the amazing things you'll be doing
From your base in a small, but still central town in the Tolmin valley you’ll set out on different activities in the stunning mountain scenery of Slovenia’s Julian Alps and along the turquoise river Soca. An ideal mixture of land and water based activities will ensure that you’ll experience this remarkable part of Europe at its best.
Accommodation: The 3 star hotel Krn is situated just in the centre of Tolmin, almost entirely surrounded with mountains and alpine river. The hotel offers 48 comfortable and spacious en-suite rooms with twins, doubles, triples and quads available. It offers a variety of meals from a la carte menu, using local products, which can be served in a spacious terrace, enjoying the view when relaxing after activities.
You will also have the very unique experience of staying in two different mountain huts, both high in the Alps, enjoying traditional Slovenian shepherds meals. This is an area with its very own fauna and flora. You shouldn’t be surprised if chamois or deer crosses your way. Don’t forget to bring swimming trunks, alpine boots and a big smile with you!

how this holiday makes a difference
|
Soca valley is not on the traveller's top list of places to visit yet and we would like to keep it that way because in such a fragile and clean environment regulated tourism has already been proven as the best solution.
As a local agency we work with local guides and qualified sports enthusiasts who are all well trained and friendly and helpful. Our philosophy has always been that, next to the destination, a genuine human touch is the thing that makes a fantastic holiday. It has been proven to be so. Tolmin itself lies just next to Triglav National Park and by taking people there on a mountain trip we educate them about the unique fauna and flora and how tourism can impact the local ecology. If not managed carefully tourism has the capacity to disrespect the landscape through building roads, the parking of vehicles on the pastures and fields, using motorbikes and quad bikes on mountain tracks and collecting endangered mountain flora. In this area the landscape and people have been seriously affected by both World Wars. In WW1 one of the bloodiest and biggest battles in the high Alps took place along the Soca river. To make people aware of this fact, we present to clients all the important 'must see' places in the valley, especially the award winning museum in Kobarid and Tolmin. There are really vivid presentations given in Kobarid museum since there is still an elder guide Peter, who himself experienced many of the situations presented. It doesn't get more realistic than that and the educational value is very high. Entrance fees also contribute to restoring and maintaining both war sites such as bunkers, front lines, charnel house and national cultural and historic places of all kinds We encourage customers to try local food like ‘Frika’ and local dances and it's very easy to soak in the local atmosphere, since almost everyone speaks English, many Italian and if you are brave enough, you can try Slovenian. Bless you for that as it's certainly not easy! On this holiday, only local accommodation providers are used who employ local staff in all areas. The fact that hotel Krn is the only one in town helps sustain tourism in just the right quantity which reflects quality as well. The whole town is quite connected, so it's not a surprise that they serve local goods such as spirits. Recycling is essential wherever possible, too. All private accommodation from pensions on, serve local delicacies such as the well known Tolmin cheese and bears blood spirit. In this way they help the local economy with products, otherwise cut away from commercial outlet. All transfer services are local. They know every little corner of this winding, but picturesque road. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
