the amazing things you'll be doing
In depth tour of the Grand Canyon National Park and Havasupai Canyon.

After a short drive from Phoenix, we arrive to Grand Canyon National Park with ample time to enjoy the trails, a scenic helicopter flight and the sublime sunsets. After visiting historic Route 66, trek 16km to our inclusive luxury riverside base-camp in Havasupai Canyon and explore the surreal waterfalls of this remote, Native American Tribal Reservation.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Arrive Phoenix / Scottsdale. Arrive into Phoenix and transfer (not included) to our gateway hotel at your leisure. Rest of day to relax and prepare for your adventure. Meals: Paid locally. Accommodation: Hotel included
Day 2:Grand Canyon National Park. After our morning briefing, we leave Phoenix behind as we begin our journey with the morning sun. Home to national parks and forests, national monuments and deserts, Arizona is also home to some of the most picturesque waterfalls in the world; and our first day takes us to Arizona's most famous resident, Grand Canyon National Park. Approximately 450 kilometres long, the Grand Canyon is one of the most impressive national parks in the USA. The South Kaibab and Bright Angel trails offer incredible views of the vast park and there will be opportunities for a ranger guided day hike as well as exploring trails at your own pace to discover the inimitable canyon. Meals: Paid locally. Accommodation: Hotel included
Day 3:Grand Canyon & Route 66. We will take our time to appreciate the dramatic sunrise over the crimson-ochre canyon walls. And a visit to the Grand Canyon would not be complete without a birds-eye view; and if you're interested, our guide will organize a scenic helicopter flight to appreciate the canyon's full grandeur. From the Grand Canyon, we visit historic Route 66 for a taste of Americana and a get good night's rest before making our way to the Havasupai Tribal Reservation, where the "Havasu Baaja", or "People of the Blue Green Water", make their home. Meals: Paid locally. Accommodation: Hotel included
Day 4:Havasupai Tribal Reservation. We start our morning trek with the dawn; and leaving early to avoid the midday sun, we begin the 13 km descent deep into the heart of the reservation. The trail is moderately difficult, with initially steep switchbacks for the first three kilometres, and then it becomes rocky further along. You will only need to carry a day pack with necessities such as water, snacks and your camera as we will support the hike with pack mules to carry the luggage. Along the way, we will undoubtedly pass other hikers and possibly a train of pack horses, as the Havasupai Reservation is the only place in the United States of America that still receives its mail via horse/mule train. Don't try and stroke the horses or it could delay someone's mail! Upon arrival to the reservation, we will make ourselves at home at our luxury base camp along the river. Meals: Included. Accommodation: Luxury Camping included
Day 5-6:Havasupai Tribal Reservation. With daily guided hikes we will explore the beautiful Havasu, Navajo and Mooney Waterfalls, as well as nearby hidden canyons and refreshing natural swimming pools. Delicious, hearty meals will be prepared daily for you at camp and provide you with plenty of energy. And there will be ample time to relax, take in the beautiful views, or even trek to the Colorado River itself, 30km further down! Meals: Included. Accommodation: Luxury Camping included
Day 7-8:Havasupai & Phoenix. We will hike the 16km back to "civilization" (a scenic helicopter flight may be available) before returning to Phoenix for an included hotel night and the finish of this inspiring trip of a lifetime. Meals: Paid locally. Accommodation: Hotel included. Tour will end in Phoenix on day 8.

how this holiday makes a difference
This trip is designed for those who enjoy walking/hiking, want to explore the Grand Canyon and Havasupai Falls’ natural beauty and discover why visitors are so passionate about this beautiful region. We travel in small, intimate groups (maximum of 13 passengers) and have the benefit of a professionally trained local guide who knows the best places in the national park, tribal lands and wilderness areas to respectfully observe wildlife, to enjoy fun, adventurous activities and appreciate the flavours of the local culture.

This tour is camping based from April through November. We will overnight in a combination of comfortable tourist class hotels and at our established riverside campground in the Havasupai Tribal Lands. When camping, our group is self sufficient as we provide all camping equipment (except sleeping bag) and state of the art field kitchen. All meals whilst camping are prepared freshly by our guides and are included in the price. When lodging, we eat our meals in locally owned restaurants. Throughout the trip we utilize established local suppliers for activities en route that help support local business and keep money in the community, with a prime benefactor being the Havasupai Native Americans.

We have over 35 years of experience operating small-group adventure tours (13 client maximum) throughout North/Central/South America that foster understanding, appreciation and conservation of the cultures and environments we visit. We are committed to working with our clients and the peoples of our host destinations to ensure direct economic benefits at a community level. Whether we visit Grand Canyon National Park or Havasupai Tribal Lands, we aim to operate beyond best practice guidelines and to provide a tour programme that creates a positive impact on the lands that we visit and a lasting impression for those who travel with us.

We achieve this by implementing the following methods:
  • Working with Local Guides - The tour is led by our fully trained local guides. Prior to leading our groups, guides must successfully complete our pre-season intensive training programme which lasts approximately 4 weeks. During this time we support the guides with accommodation, activities and supplemental salary.
  • Local Arrangements - We utilize private vehicle and local suppliers for accommodation and activities throughout to ensure the economic benefit stays in the local community. This includes working with local operators and lodging in locally owned hotels/lodges whenever possible. Also, we partner with the Havasupai Tribal members whose wranglers and horses assist us on the 10 mile hike into the Havasupai Canyon.
  • When staying in hotels or lodges, we endeavour to eat our meals in locally owned, family run restaurants which supports local business, as well as allows passengers to experience local flavour and mix with local people when appropriate
  • When this is a camping based tour, we utilize Havasupai Tribal campgrounds and our group is self sufficient as we provide camping gear, field kitchen and include all meals for our passengers. We shop locally and prepare nearly all of our meals (when camping) together, which supports local business, as well as allows passengers to experience local flavour and mix with local people when appropriate
  • National Park and National Monument Visits- On this tour, we include visits and entry admission to all national parks and monuments listed in the itinerary. Fees support park upkeep and conservation projects, and we encourage our clients to visit the visitor centres for additional information about the region
  • Educating Travellers- Our published traveller’s code of conduct is further promoted by our leaders throughout the tour, and particularly in the first night’s orientation talk. If you would like a copy of our RT policy or traveller’s code of conduct, please contact us prior to your trip or alternatively, download directly from our website. This includes policies on the following:
    • Recycling- Established policy to support recycling (and to educate our clients on recycling) on all of our tours in North/Central/South America. We aim to utilize properties that recycle glass and plastics. When this service is not available, we will pack and store recycling in our own containers and drive them to a suitable facility
    • “Leave No Trace”- Leave No Trace is a national and international campaign designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts about how to reduce their impacts when enjoying the outdoors. Because this trip spends much time exploring the National Parks and "wilderness" areas, familiarizing clients with the "Leave No Trace" ethic will help minimize the impact on the natural environment
  • Carbon Off-Setting- We partner with Climate Care to encourage clients to off-set domestic/international flights. We are committed to off-set vehicles’ emissions and as such, we match client contributions up to £5,000 per year
  • Office Based Energy- 100% of our UK corporate headquarters’ power is green (renewable)
  • Charitable Project Support- We contribute to local charities and projects such as “Tourism Cares for America” (of which we are a founding member), “Friends of Big Bend” and the “Mojave Desert Land Trust”- organizations dedicated to improving and/or expanding national parks.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
