introduction to Masai Mara safari with Jackson Looseyai

Join the star of the BBC’s Big Cat Live series, Jackson Looseyai, on a luxury safari in the Masai Mara. Jackson and his Masai guiding colleagues will show you a hidden and fascinating side to the Mara which most visitors never see.

Every year the Masai Mara hosts what is regarded as the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth, 'the migration'. Between July and October, over a million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra pass through on their endless journey, following the rains in search of fresh green grass. From our camp’s wonderful setting on the Talek river, you may witness the spectacular river crossings and the frenzy of predator activity.

Our camp offers a highly intimate Masai Mara safari experience, with just 7 luxurious tents, all set on the banks of the river. An ideal destination for a honeymoon or a relaxing safari in a wild and beautiful corner of the Masai Mara. The camp is also a superb choice for a family safari in the Masai Mara, with Jackson and the brilliant team of local Masai guides leading a range of fascinating activities for children including tracking and bush picnics in remote corners of the game reserve.

Guests fly directly from Nairobi in around 45 minutes and are collected from the nearby airstrip for a short transfer by 4-wheel drive to our camp in the heart of the Masai Mara.

Highlights include:

  • Wildlife safaris
  • Walking safaris
  • Bush picnics
  • Masai culture

Best time to go: Any time of year except April, May and November when the camp is closed due to rains in the Masai Mara.

We offer many itineraries and below is a sample 3 night / 4 day itinerary which may be extended as your safari schedule allows.
  • day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:To the Masai Mara . Depart Nairobi and fly directly to the Masai Mara. On arrival, your local Masai hosts and guides will meet you and transfer you to camp, which lies in a secluded stand of mature trees on the banks of the beautiful Talek river, in the Masai Mara's richest wildlife area. Settle in and join your local Masai guides for an afternoon wildlife drive. Enjoy sundowner drinks and your first evening in the Masai Mara.
Day 2-3:Explore the Masai Mara. During your stay you’ll enjoy a series of exciting morning and evening wildlife drives and for those who are interested, we highly recommend a walking safari or bush walk with highly experienced and trained local Masai guides. There will be the opportunity to see all of the Big Five and the Masai Mara is famed for its predators, as seen on the BBC’s Big Cat Live series. At any time of year, you will see significant herds of wildebeest, gazelles, elephant and buffalo - and if you are fortunate, the Masai Mara’s rhinos. If your stay is between approximately July and October, your visit will coincide with the annual great wildebeest migration, when the herds swell and vast numbers of wildebeest and zebra arrive from the Serengeti and create one of the earth’s great wildlife spectacles. Our camp offers a superb blend of views, comfort and understated luxury. Meals are prepared by skilled local chefs and served in the dining tent overlooking the river. The 7 guest tents all offer spacious accommodation and en-suite bathrooms. Fresh water is filtered for guests and there are a wide selection of soft drinks, beer and good quality wines available with meals.
Day 4:Depart Masai Mara. After breakfast you will depart the Masai Mara and return to the nearby airstrip and fly onwards to Nairobi, arriving just before lunchtime in time to connect with onward safari arrangements or international travel.

how this holiday makes a difference
Our camp is a partnership between one of Kenya’s foremost conservation and safari families and Jackson Looseyai of BBC Big Cat Live fame – the first and arguably the best Masai guide in the Masai Mara. Our camp was established in the mid 1980s and has long been renowned for its fabulous hospitality and firm commitment to employing only local Masai guides. Over the years, our safaris have funded and supported a wide range of conservation initiatives in the greater Masai Mara ecosystem and most recently, our camp was instrumental in setting up the inspiring Koiyaki Guiding School, which was opened in 2005 for the purpose of training local Masai guides (men and women) in wildlife management, safari guiding and conservation.

The future of the Masai Mara depends solely on the local people deriving benefit from the wildlife. Without any benefits, they will be disempowered and will be far less inclined to protect their wildlife. The Masai have always respected wildlife as an integral part of their culture and the future of the region depends upon their continued involvement.

By choosing us for your Masai Mara safari, you are supporting a shining example of conservation tourism in one of the earth’s most precious wilderness areas. Your visit provides vital income to the local Masai people and guests are directly helping to sustain the region’s incredible natural heritage. We very much hope you will join Jackson and the team in the Mara!

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
