introduction to Volunteer projects in Cambodia
These projects are based in Siem Reap, the gateway to the temples of Angkor. Whilst the city is booming on the back of tourism, it is hard to escape the poverty that many Cambodians still face and the struggle they have to survive.
We support a number of projects in and around Siem Reap. All share the same ethos which is to create a better future for Cambodian society through education and practical development support.
We run four types of volunteering projects in Cambodia.
Working at one of the schools we support
Teaching English will be the main focus of your work. With Siem Reap booming off the back of tourism, and English the main language of the business World, the teaching of English has been identified as one of the best ways to increase the employment prospects of these children.
Teaching involves much more than lecturing – you will be encouraged to use songs and games to stimulate the children's minds, and make learning more fun. You don't need a formal teaching qualification, but you do need a real desire to make a lasting difference to children's lives, and the confidence to stand up and speak in front of a room full of children. The Khmer teachers also stand to benefit from working alongside a native English speaker, and they will be keen to learn from you. The classes are held either early morning from 6am till 9am and evenings from 4pm till 8pm. You are able to teach the classes that you want to Mon-Fri.
Working at an urban orphanage
You will be working at an urban Orphanage 10 minutes walk from the centre of town. You will be providing care and education to some of Siem Reap's street children. The mission is to brake the poverty cycle by giving the children a high standard of education so they can progress to reputable employment. Your time spent here really will be a rewarding experience and would be of great benefit as we believe that your background and experience offers these children valuable insight into the modern world.
There are 2 classrooms that are used to teach English to the orphans who live on-site and children in the local community. We encourage volunteers to take activities with the younger children and there are other ways for volunteers to get involved such as taking art classes and trying to introduce new ideas to the children through games.
Rural house building and development
Fancy some hard work and don't mind getting dirty? When you volunteer for a building and community project with us in Cambodia you'll find yourself contributing to vital long term development, which help families, orphans and disadvantaged children.
While working in the rural villages we always ensure that the community is involved in our work, giving them ownership of the development process. We expect you to be able to set an example by showing initiative, suggesting ideas which could improve the project and by keeping a positive attitude. Whatever you do you'll be making a direct impact on a country's present environment and future development, while experiencing the local culture from within.
Medical program
We support Medicorps, an NGO specialising in medical aid and assistance in Cambodia by sending western medical professionals to support their program. At Medicorps over the past few years a mix of medical and non-medical volunteers from 5 different countries have engaged in wide range of activities such as video production, data management, leadership seminars, computer literacy training, English language courses and, of course, medical instruction. Some volunteers have participated in several missions throughout the years. The experience of poverty and suffering with grace often had a profound impact on their lives, heightening the feelings of empathy and compassion.
Our role is to aid you in working in the medical field in Cambodia through local support and advise. We suggest that a 1 month minimum is considered, and taking some language classes for the first couple of weeks will help you immensely.
Accommodation: You will stay at Victory guesthouse which is a 10 minute walk from town and offers you a comfortable on-suite fan room with double bed and a basic western breakfast.

a day in a life of a volunteer
No two days are the same, there is so much you could be doing, you’ll be teaching and learning together with children and the community and one day you could be out farming or planting trees and the next visiting the local sites with the volunteers and friends you make out here.how this holiday makes a difference
|
We take our responsibilities towards the communities we work with in Cambodia seriously. We have full time local staff on the ground that will meet you from the airport, give you an induction on arrival and support you from our local office throughout your stay. They have been trained by us to work with visiting volunteers.
Our trips are designed to be two way experiences and encourage our volunteers to immerse themselves into the culture and learn its history. In Cambodia you will be staying in a locally owned guest house with other volunteers and we also recognize that volunteers spend their own money on drinks, transport, souvenirs, services (taxis), medical care, park fees which are major contributors to local supplier’s incomes and the overall economy. We invest at least 70% of your placement fee in the local community, local salaries or local suppliers. Living in Cambodia will give you an opportunity to be a real part of the local community. Our organisation is environmentally responsible. We recycle at our offices and offset our carbon emissions from staff flying to our destinations around the world and actively invest in a local reforestation project (3 4 1 Trees for Life) in Cambodia on an ongoing basis. We believe that volunteering is vital to developing a better future in which we work, however we always ensure that you are not replacing local staff, if there is an alternative we will help fund this - Let's be the change in the world! |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
