the amazing things you'll be doing
The ideal option for both independent travellers and groups.

This is a unique, tailor-made holiday that fits your requirements exactly: an exciting and hugely fulfilling way to immerse yourself in Brazilian culture.

You choose when you travel, how long you stay for, and exactly what you will be doing on your holiday: dance lessons, Capoeira, language classes, excursions, sightseeing or community project work.

Put together your itinerary from the following activities:

Cultural holiday in Rio, dancingDance lessons: 1 to 1 lessons at an esteemed Brazilian Academia. Choose from Samba no Pé (Carnival Samba), Samba Gafieira, Forró, Axé and more. Dance lessons can be purchased in blocks of 5, 10 or 15 hours. In addition to 1 to 1 lessons, visitors can participate in up to 2 group lessons per week as part of the local term, a great opportunity to interact and practice with local students.

Percussion: 1 to 1 lessons in Brazilian music, percussion and bateria (Rio Carnival Samba drumming), suitable for everyone from the novice to the experienced musician. Classes available include everything from the basics of Afro-Brazilian rhythm through to advanced training in the art of the instruments of the Samba Bateria - Repique, Caixa, Pandeiro, and tuition in traditional Brazilian instruments.

Community work: We can organise community project work for all visitors, no matter how short their stay. Visitors staying under 4 weeks can participate in our Make Favela Art programme and much needed community renovation work in local favelas. The opportunities for interaction with the residents, the sense of involvement in local life and the much-needed difference that is made every day is massively rewarding.

Cultural holiday in Rio, volunteeringVolunteer projects (4 weeks+) : We have a commitment to developing and facilitating volunteer projects which elicit the maximum benefit to both the project, by utilising to best advantage the skills, experience and interests of the volunteer, and also to the volunteer themselves, by placing them within a role that is challenging and dynamic, allowing them the opportunity for personal development. For visitors staying for four weeks and more, we will match the individual client with the right project based on their skills and interests and the current project needs of our partner organisations, placing individuals in projects looking for specific skills e.g. Dance, Surfing, IT, Marketing and Business Development and many more.

Additional activities:
  • Capoeira Lessons
  • Portuguese Lessons
  • Trips and excursions (Cristo, Sugar Loaf, Maracana Stadium, Cidade de Samba, Samba School Rehearsals, partner social projects)

Accommodation: Single and shared accommodation in a beautiful guesthouse with sun terrace, spacious airy living area and one of the most breathtaking views in the city. Located in Rio’s historic sustainable tourism district Santa Teresa, a cool hillside oasis minutes from the city centre.

Inclusions: All tours include airport pick up and drop off, accommodation in a Santa Teresa guesthouse, full orientation and the services of an on the ground bi-lingual tour coordinator.

Best time to go: December to March, Brazilian summertime, for those who like it very hot and sunny, August to November for those who want a quieter time with less tourists around, and slightly less intense sun.

how this holiday makes a difference
We believe in making a difference, both to lives of our clients through an inspirational experience of Brazil but also to the destination. We do in the following ways.

Volunteering is one of the most important components of our bespoke holiday. Volun-tourism is a fantastic opportunity for the traveller and a much needed resource for the destination country. However, the volunteering experience can vary greatly in how much difference it really makes, and we are very aware of this. We have a commitment to making sure that the time you spend volunteering is as useful and productive, with as much positive impact, as possible.

To this end, we work closely with the social projects we are in partnership to build unique programmes for longer term volunteers and to match the right clients with the right projects to ensure skills are used effectively; we always conduct a post-placement review to look at what the placement has achieved, to update the status and requirements of the project and to liaise with project managers and volunteers to learn from each placement so that our volunteering experience is always improving.

Dancing on Brazil tailormade holidayThe other activities which we offer centre around learning the language, dance, music and culture of the destination country, which all work fantastically to promote cross-cultural understanding and, importantly, respect.

We base our holidays in a designated sustainable tourism area, where tourism is accommodated using the existing infrastructure (no high rise hotels or fast food chains) and is managed to ensure it has minimal environmental and social impact.

We provide 25% of the running costs of a local social project that offers out of school educational and recreational activities for children and teenagers in a local Rio favela. During the holiday, we will take you to visit the social project, an opportunity to see where some of the money from your holiday is going, to interact with the children in the project and see the positive impact the project is having in their lives.

We choose and recommend local service providers to ensure the money we use goes back to the local community. We use a locally run accommodation which recycles and reuses wherever possible, uses energy efficient light bulbs and has a towels-washed-on-request policy. We also use a local transport cooperative to provide our transport and recommend excellent local bars and restaurants and hiking guides.

We give our clients a full briefing on the economic and social realities of the country in which they are staying, plus advising on appropriate behaviour. We work with Climate Care to offset the Carbon emissions caused by our business and all the flights we take. We add the price of the carbon offsetting for our clients’ flights to the invoice as an optional additional charge.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
