the amazing things you'll be doing
Our luxury tour of the Colombian Caribbean coast begins with Cartagena, where you spend 3 nights. Cartagena sits on the Caribbean coast and is a wonderfully picturesque, walled-in fishing port of pastel-painted buildings, fine cathedrals, and plenty of Spanish colonial architecture and 17th-century forts that allow you to steep yourself in the history of this UNESCO declared World Heritage Site. The white-sand beaches are sublime, the restaurants are excellent and the hotel we have selected the best in town.
You stay in a beautifully designed boutique hotel housed in a carefully renovated seventeenth century Spanish Colonial mansion in the heart of the city. Your suite is exquisitely decorated with Colombian antiques and interesting pieces which the owners have collected on their extensive travels.
Our next destination is Baru Island. 4 nights on the beautiful island of Baru, a one hour boat ride from Cartagena, your boutique island retreat awaits you. Your bungalow comes with its own private pool and solarium. The hotel, which has only three rooms, is situated right by the beach, with its white sands and dock over the sea of the Cienaga of Cholon. Here you can try out water sports such as snorkelling and water skiing.
The following day, a private boat trip to the natural aquarium, located in the middle of the sea on one of the islands, will continue this unforgettable marine experience. You will be able to see various sea-life species, as you walk over wooden planks divided by nets, and you will also have the opportunity to swim with the dolphins.

|
Your hotel in Cartagena employs locally sourced staff, as do we for all your tours and other such excursions. Employing local people will allow you to step out of the tourist bracket, and discover much more of this city than usually possible. Equally important to us is giving these staff the opportunity to earn money, improve their English and show off their home to you. They are immensely proud of their city, making them extremely good at their job, energetic and fun.
All food and materials on Baru are sourced locally where possible, the pousada being a valuable customer to these locals. The fish for dinner will have been caught by fishermen earlier that day and vegetables come from local gardens. The small size of the pousada (only three rooms), also means that it has a minimum environmental impact on its beautiful surroundings, as well as allowing a more personal involvement with the local staff. Part of the cost of your holiday goes towards the planting of 20 hard wood trees in the Mata Atlantica, under the guidance of R.E.G.U.A. (Reserva Ecologica de Guapi Assu) who protect one of the last stands of primary tropical rainforest left in the severely depleted Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
