introduction to Botswana cycling tours

The Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana is where herds of elephant, giraffe, wildebeest and zebra have roamed the dramatic, rugged landscape for thousands of years. Ancient elephant paths provide the cycling ‘single track’, which interlace a mosaic of undulating savanna, riparian forest, rocky outcrops and wooded floodplains. We offer 4 days of guided 'mountain biking free-riding at its best'. Ride super buffed game paths, sleep under the starlit skies, encounter big game and explore the ancient Land of Giants.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Meet at Border, ride to wilderness camp. We meet on the South African side at Pont Drift Border Post at 13h00. Once done with border formalities, we prepare our bikes, load the support vehicle and enjoy a light lunch we bike to our 1st wilderness camp. After an exhilarating afternoon ride we arrive to chilled drinks, a hot bucket shower and a wholesome dinner. Our temporary, low-impact, fully equipped wilderness camp provide for an unforgettable nights rest after a hard days ride. Meals are prepared on open fires. Starlit skies and night sounds will awaken your senses, and a night under canvas will inspire your instincts.
Day 2:Explore. After a night under the stars, awake early to fresh brewed coffee and breakfast, prepare bikes and head off to uncharted terrains. Discover new skills as rocky outcrops, sandy riverbeds and open plains test biking abilities. We’ll break for a tea/drinks stop along route and arrive back at camp for lunch. A welcome afternoon siesta follows. The late afternoon will bring the chance to ride or drive to a nearby sundowner point.
Day 3:Ride to Kgotla. Today brings a new dawn and we bike out towards Kgotla, our last camp. Testing terrain and changing landscapes make for a great ride. A pasta lunch and hot showers welcome weary legs and an opportunity to sit back, relax and savour that sense of achievement. After an afternoon of leisure, we head off for a short walk to a nearby cliff for a sundowner. Return to an open fire prepared meal, fireside chatter and restful nights sleep under the stars concludes the safari on a high.
Day 4:Departure. Breakfast on Day 4 brings an end to the safari with a departure by vehicle or bike to arrive at Pont Drift by 11h00

Optional Add-on Day 4: We can highly recommend an extra night at Mashatu Tent Camp for a chance to view the reserve’s wildlife at close quarters from a game viewing vehicle. We can assist you with your reservation.
how this holiday makes a difference
In a region that has historically provided traditional vehicle safaris, we offer an alternative land use with a lower impact on the local environment. We’ve designed our trips to further minimize the impact on the environment by minimizing vehicle travel and maximizing bicycle travel. We operate low impact temporary wilderness camps which are rotated to allow localized recovery. We practice sustainable practices such as water and wood conservation and waste re-cycling. We have installed solar energy lighting into our staff housing.

We employ local guides and provide training and skills development related to guiding, first aid, bike maintenance, food preparation and hospitality. We currently employ 6 permanent staff, 4 of which are from impoverished backgrounds in rural Botswana. In addition we employ 3 part-time mountain bike guides.

Our Trees4Bikes project is aimed towards raising funds to provide local school kids with bikes, alleviating the need for extended walks or bus transport to schools. Young trees are germinated, cared for and ultimately planted by junior school children, in our neighbouring Botswana villages. Monies raised through our guests will go towards providing children with bicycles.

All riding takes place on natural game paths on both our trips. We do not drive off-road. We encounter plentiful wildlife on our trips. Safety is our priority and we maintain safe distances of at least 50m. We remain very sensitive to creating disturbance, which is inevitable, and allow wildlife to move away freely.

In the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, Botswana, we are very concerned at the amount of wood collected and used for fires, for cooking, lighting and camp fires by various land-uses. We limit our wood consumption to the absolute minimum, that is for cooking and keeping a small fire going in camp at night for security. We constantly inform guests of the scarcity of wood and explain the need to use as little as possible. We also make guests aware of the need to conserve water which is particularly pertinent in a semi-arid area.

Our trips are designed to minimize vehicle travel and maximise bicycle travel. Our Botswana camps are low-impact and entirely temporary. Camps are set up each day prior to the arrival of the group. We provide 3 waste bins for glass, plastics and tins. These items are removed to a central waste area after each trip where they are sorted and sent for recycling in Selebi-Pikwe.

The only energy requirements are lighting by means of gas and cooking by means of a fire. Water is brought with us, collected from a local borehole, and used for cooking, cleaning and showers. We have managed to ration water to 20l per person without impacting on comfort. We use a waterless pit latrine.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
