the amazing things you'll be doing
With plentiful wildlife, impressive scenery, dramatic volcanoes and lovely beaches, Costa Rica's attractions are well recognised. Incredibly rich in biodiversity, Costa Rica has over 5% of all the species on Earth in an area a fifth of the size of the UK. It boasts 1,200 species of orchids, 850 species of birds, and more species of butterfly than the whole of Africa. Costa Rica's most precious natural resources are protected in wildlife reserves and national parks which cover 25% of the country.
Getting to see Costa Rica's wildlife has been made easy with numerous park trails, elevated walkways in the forest canopy, river boat trips, plus scores of butterfly farms, frog farms and serpentariums. There are special opportunities for birdwatching. Adrenalin is also readily available, with zip-lines stretched high above the forests, exciting surfing on Pacific rollers, white-water rafting, trekking, and horse riding all easily available.
Costa Rica is peaceful and well organised (it is often called the Switzerland of Latin America). It has no army, educational and health standards are relatively high, and English is widely spoken. Distances are short, there are many well-kept small hotels and guesthouses, and there is a warm welcome everywhere.
This trip includes great beaches on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, where the choice of hotel ranges from the ultra-simple to the ultra-stylish, and the African influenced Caribbean coast in the south east. You can either choose to do all of this trip using transfers or you can transfer on the Caribbean coast and then elect to self-drive the rest of the route, giving you more freedom to explore.

day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | San José. You are met on arrival at the airport and driven to our current favourite hotel in the San José area. |
| Day 2-3: | Caribbean (Gandoca-Manzanillo). In the morning you are transferred eastwards to the south Caribbean coast (4 hrs), passing through the lowland rainforest of the Braulio Carrillo National Park. Stay for 2 nights at a lodge near the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. You are free to relax on a pristine local beach or take up one the many optional activities available locally. There are walking trails through the rainforest, you can hire bicycles, go snorkelling on the coral reefs or try an aerial zip-line through the jungle. |
| Day 4-5: | Tortuguero. Early morning you are transferred to the dock where you board a motorboat for the journey to your lodge in the flooded forest at Tortuguero. After lunch you are taken to visit Tortuguero village and the local beach, where your guide will explain the history and habitat of the area. For day 5 you have a full day based at Tortuguero including an excursion by boat through the narrow channels of the flooded forest for wildlife viewing. A shared English-speaking guide will help point out the creatures. |
| Day 6-7: | Sarapiquí. After breakfast at the lodge you are transferred by boat back to the dock, then onwards by road to a local restaurant where you have lunch. If you have chosen to have a hire car you will collect it here. Travel to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí (1 hr) where you stay for 2 nights. You are free to take advantage of one of the local activities. You could take a nature walk at La Selva Biological Station, white-water raft down the Sarapiquí River or take a more leisurely river float to enjoy the forest scenery at the water’s edge. |
| Day 8-9: | Arenal. Get a reasonable start this morning to travel to the Arenal area, where you stay for 2 nights. You have a free pick of the many local attractions. You could do the Hanging Bridges Canopy tour for excellent views across the treetops to the outstretched valley, or visit your choice of hot springs where you can relax in the thermal waters. |
| Day 10-11: | Monteverde. Travel along the north shore of Lake Arenal then up the winding country roads to Monteverde cloud forest, your base for the next 2 nights. In the afternoon you could visit the hummingbird gallery or the local cheese farm. You are free for your own choice of activities in the Monteverde area. There are guided nature walks through the Santa Elena and Monteverde cloud forests, canopy walks, a zip-wire and horse-riding. |
| Day 12-14: | Pacific coast. Travel westwards this morning to the Pacific coast, where you spend 3 nights relaxing at the beach at Tamarindo (or your choice of beach destination). |
| Day 15: | San José. A final free morning at the beach before you travel back to San José for a final positioning night. |
| Day 16: | San José / departure. If you are using a hire car drop it off at the international airport before checking in for your chosen flight home. Alternatively you have a private transfer from your hotel to the airport to co-ordinate with your departure time. |
how this holiday makes a difference

As an in depth specialist tour operator to Costa Rica responsible tourism is at the very heart of what we do. To us, this means much more than a simple donation to a charity for each client. We try to build long and constructive involvements with local guides, guest houses, wildlife lodges, and hotels, in the course of which we, and our clients, can make lasting wide-ranging contributions to the wonderful places and people we engage with. In this itinerary we use several lodges that fit with this philosophy perfectly, employing local guides and bringing long-term benefits to the local community. We are the first tour operator in the UK to form a partnership with the Rainforest Alliance to work towards the implementation of best management practices in sustainable tourism. In real terms this means that we are working with hotels who are making a positive impact on their local community – socially, environmentally and economically.
Outlined below are hotels we use that employ sustainable tourism methods. Almonds and Corals is a good example of how a luxurious comfortable lodge can be built inside a wildlife refuge while complying with all the environmental measures to protect and display all the natural beauty that the Costa Rican Caribbean has to offer. The design of the entire lodge has been carefully thought to minimize power needs, noise, and contamination all together. Waste is carefully processed, recycled, and disposed. Only biodegradable soaps, detergents, shampoos, and conditioners are allowed in lodge. A custom made water system was built for this rainforest lodge to assure that there would be no contamination to the area. Additional to this, the owners of this lodge constantly work with the community to spread a consciousness of sustainable tourism in many different areas; such as recollection of trash on the shores, giving speeches and preparing activities in the surrounding schools to cultivate an early environmental consciousness, organizing police patrols on bicycles, and assembling a garbage recollection system for the entire area of Manzanillo, among many other activities that they have been involved in since this lodge was built. Cariblue supports several non-profit institutions, including the Waldorf School at Playa Chiquita - making donations to the scholarship system for low-income children in the zone. Recicaribe - the business that sorts and recycles wastes. Pueblo limpio ("Clean village") is the programme that conducts clean-ups on the beaches and around the tourist attractions of Puerto Viejo. Playa Cocles has received the Ecological Blue Flag designation; this award is given to communities that meet standards for sea water quality, beach quality, access to portable water, wastewater treatment, environmental education, safety, and administration. La Quinta de Sarapiqui Country Inn provides jobs for people in the local community (95% of their positions go to local workers). They have developed collaboration programs with local schools, consisting of cultural exchanges with their guests and including donations for improvements to installations and the acquisition of educational materials. They sponsor local cultural and sports activities. They grant four scholarships to students from the local high school. They are involved in community development and local environmental associations and in all the activities meant to improve quality of life in the community of Sarapiquí. They have adopted environmental protection measures through programmes for recycling, saving resources, and the use of non-contaminating products, and they educate tourists about these programs. On this trip you will visit National Parks at Tortuguero, Sarapiqui, Monteverde and Tamarindo. The entrance fee goes toward the conservation of these protected areas. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
