day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Fly to Panama City Fly to Panama City via Houston. On arrival, transfer to your accommodation for your first night. Hotel – 2 nights (B)
Day 2: Panama City Your trip starts in Panama City with a tour of the city and train ride to the Panama Canal. This is the first trans-continental railway and your journey will take you from Panama City to Colon.  The canal itself was opened in 1914, 34 years after it was started. Marvel at the engineering masterpiece that links the Pacific with the Caribbean. The distance from coast to coast is 55km and ships usually take eight hours to pass through, 30-40 ships per day. You will also visit the nearby Portobello National Park, a beautiful, coastal reserve of nearly 35,000 hectares. There will also be a chance for some interaction with the local Embera Errebache tribal people; a visit to a small village is included. Before returning to your hotel you’ll have the chance to stop at Miraflores lock, one of the most important parts of the canal. Here, vessels are lifted and lowered in three stages allowing transit to or from the Port of Balboa on the Pacific side. The canal passes underneath the Puente de las Americas (Bridge of the Americas), the point which joins North and South America. (B)
Day 3-4: Pedasi Travelling west, head for the Pacific Coast (500km/5hrs) and Pedasi. There is a fantastic protected reef here and a boat excursion (half day) to Iguana Island Reef for snorkelling is included lunch is included on this excursion. Hotel – 2 nights (B)
Day 5: Boquete Today you move away from the coast and further towards the border with Costa Rica. Here the land becomes more rugged as you ascend into Panama’s western highlands (420km/6.5hrs). Temperatures are cooler here, a refreshing change from the tropical lowlands. Lodge – 1 night (B)
Day 6-7: Manuel Antonio Wake early this morning; the best time to see birds; hike the trails around the lodge in the hope of seeing rare bird species such as the resplendent quetzal. The rest of the day will be taken up heading into Costa Rica. First you will drive to the border at Paso Canoas (120km/2hrs) and stop for the border crossing formalities.  Venturing northwest your destination is Manuel Antonio (211km/5hrs), a forested peninsula and one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful coastal regions. The following day will be set aside for exploration of the area with a walking tour of this tiny national park included. There are sheltered beaches on both sides and lots of resident wildlife to spot such as iguanas and monkeys. The park measures just 683 hectares but there is a surprising amount of wildlife and stunning scenery here to enjoy. There will also be time to enjoy some of Costa Rica’s best beaches. Hotel – 2 nights (B)
Day 8: Manuel Antonio to Arenal Driving north you head for the highlands once again and, in particular the rumbling peak of Arenal Volcano (driving time approx. 4hrs). Hotel – 2 nights (B)
Day 9: Arenal Volcano Today you’ll hike in the national park, feel and hear the force of the volcano under your feet on a guided walk on the trails which criss-cross the lower slopes. You’ll be able to spot a bewildering array of bird species and some fascination geological quirks like the solidified lava flows of previous eruptions. After night falls, the volcano takes on a different personality and hopefully you will witness the pyrotechnic display of the lava flows at night when they are most impressive. (B)
Day 10: Rincon de la Vieja Skirting the shores of Lake Arenal this morning you’ll be hit by some amazing, panoramic views whilst  driving northwest (192km/4hrs). You’ll visit Tilaran en route to Rincon de la Vieja and hike in the national park amid four volcanoes. Hotel – 1 night (B)
Day 11: Into Nicaragua Embarking on the final leg of your Central American Odyssey, today you head for the border once again. Crossing into Nicaragua at Penas Blancas you continue your journey north to Lake Nicaragua. The largest lake in Central America is the defining characteristic of the country, diving the Hispanic, Pacific side from the Caribbean coast both geographically and culturally. Driving via the border at Penas Blancas you’ll arrive at the shores of the lake (43km/45min) for your ferry to Omatepe Island, an island of twin volcanic peaks and your home for the next two days.  Hotel – 2 nights (B)
Day 12: Omatepe Island Once on the island, immerse yourself in Central American life, you’ll visit the Charco Verde (green lagoon) coastal reserve, Ojo de Agua freshwater pools and see the mysterious pre-Columbian rock carvings. This is a special place and the fertile land of the lower slopes of the volcano provide lush surroundings as you explore the island with your guide. (B)
Day 13: Omatepe to Granada This morning, your ferry (1hr) will take you back to San Jorge and from her you will drive to Granada, Nicaragua’s most impressive colonial city (72km/1hr30min). You’ll have time to wander the picturesque streets in the evening and soak up the atmosphere. Hotel – 2 nights (B)
Day 14: Granada; Masaya Volcano A full day tour will enable you to visit Masaya Volcano and enjoy wonderful views from Catarina’s viewpoint before spending time at the local market at Massaya, a perfect opportunity to browse the weird and wonderful items on sale, and pick up some souvenirs of your trip. (B)
Day 15-16: Overnight flight This is where the tour ends for land only passengers. For those on our group flights, transfer to the airport for your flight home.
small group family holiday
This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families and travel in a group of approx. 16 people. The trips are great value and a great way for you and your children to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves. Most adventure kids tend to be aged between 7 and 15, but some are younger (minimum age is usually 5) and some older (perhaps travelling as part of a larger family group). Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip
how this holiday makes a difference
We stay in family run hotels, with the hotel we use in Antigua being a non-profit hotel, with all proceeds going to Safe Passage – a charity helping street children and families living in the dump in Guatemala City. We use a local agent in Guatemala and Belize, as well as local drivers and a local Group Leader. This fulfils part of our commitment to make a positive contribution to the local economy and is the best way of ensuring that our money reaches as many people as possible. Local overseas leaders offer a great way to find out more about the local culture, speak the language, understand the day-to-day life around them and help to ‘open doors’ to a fuller experience. Our agents operate in a responsible manner and are committed to preserving the area in which they work. $0.50 per person per day is donated to a fund which is distributed to a number of grass roots charities throughout the year, working in areas of sustainable development.

Our Responsible Travel Code
Clients who travel with us will automatically receive a copy of our Responsible Travel leaflet. This contains details and advice on how you can make a positive difference when you travel. If you would like a copy in advance of travel please contact us.

Charity Partnerships
The Born Free Foundation is an international wildlife charity that helps animals in need around the world through animal rescues, anti-poaching, support for animal sanctuaries, endangered species conservation, education and public awareness. We ask clients to use their Travellers’ Alert function to which you can report cruelty to animals worldwide and also we visit Ngamba Island, a Born Free supported Chimpanzee Sanctuary, on our Uganda trips. We also support Friends of Conservation – an international charity committed to working with local people to develop a balance between their needs and the wildlife with which they share the natural habitat and ecosystems.

Carbon Balancing
We offset all of our staff travel, both for commuting to work and overseas trips. We also pay £2 per person to partially offset the carbon used in the destination that they are travelling to. We think that offsetting carbon should be a choice made by the individual traveller therefore we ask clients if they would like to augment this £2 with a further contribution. Similarly we ask if you would like to offset your flights – we have set bandings given to us by our Carbon balancing partners - Blue Ventures Carbon Offset and Climate Care.

We ask our clients if they would like to donate to our Foundation. Small donations of £1 per person build up quickly and we are able to give one off donations to various small-scale projects worldwide. Recently these have included installing heating in a school in the High Atlas, Morocco, providing school equipment for a new school building in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon and providing playground equipment for children at a community centre in northern Tanzania.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
