introduction to Chiang Mai day tours, canopy adventure tours
Chiang Mai day tours, canopy adventure tours
Created by a bunch of guys keen to enable everyone access to the rainforest in the most exciting way possible. For thrill seekers and nature lovers alike there has never been a more easy way to explore the tropical rainforest! Our unique system enables you to view jungle life from a perspective previously reserved for a select group of researchers. We take you high into the canopy using an ingenious series of treehouses, platforms, cables, and sky bridges for about a two kilometre adventure.
Canopy tours originated in the lush rainforests of Costa Rica where adventurous biologists devised a system of cables and platforms that allowed them to study this previously inaccessible ecosystem. It wasn't long before this developed into a breathtaking eco-tourism activity that not only allowed people to enter and experience the upper realm of a rainforest, but raised awareness to the plight and beauty of the world's endangered indigenous forests.
This Chiang Mai day tour is designed to be easy for all visitors to descend along the downhill network, taking time to linger and relax at special places along the way and sharing the experience. Old growth rainforest has several layers, all of which can be seen on the tour.
Located in ancient forests on a Thai preserve 55 minutes from Chiang Mai near the village of Mae Kompong, we chose this beautiful place because here we could offer the the best environment for a thrilling experience in the quiet majesty of the rain forest ecosystem. Your participation helps the ecosystem - we contribute 10% of our profits to the preservation of gibbons and other conservation projects.
We don't have a minimum age for kids - the main criteria is that they are a minimum of 120cm (4 feet tall). Young children are often taken in tandem - either by a responsible adult or a guide. Maximum weight is 150kg (330lbs) which is the max weight of the full harness. Our zip lines and rigging systems greatly exceed international standards.
How big is it? Very big! The total length is about two kilometers and its probably the HIGHEST of it's kind in the world. There are 18 stations or treehouses.
What about kids? The minimum age is 7ish but the main criteria is a minimum of 120cm - young children are often taken in tandem - either by a responsible adult or a guide.
What is the maximum weight? The maximum weight is 135 kg (300 lbs) but this is the max size for the full-body harness - the zip lines and rigging are certified for many, many more times than this.
Is it dangerous? You are led by experienced guides who show you the easy way to be connected to safety lines continuously.
What if I am outside of the Chiang Mai area? There is an extra cost of 300 Baht/person to pick up and return if you are staying outside the Chiang Mai area. This includes areas such as Hang Dong and Mae Rim. Of course, this does not include Bangkok or Chiang Rai. Please contact us for with any questions.
What wildlife is in the forest? Over 200 bird species and an impressive collection of monkeys, bears, wild boars, to name but a few.
What should I bring? Mae Kompong is 1300 meters above sea level and can get chilly - we suggest you bring a light jacket and long pants if you have them and a pair of sports shoes or shoes that do not drop off. Nevertheless none of these items are crucial. A camera is good to bring for the action. Backpacks and sunglasses are an unecessary burden and there are storage facilities in the office when you arrive. It is also good to bring an open mind and a smile...
If it should look like rain during a flight, we still go for it and it can add to the fun - it's not cold and should you like it - there is rainwear available.

How long does it take? It is a one day tour including: about three hours in the canopy on cables and bridges, one hour trekking along Mae Kompong waterfall, about one hour having time for lunch and visiting the village. best time to go
We operate year-round. Monsoon season is one of our favourite times of year, many people have the misconception that it rains continuous heavy downpours for months on end - the truth is quite different - here in Mae Kompong we experience short bursts of heavy rain but generally in the afternoon or evening when the course is closed. We like this time of year because the air is fresh and crisp and all the plant life is blooming... If it should look like rain during a flight, we still go for it and it can add to the fun - it's not cold and should you like it - there is rainwear available.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
Our canopy adventure, while designed by New Zealand and Austrian experts, was fully built using local workers. During this process, we learned as much from them as they learned from us. For example, they taught us to climb up enormous trees using bamboo pegs and ladders, something they have been doing for generations. We then taught them the safety systems required to do high rigging and difficult aerial construction safely. Since this exciting beginning, we have continued this two-way trade in knowledge every step of the way.
Many of the staff that helped build the canopy adventure are now employed full time with the company as guides, office workers, cooks and maintenance staff. We hired most of our staff locally and gave them the necessary training. All our staff are Thai nationals and we regularly bring in foreign experts to do ongoing staff training and certification. All our senior guides have international certification. The staff members have health and accident insurance, a provident fund saving account and share in the profit. All proceeds from the restaurant goes directly to the village committee and the whole village benefits. Our office is working towards a near-paperless system and the village electricity is hydropower. A portion of our sales goes directly to reforestation and primate habitat restoration projects in the area. Working with the local village and temple, the forest service and Chiang Mai University, we have started a forest restoration project near our site. The goal is to restore an overused and overhunted forest to a more healthy, balanced state, such as the one we operate in. In addition, we have started a primate habitat rehabilitation project at a nearby a village. Again, working with the local villagers, the temple, the forest service, and reforestation experts at the University, we are working towards creating a food-rich sanctuary for a longtail macaque group whose number are in decline. This is one of the last-known groups in the area. Working with the forest service, we have started a nursery in order to sustain our reforestation efforts. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
