the amazing things you'll be doing
Tailor made holidays in the spectacular Scottish Highlands.

We create bespoke holidays, enabling you to experience and enjoy the best of what lies within the dramatic Highland landscapes; the people, the wildlife, the food and the relaxing pace of life. Ross-shire is one of the last great European wildernesses, full of deserted beaches, dramatic geology, an abundance of wildlife and a thriving local culture.

We organise holidays for groups of 4-10 people. You and your family or friends can choose to do as much or as little as you like, from a wide range of activities lead by local experts. You can also choose the kind of accommodation which will suit your group, from the remote Highland lodges of Wester-Ross, to farm retreats or cottages in the pretty fishing village of Ullapool.

On your arrival you will receive a basket full of local tasty produce and home baking. You can also have daily baskets on your request filled with items for breakfast and lunch. We can also provide delicious suppers ranging from game stew to fish pie followed by fruit tarts, crumbles and puddings.
activities
Activities are all lead by local experts and include; Hill Walking, Kayaking, Wild Food Foraging and Cookery (depending on season), Bird watching Walks, Dry Stone Walling, Yoga, Holistic Massage and Felting Workshops.

Tailor made holidays, Scottish HighlandsYou can focus your week on whichever activities you prefer. If you are interested in yoga then we can arrange sessions with our local teacher Joani, or, if you’d rather, we could provide massage workshops or guide you on gentler walks through special parts of the glen. You may choose to improve your cookery skills, learn to bake bread, or make wild chutney.

Perhaps you want a wilder week, focused on the wildflowers and birds of the area (lead by a local expert). If you are interested in longer hill days, the impressive Munro An Teallach is nearby, as is the Fisherfield Forest containing some of the most remote mountains in the Ross-shire. You can visit local bothies and you may decide to camp wild, foraging for edible foods as you go! Whatever you want to do, if it’s possible, then we will endeavour to arrange it!

Ullapool lies one hour North West of Inverness; we can arrange transfers to and from the airport or train station on request, and transport and a driver for the week if required.

Below is an example itinerary. We can tailor make your holiday the way you would like it and days will vary according to your preferences, fitness and the weather! This itinerary is only an example and all activities can be extended to create more focused weeks.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:You will be greeted at your accommodation with a basket full of edible goodies and a delicious supper.
Day 2:You may decide to spend the first few days walking. If so, then after breakfast you’ll meet our local walking and mountain guide Angela and discuss where you’d like to go and how energetic everyone is feeling. Maybe we’ll ascend a nearby mountain such as Stac Polaidh, which takes about three hours and has breath-taking views. Afterwards we could continue to Achiltibuie and walk along stunning wild beaches. Along the way you could learn about the wildlife and plants of the region; including golden eagles, peregrine falcons and plenty of deer! When you return to your accommodation you’ll find a fish pie waiting for you in the oven and an apple tart on the side.
Day 3:Head North to Sutherland and Sandwood bay, taking in the dramatic changes as we enter Sutherland’s primeval-feeling landscapes. We will pass through Assynt’s Internationally renowned Geopark, which contains the oldest rock formations in Europe, which are amongst the oldest in the world. We will walk from Sheigra along the cliff-top path to Sandwood bay, one of the most beautiful stretches of beach in Scotland and a UNESCO World Heritage site. We’d have a picnic lunch on the beach and do a little beach cleaning before we take an inshore route back to Sheigra. The total walking time would be about 5 hours. On the way back you may want stop in Ullapool for dinner and a local music session in one of the bars. Return home to find a basket full of homemade bread, cakes, quiches, eggs and other local produce for breakfast and lunches.
Day 4:If the group would like a gentler day we can give you local walking routes. In the afternoon perhaps the creative amongst you will be interested in a felting workshop run by Rosie, learn how to make, scarves, bags and hats from felted wool, it’s easy, relaxing and great to take home with you!
Day 5:You may want to spend the next day kayaking with our local instructor, Julianne. Spend the day on Loch Broom, learning basic skills in the morning, have a picnic at Leckmelm Farm and then continue further afield in the afternoon. Return to your accommodation to find a game stew waiting for you in the oven. After a day’s kayaking you may need an evening holistic massage from Rosie!
Day 6:If you are interested in learning how to dry stone wall, you can spend the day with James our local waller, who has worked all over Ross-shire. James will teach you basic skills and have you walling in no time! (Walling can be extended to two or three days).
Day 7:On your last day you may be interested in learning about the natural history and archaeology of the area. You can go wild food foraging with Rosie in the morning on Leckmelm Estate, discovering edible wild foods and stopping for a wild lunch. In the afternoon you can take an archaeological and historical walk around the estate with Alex our local archaeologist. In the evening return to your accommodation to a wild feast waiting for you!
Day 8:Depart for Inverness after breakfast.
best time to go
The Highlands are beautiful at all times of year. However, if you are primarily interested in walking then I would recommend coming in the spring, late summer and autumn. The West coast is well known for its midges and you should be well aware that July and August is their favourite time! It is still very possible to have a good holiday, but be prepared for them.
travellers' tales
Excellent, my 10 year old daughter thought it was the best holiday she had ever had.  (more)
travelling with a local operator
This holiday is operated by a company based in the holiday destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. They will be able to tailor make your holiday to suit your requirements not only concerning the dates of travel but also typically the standard of accommodation, and thus price. It is rare for local operators to be able to help with the booking of your flights.
how this holiday makes a difference
Everything we do is aimed at making a positive impact on the people who stay with us and on the people, places and communities that we introduce them to.

Environment
We believe passionately in protecting our local environment. We source local produce to cut down on food miles, our fish and seafood generally comes straight out of the Minch and our organic meat and vegetables from the farmland around us.

We re-use and recycle all that we can, from paper in the office to fishing rope washed up on the beach. We compost all our paper and food waste. We reduce our waste by buying direct from the supplier; much of our food is never packaged. We carbon off-set our journeys while you are with us and encourage you to do the same with your journeys up to us. We use the C-change Trust, a charity which plants trees in Britain. We cut down on our energy use wherever possible and encourage you to do the same. Our accommodation varies, from lodges supplied with their own hydroelectric schemes, to farm cottages with modern under floor heating systems which cut down on energy use. All our accommodation has open fires and wood burners stoves or ranges. Fire wood comes from local woods and we never use coal as it is toxic, unsustainable and comes from the other side of the world. We use green cleaning products and never use bleach.

We are very aware of the natural unspoilt beauty of the area and endeavour to help keep it that way. On visits to the beach we carry a few bags so we can do a stint beach cleaning before leaving. We encourage clients to adopt the responsible tourist’s mantra of; “leave only foot prints, take only photographs”.

Community
We are committed to using local services wherever possible, sourcing locally for all our accommodation and transport, for virtually all the food we serve and most of the experts that we use.

We generate employment and revenue for local people and businesses including organic farmers, market stall holders, fishermen, artists, craftsmen, mountain guides, taxi drivers, cafes, restaurants and shops.

Ross-shire is a sparsely populated area dominated by massive tract of mountainous wilderness. Our business helps to support and expand a regional network of like-minded individuals. We help to encourage cohesion and skill-sharing amongst craft practitioners and our other specialists.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
