the amazing things you'll be doing
16 days cycling through Kenya and Tanzania

The destination of this itinerary, in the heart of the wild Africa, is West Kenya and Tanzania. Beginning from Kenya, the route follows the Serengeti plateau and Masai Mara heading to the shores of the immense lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa.

A real adventure for bikers who enjoy long rides through the beautiful landscapes of savannah vegetation where typical flora and fauna can be found, far from popular tourist resorts. There will be time not only for mountain bike riding but also photographic safaris in the Masai Mara and lake Nakuru reserves.

The route is not particularly difficult, however a minimum amount of training is needed. There will be a support vehicle for assistance and baggage transportation made available for the participants and in case of need you will be able to catch a lift. Overnight bookings will be in simple but comfortable hotels, sometimes also in small and simple Guest Houses in the villages where you will have the opportunity to interact with the real African way of life.

how this holiday makes a difference
This is a unique bike safari which will let you experience the true nature and wilderness of Kenya and Tanzania.

By using bikes to explore the country sides we also minimize the use of fossil fuel (we will use one car for transport of luggage and for our traveller’s safety). The local people are used to see the wazungu (white people) coming with roaring jeeps, stopping, just to take some photos like in a zoo and run away. By bicycle you are closer to the local people not only physically, but also to their culture as the bicycle sometimes is the only means of transport available and affordable for them. The people will also be more available to accept you in their lives. Travelling by bike also makes it easier to get close to the wildlife without scaring it. The group on this tour is small, with a maximum of 12 people.

On this trip you will sometimes stay in very basic accommodation compared with back home, this will perhaps give a different view of life. We stay in locally owned accommodation, some nights you will spend in basic guest houses in small villages, and some middleclass hotels. One night will be spent at Lemek Missionary station, a stunning place in the middle of the Kenyan bush, which is run by a local diocese. Their main task at the station is to assist and take care of handicapped Masaai Children. We normally collect some funds among the participants of the trip for them.

We will have most of our meals in local, family run, restaurants You will try some different local dishes like grilled goat, ugali (polenta), chapatti, Tilapia (fish of lake Victoria). We buy most of our food, and other supply, from the local markets.

Our tour leader on this trip is Edi Gabrielli, he is a mountain bike instructor with many years of guiding and arranging bike safaris in Africa. Edi loves to show people a different angle of Kenya and Tanzania and biking is he’s life. Edi is fluent in English and Italian and speaks some Swahili. All other staff on this tour is hired locally. Besides giving you a holiday and experiences out of the ordinary we also try to make sure that the environmental impact is kept to a minimal, all waste is taking care of and removed in a proper way. Our aim is to leave the areas visited in the same way that we found them, so that people can enjoy the nature for many years to come.

You as a traveller are also asked to respect wildlife; for example; do never try to get closer to an animal just for getting a better picture. You should also remember as we travel thorough small villages and sometimes spend the night in them, that it’s important that you respect that you are visiting someone’s home. By taking this tour you also support conservation of the national parks and conservation areas by paying the fees. (Masai Mara Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park and Serengeti National Park).

Before you go on our tour you will receive our Responsible Travellers code of conduct which will give you details on how you can play an important part in reducing your impact on the fragile environments and cultures around the world. But it is not only what we, and our clients, do on tour that counts. In our office we also try to minimize the negative impact on the environment. For example we do not print brochures due to the huge paper wastage and print runs; all information about us and our tours our clients can find on the Internet. The office use recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible and recycle everything possible: paper, plastic, metal, glass etc.

The company is a member of the Swedish Eco Tourism Association and of Ecpat, a non-profit organisation that works against sexual abuse of children and child prostitution.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
