the amazing things you'll be doing
With a coastline of 1778km and 1185 offshore islands in the Adriatic, Croatia has some of the most beautiful beaches and scenery in the Mediterranean. The stunning island of Krk is one of the highlights and is a great place to explore on foot. By comparison, the mountainous areas of mainland Croatia are less well-known, but a fantastic network of challenging trails and mountain huts awaits. We spend time in the national parks of Velebit and Paklenica, famous for its spectacular gorges and rock climbing routes. It is hard to imagine a region where you can experience such diverse scenery during a week of walking. The trip finishes in the lovely coastal town of Trogir, where we stay in the fascinating old walled town.

Community
As a part of our continued commitment to responsible tourism, we work closely with our local operator to run this trip in a way that aims to reduce impacts and to give as much back as possible to the local communities. We have had a trusted and successful relationship with our local operator for over 6 years now. He is former mountaineer who is very involved with the National Parks and is still an active member of the Mountain Rescue in Croatia. As a result, conservation is integral to his business. All the accommodation we use is small and locally owned. This we believe contributes directly to the local community as local staff are employed and locally produced and sourced goods are bought for the accommodation. Environment Our local operator has spent significant time training our guides on responsible tourism issues. All guides share the same ethos of the operator, with regards to conservation and they will brief the group on ‘respect for the environment’ tips and trail etiquette issues. The trip has been developed to include many destinations that will benefit from our tourism, including the Zavizan mountain refuge, which we visit on day 4. This is owned by the North Velebit Natiional Park, and staying here directly funds its’ upkeep. This area also includes the Velebit Botanical garden (set up in 1969), which has over 600 indigenous and 30 transplanted species of plants. We have at our offices worked to reduce our carbon footprint through a reduction of energy use and energy conservation measures. We also actively reduce the waste produced by having active reduction and recycling policies in place. We run regular staff workshops on Responsible Tourism. Global warming is a reality and to help you make a difference by reducing the carbon dioxide that is produced when you travel we offer a chance to carbon balance your flights. We encourage all our clients to do this and do so for all our staff travel. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
