how this holiday makes a difference
|
This trip visits a local NGO in Penang who work with the physically handicapped in order to help them adjust to an independent lifestyle outside of the home. Offering a respite centre as well as training our groups are able to visit the centre and volunteer some of their time. In Laos we have a very special project that all groups have the options to visit and support. Phet the Asiatic tiger was orphaned and for sale in a local market before being sponsored by us and its passengers. Phet now lives just our side of Luang Prabang at the Kuang Sii waterfalls, where together with local authorities her environment and food is enabling her to live quite happily. All groups have the opportunity to help support Phet by purchasing buffalo meat and donating it to her keepers.
While in Mongolia you spend a night in a traditional ger (Mongolian felt tent) situated in one of the country's magnificent national parks. Our driver Mia and guide Nemo will no doubt help you to understand more about local traditions and customs of the area, such as stopping at an orvoo to ask the spirits for good luck on our journey. Here our travelers support the work of Lotus Children's Home. There is a list of needed items in our pre trip departure information if you would like to make a donation. We cross into Russia by train and disembark near Lake Baikal, one of the world's most precious ecological sites where we experience village life staying with our local friend Nikolai and his family. You'll get to try all kinds of traditional cooking and fresh produce, including fish straight from the lake. You'll definitely get to rub shoulders (literally!) with Muscovites and St Petersburgians as we explore these two great Russian cities since our prime method of getting around will be local public transport like the metro, trolley buses and trams. At the completion of your journey you can donate any unwanted toiletries or unneeded clothing to our project in St Petersburg, Nochlezhka, an organization that helps the many homeless people living in the city. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
