introduction to Amazon rainforest luxury holiday, Brazil
12 days experiencing the wonders of the Amazon rainforest and staying in luxury accommodation in Rio de Janeiro & La Costa Verde
Amazon Lodge (4 nights): Perhaps the last great wilderness, everyone talks about the Amazon, its importance to our survival and the dangers it faces. But hardly anybody has been here to learn what can be done. At any one time the Amazon River basin contains one fifth of the world’s fresh water. There are over a thousand tributaries, many larger than the Mississippi. At the Obidos Narrows in the Andes the river is 2km wide, at its mouth its banks are further apart than London and Paris. Every day fishermen in the Amazon bring in fish never before seen by scientists.
Your jungle lodge is set on the Rio Negro river system, where you have a chalet set in the grounds. You have unlimited access to all the lodge’s facilities and activities (done in small groups) including boat trips to see the pink river dolphins, local indigenous villages, treks into the rainforest and kayaking, piranha fishing trips, ensuring you get to fully participate in the awesome surroundings.
Boutique Hotel in Rio de Janeiro (3 nights): Set against a stunning backdrop of mountains, lagoons and beaches, Rio is a place to both relax and enjoy the pleasures of city life. Being based here ourselves, we are uniquely positioned to get you closer to the residents and their culture, we are on hand to help you, from organising samba lessons and speedboat trips, to explaining local etiquette and where the locals go to enjoy authentic live music.
Vitor, (a Rio local himself) will arrange a day to give you a personalised luxury city tour, showing you those hidden details often missed by the conventional tours and stopping at an excellent local restaurant for lunch before visiting the ‘must see’ attraction of Christ the Redeemer. Everything is done at your own pace, with relaxed and friendly guidance.
You stay in a luxury boutique hotel set in an exclusive, neighbourhood where you have our favourite suite; beautifully decorated with a veranda that enjoys a fantastic view of the lagoon and Christ the redeemer. The staff here are excellent and the pousada immaculate and luxurious with beautiful communal areas and a pool for you to relax by.
Boutique Pousada on the Costa Verde (4 nights): Your pousada set in this truly unique location, nearby to the enchanting colonial town of Parati, a UNESCO world heritage site and is of the highest quality. It combines beautifully the relaxation and activity that the area has to offer. This is a genuine fishing village where locals (although extremely friendly) are concerned with fish and not tourists. All this makes for a fabulous look at the real Brazil where you get a genuine feel for the people, culture and the country.
The owner of your Pousada, Emmanuel is the perfect host, who knows his guests needs as much as he does the area, and is never short of ideas for you. Your days can be spent on the many superb beaches and islands of the area, relaxing in the refreshing natural pools, at the waterfalls, or in Parati, all of which can be easily accessed by foot, boat or jeep, providing of course that you aren’t trekking in the jungle or horse riding in the mountains. Whichever you choose be sure to enjoy the sunset at a beach restaurant on one of the many uninhabited islands.
We’ll make sure you access the best the area has to offer.

The Amazon lodge is in one of the most fascinating environments in the world containing many ecosystems, and what every visitor leaves with is a much better idea as to how this jungle is conserved, it is not just a hotel but a project, not just tourism but ecotourism. Much of what Christina and Jaques, owners of the hotel focus on is education, spreading the knowledge of how to conserve these ecosystems in the long term. The vast knowledge of the inhabitants of the Amazon is passed on to the guests through the local guides, whose employment makes this adventure unique and extremely special. There is however another reason that the locals are employed. The extra work created by the hotel gives the indigenous peoples an alternative means of making money, the alternative to which is the removal and use of the materials from the forest. This employment is therefore a teaching aid to locals as well and does much to preserve these ecosystems.
Your guide in Rio, Vitor, will help you get to know and understand the city from a local’s point of view. Employing local people will allow you to step out of the tourist bracket, and discover much more of this city than usually possible. Equally important to us, because of how much the business and the clients gain from them is giving these locally sourced staff the opportunity to earn money, improve their English and show off their home to you. They are immensely proud of their city, making them extremely good at their job, energetic and fun. Your pousada on the ‘costa verde’ provides a vital revenue stream for the people of this small fishing village, where all staff and their family members live. The pousada is perfectly integrated into its surroundings and due to its size, does not upset the balance of this small community, where life goes on as it has done for generations. All food and materials are sourced from the village where possible; the fish for dinner will have been caught by fishermen earlier that day and vegetables come from local gardens. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
