the amazing things you'll be doing
This trip is the ultimate Africa experience, combining Botswana’s pristine African wilderness and abundance of wildlife with the magnificent Victoria Falls - and finishing up on the pristine beaches of Mozambique.

Botswana is home to an array of big game including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah and the rare and elusive wild dog. You will stay at 2 camps with luxury permanent tents and chalets intended to provide a bush experience without compromising on comfort. Your days will be planned according to your choice, and may include mokoro canoe trips (subject to water levels), day and night time game drives, walking safaris with a professional guide, sundowner cruises and fishing excursions. The lodge we have chosen close to the Victoria Falls is beautifully appointed, with each chalet having a private balcony overlooking the river. A walk along the magnificent Victoria Falls is a must, and guests may also choose from a range of activities, including white water rafting, scenic flights, sundowner cruises and canoeing.

For the trip’s finale, we have chosen a luxury eco-boutique retreat on an unspoilt island within a National Park. This is the ultimate place to relax, with miles of deserted white sand beaches, turquoise seas crisscrossed with local dhows plying their trade, luxury accommodation and excellent cuisine. The nearby reefs are excellent for snorkelling and diving, but guests may also choose to go sailing on a dhow, climb the dunes, take a picnic on a secluded beach or listen to the ancient African stories that chart the cosmos on a stargazing evening.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Fly from Johannesburg to Maun and then by light aircraft across the Okavango Delta's maze of waterways to your first lodge in the Okavango Delta. This afternoon, perhaps take a game drive or relax before dinner.
Day 2-3:In the Moremi Game Reserve. This area is home to a wide variety of big game including elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah and the rare and elusive wild dog. The camp offers some of the best game viewing in the Okavango Delta, and activities available include mokoro canoe trips (subject to water levels), exclusive bush dinners, and game drives in open-sided 4 x 4 vehicles - including the rare opportunity of night drives. Guests also have the option of walking safaris with a professional guide. Accommodation is in luxury permanent en suite tents with private balcony and hammock! The main building offers expansive views over the surrounding floodplains.
Day 4-5:You take a chartered flight over the Moremi Game Reserve to Kasane, on the edge of Chobe National Park. The lodge where you will stay here sits above the Chobe River and offers unparalleled panoramic views across the islands and flood plains as far as Namibia. Here you will enjoy creature comforts - elegantly appointed accommodations, gourmet meals and fine wines. The luxurious thatched cottages contain sunken handcrafted baths, indoor and outdoor showers, terrace and private garden with hammock overlooking the Chobe River. The area is renowned for its elephant population, as well as hippos, buffalos, puku, antelope, lions and other creatures that gather on the banks of the Chobe River. Game drives, sundowner cruises and fishing excursions are available. The lodge also offers a pool and spa treatments.
Day 6-7:Today you will transfer by land and boat to a luxury Lodge just outside Livingstone. Here, you stay in beautifully designed chalets made of teak and custom-made canvas tenting with private balconies which extend over the river. Your stay here includes a trip to the Victoria Falls, where activity options include bungi jumping, white water rafting, river boarding, canoeing, and scenic flights. The lodge is home to an array of birdlife, and on a walk of its nature trail, you may spot the Trumpeter Hornbill, African Finfoot, Pels Fishing Owl, Pygmy Kingfisher, Rock Pratincole and White Backed-Night Heron. Activities also included are a sundowner cruise, mokoro trips, a nature trail and a tour of the local village and school.
Day 8-12:This morning, transfer to Livingstone Airport for a flight to Johannesburg and a connecting flight to Vilanculos in Mozambique. (NB Flight times may dictate an overnight stop in Johannesburg). You will transfer to a luxury Indian Ocean eco-island retreat. The vision here is to provide the ultimate in private luxury hideaways in a stunning ’undiscovered’ destination. Accommodation is in a luxury beach villa with private pool, beach frontage, indoor and outdoor showers, mini bar and butler service. The main fine dining restaurant offers magnificent uninterrupted views out to sea, and specialises in combining fresh local ingredients with locally caught seafood. The reefs in this area are excellent for diving and snorkelling: green and leatherback turtles, reef sharks, stingrays, devil rays, moray eels, whale sharks (seasonal), manta rays (seasonal), grouper, as well as a variety of reef fish may be seen. Dolphins are frequently sighted en route to and from dive sites and guests will be able to snorkel with them if time and sea conditions permit. Humpback whales migrate past these waters in season and are also frequently sighted or specific whale watching experiences can be arranged. On land, island drives, visits to the lakes and dunes, beach barbeques and remote beach picnics are available.
Day 13:After breakfast, you will transfer back to Johannesburg via Vilanculos.
how this holiday makes a difference
Botswana’s policy of preserving its wildlife and implementing sustainable tourism policies has paid off with its pristine natural environment. Whilst the country is one of Africa’s more expensive safari destinations, the money paid on entering national parks contributes towards conservation strategies and the development of local communities.

This trip uses local guides who have an intense passion for nature and their country. Their ability to speak local dialects gives guests a privileged insight into the intriguing local tribal cultures, whilst their well-trained game-spotting skills and expert knowledge of botany and wildlife provide for a unique and informative experience.

The lodges in Botswana have been developed with exceptional sensitivity to the surrounding environment and great care is taken to ensure that the presence of the camps is not intrusive; Boreholes have safety switches to prevent over utilization of the resource. The camps are situated in environmentally sensitive areas, all solid waste is sorted and removed from the site. Scavenger proof cages are used for temporary waste storage. All cleaning products and chemicals are bio-degradable. Camps run off power generators if not situated on an electrical grid. Emissions and fuel usage are greatly decreased.

In Zambia, the lodge we recommend is extremely committed to supporting the local communities, including setting up a small pre-school for local children and assisting in the construction of a clinic that will serve the villages around the area. At present the closest medical facility is about 30kms away. Guests to the lodge are invited to bring much needed school supplies with them to donate personally. The lodge also supports a local initiative to assist with the production of clean and safe drinking water to the local villages. This is achieved by raising funds to buy bio-sand filters for each village.

The Retreat in Mozambique is one of only a handful of resorts where the community are major stakeholders and contribute to every aspect of the project. The resort is Mozambique’s first carbon neutral hotel, achieved by planting indigenous trees to assist the re-forestation of the island in compensation for the carbon emissions generated by the lodge and its building.

The local communities have been educated and encouraged not to hunt rare species or over-fish certain areas and a ‘no fishing zone’ has been established in front of the resort’s shores to encourage a resurgence of dolphins. Besides employing local islanders wherever possible the lodge owners have also helped in rebuilding the village after the area was devastated by cyclone Favio in March 2007, developing a new school and housing for the teachers and giving English lessons to the new teaching staff and the local National Park wardens.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
