Departing from Budapest, this Halloween tour in Transylvania with Vlad the Impaler offers a 10 day trip back in time, following Jonathan Harker’s footsteps but revealing the genuine historical facts and places related with Vlad the Impaler, the Romanian ruler known as Dracula. The tour was placed by the prestigious American Fodor’s travel guide in the Top Ten Must-Do Adventures and is intended for Halloween enthusiasts, Transylvania lovers, culture and history fans and adventure seekers.

You’ll be introduced to the unique medieval citadel of Sighisoara – Vlad the Impaler’s birth place, the Saxon city of Brasov, Bistrita Citadel, the royal Peles Castle, the mysterious Bran Castle as well as Dracula’s Castle in Borgo Pass built in accordance to Bram Stocker’s imagination. In addition, the special activities prepared for you, all along your itinerary, bring out the essence of the genuine Transylvanian Folklore – The Ritual of Killing of the Living Dead, the meeting with the Romanian ethnographer Mihai Dancus. The tour also covers the folkloric aspects of the legend created by Bram Stoker, wine tasting in Tokaj, Hungary and accommodation in Dracula’s Castle in Borgo Pass.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Budapest - Tokaj - Satu Mare. Our English speaking guide picks you up from Budapest Airport and prepares you for your travel to Transylvania. Stop for a glass of excellent wine in Tokaj, Hungary. With higher spirits you’ll reach Romania and stop in Satu Mare for accommodation in a 3* hotel. Along with a welcome dinner, you’ll receive your talisman: a cross carved by a famous popular craftsman to keep your body safe and your spirit alive, as well as a survival certificate to recognize your courage!
Day 2:Satu Mare - Sapinta - Sighetul Marmatiei - Ieud. Drive to Sapanta, close to the Ukrainian border, home of the merriest cemetery in the world! Next stop is Sighetul Marmatiei where Mihai Dancus, a famous ethnographer, will take you into the magical world of Romanian folklore on your visit to the Village Museum. You’ll spend the evening in a country-inn in Ieud, a welcoming ‘peasant house’ where you can enjoy a Maramuresean home cooked meal.
Day 3:Ieud - Rozavlea - Sacel - Bistrita. In Sacel you’ll make a truly necessary friend: Grigore Tulean, a famous woodcraftsman. He’ll teach you how to make the perfect wooden stake! Travel to Bistrita next and step into Jonathan Harker’s shoes. Meet Misiuga, the Baron of Dracula and be welcomed into his windswept tower; you’ll see an interesting puppet exhibition, receive a garlic wreath. Stay in Dracula’s Castle, a 3* hotel, which was built in accordance to Bram Stokers imagination. A candle lit dinner at the castle is followed by a fire camp near by with all the right stories for a night to remember.
Day 4:Bistrita - Cluj Napoca - Turda. Morning ride to Cluj, admire here the impressive Saint Michael’s Cathedral. From Cluj we drive to Turda, the place where you’ll put your existence to the test! Here you’ll descend into the heart of one of the biggest salt mines in the country – Turda Salt Mines. The mine ends in a narrow tunnel at the end of which a mirror is placed. Should you see your reflection in the mirror, you will know you still have a soul to worry about! After a Transylvanian meal an evening to fear, you’ll attend the killing of a vampire; you’ll be part of the crowd seeking to take the bloody creature to a special place where the ritual can begin!
Day 5:Turda - Medias - Biertan - Sighisoara. In Medias, become acquainted with a unique artist, the only one in the world who uses spider webs for his paintings. The next stop of your Romania travel is Biertan. Then it’s time for your Halloween party, put on your costume and get into the mood, this is the reason for your travel to Transylvania. If you survive, you’ll find refuge in a 3* hotel.
Day 6:Sighisoara - Poiana Brasov. November 1st is in fact the Romanian Halloween, so here comes round two! Day 7:Poiana Brasov - Sibiu. You’ll travel today to Sinaia, the pearl of mountain resorts in Romania; visit Peles Castle, one of the most beautiful royal residences in Europe. Today you’re also introduced to the famous Bran Castle in Transylvania. The castle owes its fame to its unique charm, its history and to the myth Bram Stoker created around Dracula. Not far from here is the Horror Castle, a special treat for the strong-hearted! For a walk on the famous Bridge of Liars you’ll travel to Sibiu, a city with a wonderful medieval charm, excellent views of the surrounding landscape and great food. Accommodate in a 3* hotel. how this holiday makes a difference
These tours offer you a well rounded Romanian experience, introducing you to Transylvania’s finest scenery and folklore and providing you with the possibility of getting in contact with the genuine peasant culture by exploring rural areas, the work shops of famous artists and craftsmen, visiting museums or landscapes made famous in the Romanian literature. Besides the economic aspect – we use only local suppliers - your visit is of great importance for the artist, craftsmen, museums, castles or the small rural communities you’ll visit as it provides them with the a motivation, a reason to carry on the traditions. You’ll be able to purchase locally goods starting with food and ending with souvenirs, handicrafts.

Being small group tours, these trips not only minimise the negative impact on the environment but also allow you to interact more easily with the locals, giving you the possibility to learn about culture and traditions straight from the source. Our trips take you to the workshop of a skilled wood craftsman, Grogore Tulean, from Maramures, to the workshop of a skilled artist, unique in the world as the only one using spider webs for his paintings, and to the windswept “Dogarilor Tower” in Bistriata Citadel to meet the honourable Misiuga, the 83 years old Baron of Dracula who will present his puppet exposition, made entirely from disposed materials and objects (everything from an old button to a broken lighter is recycled to become a puppet!)

To give you a full taste of the local culture you’ll delight yourself with home cooked traditional meals, like in Ieud, in the Maramures region or shop for souvenirs in Madam Monica Cosma’s small but very interesting shop offering one of the finest selection of handicrafts in Romania.

To make sure the money stays where needed we only use local suppliers and where the itinerary allows us we also use small family run businesses, like in Ieud, a beautiful traditional village located in the magical Maramures, where you’ll accommodate in guest houses. This is actually an ideal opportunity to spend more time with the locals but also ensure that the financial benefits of your visit reach the people of the area and not some large companies based outside the region.

The entry fees will help maintain and even restore the precious tourist attractions visited throughout the tour. We’re also making financial contributions for every persons who books one of our tours, in the amount of £1 per person to support Saint Daniel’s Foundation programme entitled 'A grand father for a nephew – A nephew for a grandfather', helping elderly and orphans, people most in need.

We encourage our guests do a little reading before coming to find out more about their host communities and the environment so that they can connect better with the locals. We provide suggestions on how best to support the local economies and communities, as well as the surrounding environment. Guests will receive a pre-trip information pack via e-mail, to minimise the use of paper, which will inform them about issues relating to the place they will travel, some language tips and general advice. Furthermore, our tour guides are well-educated multilingual people who can offer guests their skills as an interpreter and offer insights on current national and regional issues.
