the amazing things you'll be doing
Brazil is a massive and diverse country and has so much to offer the visitor, from pristine beaches to jungles full of flora and fauna. The biodiversity is very rich in Brazil and this itinerary takes in both the world’s largest jungle and the world’s largest swamp.
You will arrive in Rio and have time to visit this fascinating and beautiful city on a tour with a knowledgeable local guide who will explain about life in this magical city and take you to see the breathtaking sights such as Sugarloaf Mountain and Corcovado. A BBQ lunch is included in a traditional restaurant. Whilst in Rio, you will also visit some “favelas” or shanty towns to see how the locals live there.
A couple of internal flights will take you to the Pantanal which is an area of swampy wetland about half the size of France. It is one of Brazil's wildest and least explored regions and wildlife viewing here is the best in Brazil. The Pantanal has the greatest concentration of fauna in the New World and allows you to see animals in their natural environment. There are 650 bird species in the Pantanal and over 260 species of fish. Many excursions are done by canoe, on foot or on horseback.
A further couple of internal flights to Manaus in the Amazon takes you on your way to the Uakari Lodge which is a floating lodge located on the Rio Solimoes. The lodge itself is quite simple, however the wildlife in the surrounding area is abundant. The location of the lodge has been carefully chosen: it is in a bend in the river with ample opportunities for observing wildlife without leaving the premises. Thanks to the conservation efforts which began in 1983, the Mamirauá Reserve in which the lodge is located has become a wildlife refuge.
The wildlife you can expect to see around the lodge are endemic species like the white uakari monkey and the black headed squirrel monkey. The reserve is also home to other species like the Amazon pink river dolphin, the red howler monkey, the scarlet-macaw and the black cayman. Other incredible creatures found nearby include the harpy eagle, the jaguar and the umbrella bird.

best time to go
Brazil can be visited all year round and in general the weather is excellent. However, the best time of year to go to the Pantanal is between May and September as it is the dry season so the mammals, reptiles and birds are around the water sources and so are easier to spot. Going in the dry season also means that it is cooler and there are less mosquitoes than in the wet season. This is also a great time of year to go to the Amazon as the nights are cooler and the skies are star-filled. It is an excellent period for birdwatching and spotting land mammals and butterflies because the forest gets drier, especially from July until late October.day-by-day itinerary

Environment:
The Pantanal has been declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and the Jaguar Ecological Reserve is located within this area. The Jaguar Ecological Reserve offers a unique glimpse into the local Pantaneiro culture, as well as the opportunity to spot and learn about plenty of local flora and fauna. The Jaguar Ecological Reserve prides itself on the fact that it only employs local Pantaneiros, whose knowledge of the region is very extensive. By visiting the Reserve you will directly contribute to a community-based conservation project aimed at protecting the biodiversity and culture of one of the largest wetlands in the world. The Uakari lodge - was designed for minimum environmental impact. The lodge's power comes from solar panels and there is a sewage filtration system is place. The lodge is located inside the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve which is the largest Brazilian protected area devoted to the conservation of flooded forests and is an ecosystem which holds much biodiversity and many rare species. There are regular presentations from biologists. Community: A visit to the favelas in Rio will give you a fantastic opportunity to integrate with the locals and see their way of life. The Uakari lodge - The lodge is owned and run by a local indigenous community and you get to see real Amazon life such as the local people living by the river, which makes for a really authentic experience. Local food is served such as rice & beans, a vegetarian option, meat & fish options. It was the first Brazilian conservation unit to give local people a major share of responsibility for the management of its natural resources. The lodge is a perfect place to experience nature and interact with local people. The ecotourism programme was developed as a means for funding the Mamirauá Project and providing an alternative source of income for local communities, so a stay here is directly benefiting the local community and helping towards the conservation of the rainforest. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
