the amazing things you'll be doing
This 8-day trek gives you the unique opportunity to discover the majestic Kaieteur Falls and Guyana's fascinating and unspoilt rainforest on foot.
Discover the jungle by foot and canoe, cool off at Guyana's many waterfalls and get close to nature as you spot a jaguar (if you are lucky!) or admire the bright orange Cock of the Rock. Our experienced local guides make this adventure a very special one as they share their knowledge of Guyana's fascinating flora and fauna, and tell the ancient tales of their ancestors. At night you camp in beautiful locations where you'll experience the unforgettable sounds of the rainforest by night.
As you reach the Kaieteur falls, one of the highlights of every Guyana trip, a steep 4 hour climb brings you to its top where all strains are washed away with our first glimpse of the mighty Kaieteur - highest single-drop waterfall in the world. Spending the night at the Kaieteur Guesthouse gives you the incredible opportunity to see the early morning mist of Kaieteur lifts to give fantastic views of the falls. An unforgettable adventure!

day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | Georgetown. Arrival in Georgetown, Guyana. |
| Day 2: | Georgetown. Guided city tour of Georgetown. In the afternoon briefing on overland trip. |
| Day 3: | Amatuk. We depart Georgetown in the morning and on our way pass through the bauxite town of Linden and miles and miles of lush rainforest and rolling hills, before reaching the bustling gold-mining town of Mahdia. From here it is not far to Pamela, where we catch a boat for the last 2 ½ hours of our journey, taking us to Amatuk. Here, on this beautiful island of white sand with the 170 ft drop Amatuk falls just a few yards away, you camp for the night. |
| Day 4: | Waratuk. Today you leave by foot, trekking through the jungle, swimming across creeks and walking across jungle bridges (tree trunks). A short boat-ride through the rapids and you arrive at Waratuk where you set up camp. |
| Day 5: | Tukiet. The enigmatic Ibini mountain range in a distance is your constant companion as you set off on foot for Tukiet, at the bottom of the Kaieteur Falls. A cool dip in the river with the beautiful 'Old Man's Beard' waterfall flowing gently down a steep drop from high up the mountain just across the river, and a delicious lunch will put you in top gear to begin your climb up the 'O my God' mountain. The feeling of achievement is indescribable as you proudly view the grandeur of the mighty Kaieteur Falls, the highest single-drop waterfalls in the world |
| Day 6: | Kaieteur Park. A tour around the Kaieteur Park will prove to be a truly fascinating experience. You will get the chance to view the Kaieteur Falls from several vantage points that offer excellent photo opportunities. With stealth and a little patience you can get a close-up view of the beautiful, but poisonous 'golden frog' and, if you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of the brilliantly coloured, orange 'Cock-of-the-rock'. |
| Day 7: | Georgetown. After another night at the top of the Kaieteur we prepare for our return to Georgetown. On the plane to Guyana's capital, you get a final, spectacular aerial view of Kaieteur Falls and the gorge and the awe-inspiring expanse of rainforest and rivers. |
| Day 8: | Return to UK. |
how this holiday makes a difference
|
We operate ecologically sensitive tourism through responsible behaviour towards the environment. We provide the maximum benefit to the local communities by involving them in all activities.
On our treks we use locally produced fresh produce, buying from villages where possible. In preference we choose local over imported goods. We pack out all non-organic waste and minimize this by using products with minimum packaging, leaving no litter and keeping all water sources clean, leaving camp-sites cleaner than we find them. We bury organic waste at a suitable depth. When out on tour we encourage learning about Guyana, the local culture of the teams we work with and the areas we pass through. Our guides hold informal talks with groups to inform about and discuss with them all aspects of local life. This helps understanding of the area and appreciation of the people who live there. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
