the amazing things you'll be doing
In association with the Orangutan Foundation we will be visiting and photographing the wild life in the Tanjung Puting National Park, Borneo. This trip is aimed at anyone who would like to develop their photography skills using a mixture of tutorials and one-on-one advice. As well as over 4000 orangutans, this bio-diversity hotspot is home to 30 other mammal species, 260 types of birds and 17 different reptiles.
There are no roads in this national park so will explore everyday by boat and on foot. As we gently glide along gorgeous rivers we will get incredibly close views of a huge variety of wildlife including orangutans, proboscis monkeys, agile gibbons, crocodiles, hornbills, kingfishers and lots of other birds. We will also visit orangutan feeding stations which provide additional food for released orangutans and the famous Camp Leakey research centre.
People will stay at a comfortable and eco friendly rain forest lodge and the trip will be escorted by a local guide, photographer Ian Wood and Ashley Leiman (OBE), director of the orangutan foundation. Suitable for anyone with a digital camera and a love of nature. Above all else we want the trip to be fun!
The group is limited to 6 people and £250 per person is donated directly to The Orangutan Foundation to help them continue to protect this vital area of rain forest. The situation in this national park has been very positive for some time with no illegal logging taking place for over 2 years. The best time to go is Sep-Oct or Apr-May.

how this holiday makes a difference
|
We only make use of local suppliers and services. These include locally owned and run accommodation and food from local produce. This ensures that the funds generated from these stay within the country and filter to the local economy. We also only employ local guides and boatmen in order to contribute to the economy of the local community.
£250 per person from the Orangutan photography holiday is donated directly to the Orangutan Foundation to help them conserve the Tanjung Puting national park. Through their work they have created numerous local jobs in this area such as at the research centre, the orangutan care centre and at a network of guard posts in the Tanjung Puting national park. Some of these jobs are at guard posts at strategic points along the rivers. Only Indonesians are employed on these guard posts and they are paid above the local rate. They are an important way in helping to conserve this national park as they stop people such as illegal loggers entering the area. A park entry fee is paid for each visitor which directly contributes to the running of this national park. For distribution of tour information and pre and post booking we only use the internet and email. Where ever possible we try and run a paper free office. Our office only uses green electricity and we keep consumption as low as possible. All lights are energy efficient and computers are turned off at night. Everything that can be recycled is recycled and all green waste is composted. The majority of our food consumed at our office is organically grown in our garden. Other produce is fair trade where possible. The accommodation we use in the Tanjung Puting national park has an emphasis on environmental protection through education of both guests and staff. They recycle water and waste, use solar power and have a worm farm for composting. Each tour group is limited to just 6 people to minimize the impact on the local eco system. Any areas we visit are to be left as we find them. No litter is to be left behind and nothing is to be removed by us or our clients. We will avoid damaging vegetation, flora and fauna. We will only introduce our clients to areas where the community welcomes them and we will provide accurate pre-trip information on the social and political situation in the destination. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
