the amazing things you'll be doing
Is this the perfect winter destination?

The snow arrives in November and lies until late April, there's a great range of accommodation with spa facilities, downhill skiing and nordic activities as well as a fabulous Santa experience. Situated 330kms north of Oslo, Savalen enjoys an enviable lakeside setting some 17kms from the nearest town.
You can combine all the nordic activities with downhill skiing on 7 slopes, there's a floodlit cross-country skiing arena with international standard trails, an ice skating rink, Santa's house and workshop and a spa and well-being centre for unwinding and relaxation.

Accommodation
Santa Street Apartments: Santa Street is located within 300m of the restaurant and spa facilities in Savalen and it's most famous resident is just 100m down the road! The ski slopes and ice rink are also a few minutes walk away. The street is well lit and the wooden buildings create a very friendly atmosphere.

There are 10 apartments measuring 45m2 contained within the cosy wooden buildings each with its own entrance. All of the apartments are well furnished and come extremely well equipped. The apartments have two bedrooms with a total of five sleeping spaces. There is an living room with a TV and dining table as well as a wood burning stove (don't panic there's underfloor heating too) as well as a bathroom and WC. The open plan kitchen is complete with cooker, dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer and coffee machine.

For parties of more than five people, there are also 10 apartments measuring 68m2 apartments spread over the ground floor and the mezzanine there are three bedrooms totalling 9 beds, an open plan kitchen (fully equipped as above) and living room and two bathrooms. Bedlinen and towels are of course included, as is end of week cleaning.

You will have all your meals at Savalen's hotel which serves a wide range of local and international flavours and on your way for dinner you can stop of and have a chat with rudolph or one of Father Christmas' other friends!

Savalen Fell Hotel and Spa: The hotel started life as a mountain lodge but over the past 45 years the Hektoen family have transformed it into a modern hotel with spa facilities. The hotel remains family run and has earned a glowing reputation with its many repeat clients. There are 64 standard rooms with double or twin beds all of which have an en-suite shower and WC, a seating area with table and chairs, TV, telephone and wardrobe.

The hotel restaurant seats 140 and serves a gret mix of local and more international dishes to suit all tastes. There are also many large open areas where guests can relax and enjoy their surroundings including a large area near the reception with wireless internet. The hotel's bar is also a great place for the adults to unwind after a day of excitement.

The 'piece de resistance' at Savalen is the aqua well being centre and spa. There is a swimming pool, massage seats, showers, water jet beds and waterfall, 2 jacuzzis, steam grotto, sauna and scottish shower ( for the very brave!) and treatment rooms for fabulous massages and facials.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Flights, arrivals and transfers. On arrival at Oslo you will be met by one of Santa’s elves who will take you to your transfer vehicle. Once your on your way, we will play a family Christmas video or DVD to keep everybody happy during the transfer to Savalen. On arrival at Salaven you’ll be shown your apartment on Santa Street and find your cold weather clothing waiting for you in the bedrooms. You can keep this gear for your entire stay. When you are ready to brave the winter cold then it’s time to make your way to the restaurant for an introductory meeting and dinner.
Day 2:Santa's House and winter olympics. There’s no point in keeping the kids (young and old) waiting so this morning you’ll walk along the street to Santa’s House. In his workshop where wishes are turned into presents, Santa will tell everybody a fairy tale before taking the children to meet and feed his animals including Rudolf the reindeer, a llama, pigs and miniature ponies. We can’t stress this enough: This is not a "stopwatch Santa experience". Each family gets a private audience with Santa lasting a minimum of ten minutes and you are welcome to stay at his house and workshop all morning. After lunch we’ve laid on our very own winter olympics a fun "competition" using a combination of three or four activities from the likes of snowshoeing, kick sledding, triple ski, skating and Santa’s obstacle course. Great family fun in the snow.
Day 3:Snowmobile safari and horse-pulled sleigh ride. This morning you go on a snowmobile safari around the lake. Naturally, you will receive full tuition and a safety briefing prior to setting off. This is an easy-paced safari with two adults per machine and children riding in a sleigh behind the guide’s skidoo. You should have some free time after lunch so why not head for the pool and spa? As the day draws to a close we take you out on a winter sleigh ride. In sleds pulled by horses, our one hour safari is all about Christmas with tinkling bells and torches.
Day 4:Husky safari and ice fishing. This morning’s activity is yet another huge family favourite. There will be plenty of time to pet the excited and eager dogs before you set off on a 5km husky safari. Along the way you’ll get the chance to try some ice fishing with the help of an instructor. There’s some more free time after lunch to take advantage of Savalen’s many active facilities. Don’t forget the ski slopes! To round off a fabulous family holiday your farewell meal is a traditional Norwegian Christmas dinner followed by a "magical hour" in the candle-lit Aqua Wellbeing Centre.
Day 5:Return airport transfers and departure. Your kids will hate you for this but all good things must come to an end. Sorry!
small group family holiday
This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families and travel in a group of approx. 16 people. The trips are great value and a great way for you and your children to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves. Most adventure kids tend to be aged between 7 and 15, but some are younger (minimum age is usually 5) and some older (perhaps travelling as part of a larger family group). Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip
how this holiday makes a difference
Community
Tourism has become the main source of employment and income in and around Savalen, replacing traditional industries such as farming and forestry. Working within this vital growth industry in rural and remote areas means that we must take a great deal of responsibility; socially, environmentally and economically.

