the amazing things you'll be doing
This placement in Tanzania is designed to fit into the Summer Holiday period and give you the chance to experience another culture without having to take a full Gap Year. This would be ideal for students and teachers wanting to do something rewarding with their summer. You will benefit from all of the support and knowledge that we can give you both before departure and through our fantastic in-country representatives. Tanzania has the very best of Africa-snow capped Kilimanjaro, tropical coastline and the world’s finest game parks. You will be based in and around Arusha, a bustling town that lies on the foothills of the Mount Meru.
Your placement will start with a 4 day, 3 night safari in the Serengeti, Lake Manyara and The Ngoro Ngoro crater. Here you can hope to see the big 5 (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Cape Buffalo) as well as much, much more.
The next four weeks will see you settled in to your project of choice allowing you to do something really valued whilst embarking on a personal adventure and learning all about a new culture.
Extension: You have the option to stay for a further week at the end of your placement you can either make independent travel plans or come on an organised trip to climb Kilimanjaro. The climb takes 5 to 6 days and will leave you with stunning memories of Africa. At an extra £550 this trip is excellent value and includes food, compulsory porters and park fees.
Whatever your skills are they can be utilised in these projects; from teaching to manual labour there is a niche for you to make a difference to a struggling region of Africa. Additionally your passions such as sport, music, drama and singing will all be hugely appreciated and many of our Tanzanian volunteers have quoted these activities with local children as their personal highlights.
You will be living with other volunteers in basic, safe and secure accommodation close to the project or school that you will be working at. All volunteers are within easy reach of each other and meet in Arusha.

a day in the life of a volunteer
We have a variety of projects that have evolved since our first volunteers arrived in 2000. There are two local orphanages where you can help provide a loving home for unwanted children. If you are interested in healthcare we have volunteer places on a local Aids awareness program as well as a local hospital. We have opportunities in nurseries and schools to assist with childcare and cultural exchanges. We also have community projects such as literacy classes, support for abused women and building work. We also have an exciting new project for anyone with a passion for sports who is willing to help out as a sports coach in Arusha. One particular option would be the Tanzania Rugby Program for local schools. Finally volunteers can now gain experience as a journalist on a local Arusha newspaper. Whatever your skills are they can be utilised in these projects; from teaching to manual labour there is a niche for you to make a difference to a struggling region of Africa. how this holiday makes a difference
|
The whole placement is geared towards helping the local community. We place volunteers in communities where they will make a valuable and worthwhile contribution to the locals. Volunteers will be living within school grounds with other volunteers. By working and living locally participants will become immersed in the country and will live in a way that is harmonious with the culture and environment. The accommodation is locally owned and any food provided is locally sourced and cooked by locals.
Volunteers are needed in Arusha, where there is a mix of wealth and extreme poverty. The area has little infrastructure and no welfare system. This means that the vulnerable within the society are in need of external help to provide them with basics such as education. Volunteers have had a really positive effect on the community. As well as teaching, past volunteers have helped build classrooms, educate local street children and individually sponsor their host families. A percentage of the cost of the placement will go to the local projects. We do not actually donate a set amount of money per volunteer as we prefer to assess the needs of the school and buy specific things (such as brick, chairs, fences). However at least £50 from each volunteer goes to the school in some form. The group size of volunteers is small so that the cultural impact is minimal and there is more integration with the society. Our company is an environmentally responsible one that operates recycling and reusing of waste products. We also offset carbon emissions in our office (gas, electricity, business mileage) and offer co offsetting schemes with our participants for any flights booked with us. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
