  • day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Chiang Mai - Lisu Lodge (L,D). In the morning transfer on a local truck “songtaew” to the mountain temple of Wat Prathat Doi Suthep, the most famous landmark of Chiang Mai. Its exquisite golden pagoda with 6 kg of pure gold at its peak and the rest plated with gold shines high over the city. The sound of temple bells fills the air, and the view down over the city makes an irresistible photo opportunity. Afterwards drive up the mountain, passing the King’s winter palace of Phuping and turn onto a rough dirt road to the Chang Khien Coffee Research Project where you can enjoy a cup of the local ‘arabica’ surrounded by fabulous gardens of flowers. Continue to the white Hmong village of Chang Khien where the 800 inhabitants still retain their traditional hill tribe clothes and culture that dates back 500 years. The modern city of Chiang Mai can be viewed down below 10 km away. Upon arrival enjoy a quick cup of steaming mountain tea with a village family and then back to Doi Suthep with continuing to visit an Orchid Farm. Then proceed to Lisu Lodge. Arrive at the Lisu Lodge. A traditional welcome drink will be served followed by a briefing. Enjoy a Thai lunch. In the afternoon, experience an ox-cart ride through farmlands and orchards to the Thai village of Baan pang Mai Daeng (about an hour ending up back at Lisu Lodge). Then, Lisu “guide” will take you for a walk through the village. You will start from Ton Lung temple to view the herbal garden and visit some local families with a stop for a cup of tea and a spot of traditional medicine at the shaman’s house. Afterwards visit to the cultural centre or so called the ‘museum’ created by the villagers. Inside you will find a collection of typical household items and tools used by Lisu and Akha mountain tribes. Time at leisure until Thai Dinner with traditional Lisu dance show. Overnight at the Lisu Lodge.
Day 2:Lisu Lodge (B,L,D). Breakfast at the lodge. In the morning, start your adventure with 13 kilometers (8 miles) of cycling to the Elephant Camp. Enjoy an hour of elephant riding through the mountainous jungle scenery down to the river. After a healthy picnic lunch on the bank of the river, you will go on an exciting ride, about 45-minute of white water rafting that takes you to a traditional Thai country village. From there, you return to Lisu Lodge either by bike or by local truck, whichever way you prefer yourself. On the way back, we stop at the traditional Akha village for a chat with the shaman (spirit doctor). Arrive at the Lisu Lodge around 4 p.m. Time at leisure until dinner. Enjoy a Thai dinner with traditional Lisu dance show. Overnight at the Lisu Lodge.
Day 3:Lisu Lodge - Chiang Mai (B,L). Breakfast at the lodge. In the morning depart by local truck from the Lisu Lodge to the Pong Dueid Hot Spring. Upon arrival enjoy walking around the beautiful National Park and take the opportunity on your own small contribution for an energizing bath in hot mineral water. Continue on road to the Mork Fah Waterfall and stop en-route to visit the Karen tribe in Ban Hua Lao. Lunch at local restaurant then transfer to Chiang Mai .
    travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
This tour is offered to individual traveler’s and small groups and is based on a program which follows traditional paths and routes and doesn’t require large-scale facilities. Transportation to and from the lodge is provided by local trucks, run by local communities. We use our local tour leaders who are leading the customers to many outdoor activities and encounters with various hilltribes. We are training these local tour leaders on a regular basis that they are able to conduct this kind of tour and give a briefing to the customers about various aspects. The local community running the Lisu Lodge is getting 1/4 of the profit made, while another part (1/4) is invested in the communities to ensure sustainable development. The money mostly goes to: Village infrastructure (road, water, electricity, sanitary system), village fund, education fund, villages nursery (kindergarten), tradition culture, religion holding, health care and handicraft promotion. Furthermore the villagers are great manufacturers of handicrafts which we also support by providing them with sewing-machines, textiles or other raw materials in order to give them the opportunity to sell their creations to the visitors as a genuine Lisu-souvenir. The earnings from their sales are left to them as it is a result of their efforts.

The electricity as well as the warm water is gained through the solar panels as we decided to provide comfort for western expectations without damaging the environment. The environmental messages are communicated during workshops and training lessons to our staff. In each room of our eco-lodges Lisu Lodge there are notes applying to the guests not only to save tap water for brushing teeth, shaving and taking shower, but also to use towels and bed-sheets etc. twice.

On this tour there are only local restaurants, shops and markets available and the local community is preparing Thai food for the customers with ingredients from their own production (vegetables, fruits) or purchased locally from the markets. We are committed to reducing and recycling waste in our offices. Our offices practice double-sided printing, and recycle printer cartridges, whenever possible. Our offices turn off air-conditioning units and PC’s when offices are not staffed. Much of the waste from our offices is naturally recycled (e.g. bottles and paper waste are sold, where they are re-used/ recycled).

We are supporting the Green World Foundation in Thailand and will have lecturer from this foundation to conduct seminars in our office for our staff in the near future. We already started selling some environment friendly products (bags, T-shirts) on their behalf and hand over all the money and profit to them.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
