introduction to Water multi sport holiday in Croatia

Skradin is a unique town hidden in the Krka River estuary, 80 kilometers from Split, on the very edge of the national park. The small picturesque town, rich in history, has a couple of family-run hotels, restaurants, pubs and wineries, a beach and marina – all in friendly atmosphere. It is absolutely not a typical tourist-hotel resort.

This activity program is a well balanced mixture of activity, nature and culture. Your days will be filled with hiking up the waterfalls and across narrow streams, touring lakes in a canoe, kayaking around fishermen islands and through rapids of exotic river canyons, rafting through jungle-like forests and exploring caves… Afternoons and evenings will be spent in relaxing ambience of Zadar and Sibenik old towns, Roman emperor Diocletian’s Palace in Split and Trogir art treasures - both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Please note: This itinerary is subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, weather, water levels, special events of interest, etc.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Saturday arrival in Skradin and check in the Skradinski Buk hotel. Get-together dinner and presentation of the program will be followed by an evening walk around the town and its pubs.
Day 2:Boat and walk tour of the Krka River National Park. We will visit the Park’s magnificent Skradinski Buk and Roski waterfalls, numerous mills, streams and cascades, as well as a famous Franciscan monastery. You will be able to admire the abundant wildlife, particularly birds – more than 200 different species.
Day 3:Kayak trip on the Krka River and Prokljan Lake towards Zaton. You will have time to enjoy the beach and practice kayak skills in mixed fresh and saltwater, which has abundant life under the surface.
Day 4:Zrmanja and Krupa rivers - canoeing down the two of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. After the river trip and a picnic you will walk through the old town of Zadar, enjoying a drink on a promenade.
Day 5:Sea kayaking, snorkelling and swimming trip to the romantic Vrgada Island, near the Kornati Islands National Park. You won’t encounter cars nor hotels, only pure nature with lovely coves and the most beautiful beach in the area. In the evening we shall visit Sibenik, an ancient town with lively Mediterranean night life.
Day 6:Heading south to the Cetina River for a rafting trip. After lunch we continue to Split to walk its popular palm tree promenade and visit the Roman emperor Diocletian palace, a World Heritage Site built in the 4th century. Time permitting; we will also visit the old town of Trogir, another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 7:A day spent at leisure in Skradin, or as an alternative, taking an optional trip of hiking, biking, walking, sightseeing or swimming in the surrounding area.

how this holiday makes a difference
Community:
By booking this trip you bring much needed income to the people who are still recovering from the war-torn years, as this was the area severely affected by war. This trip ensures that the local people benefit as much as possible in the form of jobs (we employ local guides and drivers) and provision of accommodation (we use family owned hotels or home stays with local family) and most of all that negative environmental impacts are drawn to a minimum. We also use local transfer services, buy food from the small farms and work on developing responsible waste management by stimulating waste recycle.

By buying local products you are supporting this countries’ economy and helping Croatia to stand on her feet again! We consider it our responsibility to lead efforts to maintain and preserve the integrity of this fledgling sector by petitioning the introduction of tighter controls over the use of the country’s natural resources.

As a company, we support the local community by building camps in partnership with local families, building bridges and accesses to the rivers. In order to preserve traventine barriers on Zrmanja River we have built a wooden detour bridges.

The biggest focus of the towns tourist offering are over two dozen famous restaurants which offer a variety of local specialities and vines. Our program combines that and a week full of activity with a base in Skradin's only and locally owned hotel. This hotel used to be a traditional family house, with minimal changes on traditional architecture now converted into an accommodation which gives you a real sense of ambience. This is a first time that one agency organises a multi day program in this area just 10 miles from Adriatic coast but on the edge of all main tourist stops.

Environment:
On our trips we bike on pawed roads only, walk and hike on bitten paths and admonish our guests not to feed, fish, hunt and disturb animals.

In our office we minimize printing actions and recycle paper. Part of our staff is vegetarian and because of that we try to provide quality vegetarian meals on our trips. We also support an orphan bear shelter in Kutarevo.

Skradin is a small town with some 6000 inhabitants situated on the edge of the second biggest Croatian National Park Krka River. Its position is it's big advantage but also its big disadvantage. With more then half of million visitors to a National Park in 2007 only few of them choose Skradin as their destination. Tourists and big travel agencies see it mostly as a passing stop before main attraction. Fees that we pay to go to the National Park contribute to the conservation of that area.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
