the amazing things you'll be doing
A passionate country besotted with sport. The enthusiasm of the kids is very infectious in this land of eternal summer, and you're likely to learn as much as you teach. Coaching sport in Brazil is a simply delightful experience.

Brazil offers a rewarding opportunity to pass on your sports skills to children who appreciate it. Absorb this awesome culture by becoming a part of its community. It is no surprise that most volunteers here choose to extend their stay! Brazil also tempts you with a great social life. You can work in either (or both) of two very different regions, Rio De Janeiro, close to the beach, or Foz Do Iguacu with its magnificent Falls.

You don't need any qualifications to coach sports in Brazil, just a basic understanding of the game and a love of sports, as well as an enthusiasm to share this! You can also combine a coaching project with a teaching project - or perhaps you'd like to learn Portuguese or Capoeira at the same time.

In Brazil you can coach:
  • Brazilian childrenAthletics
  • Ballet
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Capoeira
  • Dance (any kind!)
  • Football
  • Karate
  • Jiu-Jitsu
  • Rugby
  • Taekwondo
  • Volleyball
  • Women's Football
the project
The schools and centres that you'll work in are poor but the children are rich in spirit! You'll spend time sharing your skills and building confidence and team morale, whilst working towards improving technique and strategy. What you will offer through coaching is immeasurable in terms of education in social skills, team work, self development, confidence and the obvious positive effects it will have on their English language learning.

With a little time, energy and patience your placement will be thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable for both you and the children you’ll be working with. You'll no doubt learn a thing or two as well, from your students and fellow coaches - this country is passionate about sport with no shortage of talent! You'll also help give the children hope and renewed confidence. The sense of importance that children feel from the fact that you're from another country and have chosen to spend your time helping them can be overwhelming - your very presence is encouraging and motivating.

You'll receive lots of care and assistance from our very friendly and helpful UK staff, from the first stage of applying all the way through to the end of your placement. We are also available 24 hours a day for any urgent matter during your time on our placement.

We will send you our extremely comprehensive information pack with details on everything - ranging from where to go on your weekend travels to what to pack and extensive safety tips. We will also provide you with a selection of coaching manuals that will be very useful on your project.

In Brazil you will have the support of our Brazil Manager who will be on call 24/7 from meeting you at the airport and will be around frequently to ensure you are settled and happy on your placement. You will also find that the teachers at the schools and institutes where you work will be very happy to help you throughout your days.

If you speak some Portuguese (or even Spanish), you will find it very beneficial on this project. But don't be put off if languages aren't your thing! You're sure to pick up some of the basic words whilst you are there, and will find other ways to converse without language becoming a barrier. Don't forget that we can also arrange some Portuguese Lessons for you during your programme in either Rio or Foz, if you would like.
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.

how this holiday makes a difference
Why is sport so important for children?
  • Confidence and Self-Esteem
  • Health, Fitness and Strength: Physical, Emotional and Psychological
  • Building Friendships, Cooperation and Team Spirit
  • Healthy Competition
  • Energy/Anger Outlet
  • Expression and Individuality
  • Provides positive goals or the children to strive toward
  • Fun and Laughter!
  • You help keep these children off the streets and out of danger and trouble.
Sports coaching placements are very valuable for the children in the villages, towns and cities where we work as it teaches children team skills, social skills, communication skills and a sense of belonging. The interaction is a great way to improve the children's spoken English, which is a huge asset for their future life.

We're passionate about providing underprivileged children around the world with good professional coaching. So much sporting talent often goes unnoticed in the countries where we work, as the children don’t have exposure to sports, access to proper coaching, or encouragement to fulfil their potential. We’re dedicated to exposing these children to a variety of sports and much enthusiasm - through our volunteers' coaching and exciting Sports Tournaments!

You will gain incredible insight into the community and make many friends through close up personal contact with the local people and culture.

You taking part in this project enables us to continue to donate financial assistance as well as necessary goods, where it is needed around the world. We employ all local staff force, benefiting the local economy.

You will be briefed on customs and cultures before and on your arrival, affording you an understanding of Brazilian culture which will guide your interactions with local people.

Our company:

You taking part in this project enables us to continue to donate financial assistance as well as necessary goods, where it is needed around the world. Examples of donations include building new classrooms, providing school uniforms for poorer students, buying computers, sports equipment, playgrounds, toys, mattresses, classroom equipment and funding school trips and the building of libraries, and more. We also donate significantly to conservation research efforts and the purchasing of necessary conservation equipment. In the past, these donations have been made in all continents and in projects where we work, and some where we do not work.

Recent donations made in Summer 2008 include:
  • Approximately £1,500 towards the building of a desperately needed classroom in a Zulu school in eMakhosini, South Africa.
  • £1,500 to build a roof at the Grace Kennet Foundation Orphanage in Madurai, India. This was a donation made to match the fundraising efforts of an ex volunteer. A tree had fallen through the roof of the orphanage during a storm, and so a large part of the building was un-usable and dangerous. Work is currently beginning and should be finished by early 2009.
  • Approximately £880 to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre in Malaysia to help publicise the centre and draw funds to care for injured and abandoned Orang Utans.
We employ an all local staff force in most of our destination countries, which benefits the local economy. These range from skilled country managers, who are often pillars of their community, to local labourers and craftspeople. We believe in paying our overseas staff fairly, and many are rewarded with higher than average wages for local standards. When required, we send local staff on training courses to widen their skills. For example, a member of staff in South Africa recently attended an ‘eco-school’. Here, she was trained in eco teaching methods, which she will take to the schools around her region of South Africa to encourage eco-friendly farming methods.

We are committed to upholding strict ethical standards that ensure a positive and lasting impact upon the environments, communities, institutions, volunteers, animals, children and people that we work with. For example:
  • We encourage our volunteers to make the most of local opportunities available to them, such as shopping at local markets, eating in local restaurants and using local services and transport.
  • We encourage volunteers to pay fairly for goods and services. We believe that over payment for goods and services or payment to beggars can have negative consequences and result in the over-reliance of tourism within the local community.
  • We strongly advise against purchasing wildlife souvenirs or anything which may perpetuate the death or cruel treatment of animals for the purpose of profit.
  • We advise on dress codes and codes of behaviour in all of our destination countries to ensure volunteers don’t cause offence to local communities.
Our aim is to create always a win-win-win situation in terms of the benefits for the local communities and institutions that we work in, for us and for the volunteer. We do not embark on any project that is not beneficial to the communities, institutes or volunteers. We conduct regular volunteer satisfaction surveys to monitor our performance.

Our projects enable vital conservation, research, care and education work to take place directly where it is most needed. For example, the schools where we teach English very often have no other English teachers, and so they rely on us for continued lessons. We kept a Species Survival Conservation project in South Africa afloat until completion after it was threatened by lack of funds. Our volunteers contribute, all over the world, to projects that would not exist without them.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
