introduction to Volunteer project in Kenya

A tour of utmost mutual benefit to you and the host communities. It takes you right into the heart of Kenya to camp, interact and live (and for the adventurous type may opt for a home-stay) with the locals of Mulot which is off the main tourist circuit of Masai Mara Game Reserve. People here have no direct benefit from tourism activities as in the case in main tourist destinations. They depend on farming but the area has erratic rains which in most cases leave them with meagre resources to live on. Clean drinking water and decent houses are beyond their reach.

Our activities here are geared to improve their living standard - our stay here will help to build/install water tank(s) or build house(s) for some less endowed families. This is a noble way of helping them benefit directly from tourism which otherwise will not have come their way. For those of us with specialized skills at some point, may spare their time to help the locals share their expertise in areas like teaching, medical helps etc. And to wrap it all, we visit some of the main attractions like Masai Mara, lake Nakuru etc for wildlife experience and also an elaborate cultural exposure with other communities like the Masai – it is never a dull moment!
day-by-day itinerary
Arrive and be driven to the village where you set up camps and/or for those interested in home-stay are introduced to their hosts. The first week is for catering materials for construction, which have been bought in advance to begin work. A technical skilled person is on site to assists in the construction as you help and learn the African way of doing things. Also there are breaks to interact with the local communities and join them in their day today life and visit some major wildlife attractions like Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru amongst others.

The first week is dedicated to voluneer work with opportunities to visit and interact with the locals. The second week is for wildlife viewing in which we visit Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Hells gate National parks. In between we visit Masai villages and camp in the remote area of Loita plains to experience some Masai culture. If the work is not completed in the first week, the second week will be a mixture of wildlife viewing and completion of the work. Accommodations are not luxurious but comfortable and safe. We utilize rooming tents with bed and beddings, mobile toilets and hot showers in every camp on safari and mountain huts/ tents while on treks. Food is fresh and prepared with good standards of hygiene.
a taste of volunteering trip - what's it all about?
Taste of volunteeringThis type of trip is ideal for people who are unable to take very long periods off work but who are interested in volunteering to work with communities in need, or in wildlife conservation. These shorter trips combine volunteering with an opportunity to see the main sights in destinations. Find out more about 'taste of volunteering'
how this holiday makes a difference
This is an interactive activity where you go and live and stay with the local communities with offering your worth support. The aim is to assist the less fortunate families, of Mulot village in Narok District off Masai Mara plains, to have a decent shelter and clean water which is the main priority for these people. This is in addition to an athletic club we support in the area that natures young athletes. Since this area is off the main tourist transit to Masai Mara, supporting them will go along way in helping to benefit directly from tourism activities which otherwise will not have come their way. Also because we buy all the materials for use for our constructions from the local market, utilize their labour and buy food for the entire duration from the village will in no thought provide a ready market for these peasant farmers and improve their living standards.

Your presence here will offer the much needed cultural exposure for the locals to share out with you and have a taste of their rich cultures. To avoid endangering the delicate cultures, our activities will not be localized but be spread out in different villages to reach more to benefit from this venture. It is never a dull moment because it is made lively and interactive by our local guides Philip and Manywele will be on hand to tour you around and share their knowledge of cultural and other local issues in an informative way and opportunity to sample the local delicacies.

The trip will run with a minimum 2 people and maximum 12 people at any one time to reduce the impact on environment and village way of life. The accommodation will be in tents with all meals prepared by our cooks for the duration, but for those who are more adventurous can go for 1-2 days or more on a home-stay for a real Africa hospitality.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
