introduction to Mongolia community volunteering

If you've ever fancied really getting away from it all, forget exotic beaches or desert islands: volunteering in Mongolia on our Nomad Project is the thing for you! Forty per cent of the population of Mongolia are from Nomadic families; people who wander the endless steppe on camels or horses, with their livestock. Join our Nomadic Life placement and you'll join a group of Mongolian Nomads and experience a way of living that has barely changed in a thousand years.

Our cultural project in Mongolia is a unique volunteering opportunity; working and living with some of Mongolia's nomads allows you to learn about a unique group of people and their ancient way of life through your own personal experiences. It is also a good opportunity to gain experience of looking after animals such as goats, cows, yaks and horses.
the project
Volunteers live with a family in large round tents known as Gers which are surprisingly cosy and comfortable. Your daily life may include riding horses to move herds of yaks or cattle, caring for livestock, helping to produce dairy products such as butter and cheese and maybe teaching a little English. It is a great way to learn more about this ancient way of life and how it is being affected by modern-day Mongolia. In exchange for helping with the animals or playing with the children, your host family will fully involve you in their domestic life.

Volunteers with an interest in sports will find themselves very popular if they join in with games of basketball and volleyball. You can get to know your Nomadic family better by playing traditional Mongolian games, teaching some English and perhaps learning a bit of the Mongol language. In addition to this, you are sure to get involved with the milking of the livestock. And all the while you will be enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Mongolian Steppe.

Dinosaur-bone trek in the Gobi Desert in Outer Mongolia: While you are on the project you will have the chance to spend a few nights camping in an area of the stunning Gobi Desert where you can look for dinosaur bones which lay strewn across the landscape.
volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.
how this holiday makes a difference
You will be living and working alongside Mongolian nomadic families. You will be part of their family helping out with all the daily chores from gathering in camel dung to light the fire to helping look after the children in the family. You will fully immerse yourself in local life. You are living in an amazing location on the Mongolian steppe. The local families enjoy having a visitors helping them out with their everyday life.

We take seriously our responsibilities towards the communities we work with in Mongolia. We have full time staff on the ground that will meet you from the airport, give you an induction on arrival and support you throughout your stay. They are local people who we pay a good local wage and can give you all the information and support you will need during your stay. They have been trained by us to work with visiting volunteers.

In Mongolia the local family you stay with are paid. This means that the money goes directly into the local economy. The food you eat, the chairs you sit on will all be locally produced. Living with a local nomadic family will give you an opportunity to be a real part of the local community. Most of the money that you spend during your time in Mongolia will be at grassroots level going into local businesses. Our organisation is environmentally responsible. We recycle at our offices and offset our carbon emissions from staff flying to our destinations around the world. We believe that actions like this can be the first step towards preserving the planet for future generations.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
