introduction to Cycle the classic cols of the Tour de France

Tour de France cycling holiday, the classic cols

This 'Tour Before Le Tour' is the ideal cycling holiday in France for cycling enthusiasts, both novice and elite, who wish to experience some of the major climbs of the Tour de France without chasing the actual event itself. We visit the cols of the Tour de France in the month of June immediately prior to the main event in July.

While cycling is obviously the main focus of the holiday and indeed some of the most renowned climbs of the Tour de France are included in our tour itinerary, we also ensure our clients return home with more than just memories of cycling in France.

Route map for Tour de France cycling holidayIndulging in the regional cuisine is as enjoyable as cycling to the top of Alpe D'Huez.

The ardent cyclist enjoys the detour to the famous Roman Aqueduct 'Pont du Gard' as much as their non-cycling partners accompanying them on the trip. Beginning in Bordeaux, we spend twenty days traveling through the magnificent Pyrenees, Alps and Provence, enjoying some of the most breathtakingly beautiful scenery in France.

We visit Arcachon, the Pyrenees, Nimes, Alpe D'Huez, Briancon, Italy, Aussois, Briancon, Gap and Vaison La Romaine. To view our route, please click on the map on the right.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1-3:Arcachon. We begin the tour in the seaside resort of Arcachon, a mere forty minute drive from Bordeaux aiport where you will be picked up. The beachside atmosphere of Arcachon is a great way to slide into holiday mode with the easy paced rides being a great introduction to the tour.
Day 4-7:Pyrenees. The first of the renowned Tour de France climbs awaits in the Pyrenean town of Bagneres de Bigorre. Our ride itinerary here includes climbs such as Col D'Aspin, Col de Pyresourde and the mighty Col du Tourmalet.
Day 8:Nimes. We transfer by car to the ancient city of Nimes, a city rich in both sightseeing and atmosphere, proving to be the perfect location for a rest day.
Day 9:Alpe D'Huez. We ride through the picturesque town of Bourg D'Oisan before we begin the legendary climb of the twenty one switchbacks, climbing to our hotel at the top of Alpe D'Huez. The last of our car transfers are now complete. From hereon in, all transfers are by bike.
Day 10:Briancon. The beautiful climb over Col du Lautaret leads us into the medieval town of Briancon, the highest city in France and neighbor to our following destination.
Day 11-13:Italy. Mont Genevre provides a pathway into Italy where we reside in the lakeside town of Avigliana. We enjoy breathtaking views of the lake itself from our hotel and as well as keeping the legs turning with an easy paced local ride, we spend a rest day in the magnificent city of Milan.
Day 14:Aussois. We return to France via the splendorous Mont Cenis, a 25km climb through streams and villages, spending a night in the secluded town of Aussois.
Day 15-16:Briancon. We return to Briancon on what is surely the most challenging day of the tour as we ride the Cols du Telegraph and Galibier back to back. Whilst in Briancon we climb the infamous Col D'Iozard.
Day 17:Gap. As we ride toward tour final destination, we stop for one night in the town of Gap, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the town famous for being part of Napoleon's route during his march of 100 days.
Day 18-20:Vaison La Romaine. As the last leg of our journey arrives we ride past scenic farmsteads and countryside as we journey to the Provencal town of Vaison La Romaine. Mt Ventoux is the jewel in the tour crown. We ride through the town of Bedoin and climb 20km amid beautiful scenery to the bare landscape of the summit. We bid farewell to you in Lyon, with your bike, luggage and tour memories in tact and ready for the journey home.
how this holiday makes a difference
On our Tour de France cycling holiday, as well as taking you to some of the more ‘high profile’ locations such as Bordeaux, Alpe D’Huez or Nimes that are always crowd pleasers, there are more than a few ‘hidden surprises’ in store as we visit some remote and undiscovered destinations. Don’t confuse ‘remote’ with ‘little to offer’. Our quieter locations such as Vaison La Romaine, Avigliana (Italy) and Bigorre de Bagneres also provide us with excellent opportunities to visit wonderful places of historical significance.

Reaching the top on Tour de France cycling holidayIncluded in our list of UNESCO Heritage Listed Sites and Conservation areas to visit are Pont du Gard outside of Nimes, Col du Tourmalet and Col D’Aspin in the Midi-Pyrenees, Mont Ventoux in Provence and the historical site of Lourdes.

Re-visiting the same family owned and operated hotels in smaller towns and villages such as our Hotel Residence in Bigorre de Bagneres or our hotel in the secluded town of Aussois and sharing with you their local markets, out of the way restaurants and their customs has earned us a rapport with our hosts and local business owners that is irreplaceable.

Group size is kept to a reasonable number so that you can enjoy all aspects of your holiday with an ease that comes more naturally with a smaller group, thus any unintended negative impact on the environment can be also kept to an absolute minimum. At the end of the day we dispose of any collected rubbish while out riding to the hotel. Where possible, this rubbish is then recycled by the hotel itself. Please describe your approach to minimising water waste on tour in France.

Cyclist on Tour de France cycling holidayThe best way we know how to ensure our company approach to responsible travel is exercised throughout each tour is to have the owners of the company guide you personally. We encourage you before and throughout the tour to treat your host country as you would your own home, providing you with ‘Responsible Travel Tips’. These may range from something as simple as perhaps bringing enough cycle clothing to ensure you able to do an ‘economy’ wash rather than wash every day, thus reducing our water usage to showing a healthy regard for our hosts by attempting to use a few simple words of their language.

When we are not on tour, we continue to practice our responsible approach to the environment. We recycle and use environmentally friendly products wherever possible such as our cleaning products, energy efficient light bulbs and recycling our rubbish.

As a community initiative, we have raised sponsorship funds to invest in a quantity of bicycles and bicycle related equipment and now offer a cycling programme to our local youth. The equipment and expertise of our coaches are offered free of charge in an attempt to promote cycling to the young so that they may discover a whole new side oto cycling they didn’t know existed.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