We fully appreciate the impact of tourist visits on local communities and their residents and strive to ensure that we are having a positive effect. We always encourage all of our clients to respect and embrace the lives and culture of local and to respect their traditions. We always encourage cultural exchange by urging clients to learn a few important words in Norwegian such as: hello, goodbye, please, thank you etc.

At Savalen, as with all of our other destinations, we ensure that we use local suppliers where possible, enabling locally owned businesses and the economies in which they work to benefit directly. This reduces the leakage of financial benefits meaning that the tourism income, generated by our presence, stays where it should, in the local economy. We firmly believe in paying a fair price for all the services provided by our suppliers regardless of where they are in the world and this is extremely important when dealing with small rural communities. Through the tourism multiplier effect, this all helps to generate incomes and employment where the drift might otherwise be towards larger employment areas such as towns and cities

Savalen also sources ingredients for its restaurants locally. This includes local products the majority of the meat which is produced organically and locally (reindeer, elk, lamb), potatoes are local, as well as some of the dairy produce. But as this area is in the Norwegian Highland evidently not all can be grown in the region!

Environment
The whole resort including the aqua wellbeing centre and SPA is heated with green energy either hydro electric power or bio power (wood pellets/ wood shavings) thus ensuring minimal pollution of the environment. They have also installed heating control systems throughout the resort which reduces the use of energy to a minimum whilst still keeping guests nice and warm.

The resort was mainly built using sustainable timbers. The units are well insulated to ensure maximum efficiency. The resort has installed LED lights as outdoor lighting. This has a double effect, firstly it gives a 70 – 80 % reduction of used energy and secondly it allows you to enjoy the starry night sky because you can direct the light down in a very good manner. The resort is also now in the first stages of keeping account of our own environmental emissions.

The majority of the activities at Savalen are nature based. Naturally we wish to maintain the natural settings in which we work, not just for the future of our company, but also for future generations. We always make sure that these activities have a minimal negative effect on the surroundings. The trails we use are trails used by the locals for hundreds of years either for farming, hunting or exercise. Our alpine area is used during summer as a grazing area for sheep. During winter the skiing trails are well managed and the snowmobiles we use are as fuel efficient as possible.

Our holidays rely on visiting a beautiful and unspoilt area where you can recharge your batteries. We do appreciate that some may feel that snowmobiles should not be included in such itineraries. However in areas such as Savalen they are a way of life, and are a necessary way of transport for the farmers during winter as the road infrastructure is not extensive. The alternatives to snowmobiles would in most cases be large, gas-guzzling off road vehicles. All snowmobiles are regularly serviced and kept as fuel efficient as possible. The snowmobile service industry is also another vital source of employment in these remote areas. We do however strictly limit the tourist use to the winter roads by the lake.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
