the amazing things you'll be doing
With a population of around 3.9 million Costa Rica have a good record of producing talented footballers and are now widely considered the rising star of FIFA's North and Central American CONCACAF region. Players from Costa Rica have a rare ability to combine strength and power with spectacular skill. The fans also always show a great passion for the game, which was highlighted by the travelling supporters to various recent World Cup tournaments, in 1990, 2002 & 2006. The future looks bright for Costa Rican football.
There are many children in Costa Rica who wish to participate in sports projects but for some a lack of resources means limited opportunity. Through our football project in Costa Rica young players are given a proper chance to take part. As part of our football project in Costa Rica you will join one of the many teams competing in the after-school 'Little League' in Liberia, a town in the north west of the country, where we are based. Over 400 children take part in the Little League programme. They are aged between 5 and 11 years old and many come from low income families. Volunteers coach football to all of these children through a structured programme. For volunteers with no coaching experience a football coaching manual can be provided.
At the same time, however, it is really important at this age that playing football is about enjoyment and participation. This makes your role easier as these children all have a real passion for sport and are eager to be involved. Your job as a football coach, with the help of your supervisor, is to make sure the fun and the desire both continue. Other tasks include planning match strategies, taking practice games and probably assisting in team selection too. So if you have sport coaching experience - or just a love of football - you can play a major part in this progressive sporting experience.

a day in the life of a volunteer
During school hours you will have the opportunity to work within a local school assisting the physical education teachers with their classes. They teach basketball, volleyball and football in this part of Costa Rica. Everyone gets involved: teachers, volunteers, parents and coaches. As a football coach in Costa Rica you will be responsible for the development of young footballers' basic skills and techniques. Volunteers will co-ordinate and plan coaching sessions to develop - for example - ball-control, accurate passing, keeping possession and moving into space. The age of the children means they are at an ideal age to be taught the basics and to learn the foundations for their future. volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you are looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world. Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
You will be working with local youngsters aged 5-11 years old helping to coach alongside some passionate local coaches. In Liberia there is plenty of little league football that is played by youngsters of all abilities and backgrounds. You don't need to be an experienced coach but you need to be able to pass on your enthusiasm for the sport to the eager local students. You will find yourself to be a popular member of the community working on this project as well as giving local youngsters a real chance to develop their skills.
We take seriously our responsibilities towards the communities we work with in Costa Rica. We have full time local staff on the ground that will meet you from the airport, give you an induction on arrival and support you from our local office throughout your stay. They are local people who we pay a good local wage and can give you all the information and support you will need during your stay. They have been trained by us to work with visiting volunteers. In Costa Rica you will be staying with a local family. We pay the family where you will be staying. This means that the money goes directly into the local economy. The food you eat, the chairs you sit on have all probably been made in the town where you will be staying. Living in Costa Rica will give you an opportunity to be a real part of the local community. Most of the money that you spend during your time at the placement will be at grassroots level going into local Costa Rican businesses. Our organisation is environmentally responsible. We recycle at our offices and offset our carbon emissions from staff flying to our destinations around the world. We believe that actions like this can be the first step towards preserving the planet for future generations. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
