day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | On arrival we will check into a heritage hotel in Fort Cochin. After a chance to relax and freshen up we have lunch, and spend the rest of the afternoon to discover a little of this amazing city. Its historic links can be seen in the Colonial Bungalows, an old Jewish Synagogue, Chinese fishing nets, the oldest European Church in India and museums. |
| Day 2: | Drive to Thodupuzha to a spice growing farmhouse with a breathtaking view of the Western Ghats. We can take a walk around the farm with rubber trees, mango and jack fruit trees. We can also take a look at a typical spice garden with nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper vines and the ayurvedic herb garden. You can also enjoy the local cuisine from the fresh vegetables grown in the organic vegetable farm. |
| Day 3: | We have the full day to hike to the nearby forests, waterfalls, engage in bird watching, visit the fish ponds and enjoy the life on a large farm with plenty of livestock. |
| Day 4-5: | We make our way into the hills to Munnar. The tea town of Munnar with its scenic grasslands and high altitude rain forests makes an ideal destination for short treks into the mountains. We will also go on wildlife watching trip to Rajamala for the endemic Nilgiri Tahr, visit the Madupetty Lake for a picnic and an elephant ride and visit the tea gardens and museum while staying at the magnificent Tea Estate Bungalow. |
| Day 6: | Our next destination is Hornbill Camp at Thattekkad. We pass through scenic countryside with temples, spice gardens, paddy fields and rubber plantations. Our camp is located just outside Thattekkad, Kerala's first bird sanctuary with nearly 270 species in a small area. |
| Day 7: | Today we will cycle to Edamalayar, a region of thickly forested areas and quiet country rides. After exploring the rain forests here, we will head back to the Hornbill Camp. You can kayak along the Periyar River discovering the lowland forests along the river. |
travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.how this holiday makes a difference
|
This holiday will help the local community as their participation is involved at each place. The homestays help the local community by providing them employment and also engaging them in the various activities in the farm lands.
By employing local birding guides at Thattekkad and by staying at environmentally low impact accommodation like the Hornbill Camp, we hope to bring in awareness about Responsible Tourism among the general public. Hornbill Camp is made of locally available materials and constructed exclusively by using locally available expertise in reed leaf thatching. There is very little concrete, but tents are used instead. The water is heated using solar heaters and the kitchen refuse is recycled for use in the spice plantations nearby. We always employ local drivers during all our tours. Our supplies like vegetables and poultry are always sourced from villagers residing near the camp & we promote local businesses by using local jeeps and locally owned wooden canoes for moving on the river, whenever possible. The activities during this holiday, namely, cycling, kayaking and walking are all carbon neutral activities and as such they go a long way in promoting responsible travel. As a company, we have introduced modes of conservation like introduction of CFL lamps to conserve energy, reuse of paper and old envelops and minimizing printing. The accommodation we use on all our tours have also introduced organic farming, vermicompost for waste disposal, employing local labour in tourism related activities. All supplies are sourced locally. The parks have introduced a system by which the Vana Samrakshana Samitis (Forest Protection Teams) and Eco Development Committees form part and parcel of all tourism ealted activities. It is mandatory to employ a local guide while entering the park. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
