the amazing things you'll be doing
This is a summer break for qualified teachers which incorporates 2 weeks of teaching followed by 2 weeks of travelling.  The four week package starts in Surin, Northeast Thailand, teaching English to children in poor schools. Thai children are polite and keen to learn. You will have a lot of fun as well as sharing your professional skills and enhancing their learning. Classes are generally bigger in size than back at home and there are less facilities and teaching aids such as computer suites, books or electronic boards. However all the children are a delight to teach and eager to learn English.

You’ll be teaching various year groups of primary school children in one school and will be responsible for constructing lessons throughout your stay, although we do have plenty of novel ideas left from previous volunteers. Teachers may also help organise and lead English camps for primary and secondary school aged children, during their summer holidays. These camps run over the holidays and are staffed by teachers and volunteers.

In Surin we rent private houses for our volunteers. These houses have hot water and electricity plus a self catering kitchen if you want to cook for yourself. You will share with fellow volunteers so you’ll have some company if there is anyone else volunteering at the same time as you and you’ll be close to shops, restaurants and bars. We also provide bicycles for our volunteers as there is quite a lot to explore outside of the town centre too in the country – picturesque traditional silk villages, rice paddy fields, water buffalo, friendly children and locals.

For the two weeks travel you will spend time at Khao Yai national park trekking and exploring, visit ancient ruins in Northeast Thailand similar to those at Angkor in Cambodia, have that all important beach time and have a few days in magnificent Bangkok for shopping and sightseeing. During your volunteer placement there are several local trips you can organise. Surin is surrounded by a number of handicraft villages, from silk weaving through to jewellery making. There is also Surin’s elephant village where you can learn the traditional skills of the Mahout.

how this holiday makes a difference
Staff here are overstretched and some do not know how to speak English. Working as a volunteer teacher will assist local staff and help to develop children’s English speaking skills. Northeast Thailand is one of the poorest regions in the country and education levels are low so this project is directly contributing to improve the local education levels and therefore the economy and social prospects of the community.

We actively support the schools in this region of Thailand. We are involved in providing financial support and equipment to raise the standards of classroom facilities in the region. We have built an outside teaching facility, a kitchen and painted several classrooms for two schools. Surin has over 1000 schools all in desperate need of development. We have also started a number of community projects in Surin. Our volunteers built fish ponds for poor families and a nursery for a school. Both projects will generate much needed additional income. In addition our volunteers worked with a number of schools making organic fertilizer and on a soil erosion prevention project. Volunteers are supported by local Thai staff who know the region well. They are given information about local facilities such as restaurants, shops, villages etc to visit in their spare time.

We actively encourage volunteers to visit the villages outside of the town and to support their local handicraft production. The area is not a tourism hotspot so volunteers will be contributing directly to the local economy and assisting small businesses to survive. Volunteers stay in rented accommodation and are advised upon water and electricity usage. We provide bicycles for volunteers to get around on. We do not provide food for our volunteers, but encourage them to buy from small restaurants and local market stalls.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
