cannot guarantee that this will be possible, but we will be as flexible as circumstances allow.
Your accommodation will either be on school campus or in a local hostel. All food is provided.
What you'll gain from doing this project
-

- The enormous satisfaction of helping children and knowing that you made a difference to them.
- New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
- An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
- And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!
the project
Your work will mostly focus around teaching the children some basic English through games, songs, stories and other fun activities. You may also be asked to help out in caring for the children (ie accompanying them to the toilet, helping them get ready for nap time etc) and playing with the children when they do sports, games and activities such as colouring or playing in the ball pit. However, your main role is that of an English teacher. For more details about this project, please see below. This is a lovely project which you'll thoroughly enjoy. volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference

Community
Volunteering to assist teachers in school, kindergartens, care homes etc is always a rewarding volunteer experience. Principally because your efforts directly influence education of local children and adults and this project in China is no different. By lending your time to this project you’ll be helping children from the local area enhance their English skills and understanding of different cultures. Kindergartens / Pre-schools / Nurseries are so important for families, because they enable parents to continue to work whilst their children are too young to go to school. Consequently your help on projects like these is also helping maintain employment and income for local families from all backgrounds. By living in the local area you will bring income through tourism and education through cultural exchange. The hostel accommodation on this project is locally owned and all the staff are from the neighbourhood. Where possible produce is purchased for breakfast in nearby shops, helping provide authentic local cuisine. Alternatively you’ll stay in accommodation on Campus, living with other teachers and experiencing real cultural exchange. Lunch and evening meals are included in the package, provided through a monthly allowance. Volunteers are able to spend this allowance each day in any of the many local restaurants and cafes, tasting local cuisine. Environment Transport to and from the project is left up to you to choose (costs covered for public transport). Public transport is always recommended by Travellers and all nearby public transport routes are shown to all new arrivals. If taxis are required, you will be encouraged to share with other volunteers in order to lessen the impact of pollution wherever possible. Having regard for the local community by being consciously aware of your impact is encouraged in all our documentation for all our projects in all our destination countries. This is because we feel very strongly that many countries are subject to, for example, water shortages, high cost of energy and high impact of energy usage, the negative impact of litter and general pollution. Thus we encourage our volunteers to be aware of these possible impacts so that they contribute positively and not negatively to the community in this respect Our company: You taking part in this project enables us to continue to donate financial assistance as well as necessary goods, where it is needed around the world. Examples of donations include building new classrooms, providing school uniforms for poorer students, buying computers, sports equipment, playgrounds, toys, mattresses, classroom equipment and funding school trips and the building of libraries, and more. We also donate significantly to conservation research efforts and the purchasing of necessary conservation equipment. In the past, these donations have been made in all continents and in projects where we work, and some where we do not work. Recent donations made include:
We are committed to upholding strict ethical standards that ensure a positive and lasting impact upon the environments, communities, institutions, volunteers, animals, children and people that we work with. For example:
Our projects enable vital conservation, research, care and education work to take place directly where it is most needed. For example, the schools where we teach English very often have no other English teachers, and so they rely on us for continued lessons. We kept a Species Survival Conservation project in South Africa afloat until completion after it was threatened by lack of funds. Our volunteers contribute, all over the world, to projects that would not exist without them. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
