the amazing things you'll be doing
This itinerary takes you from the bustling capital of Delhi in the plains up into the different world of the tranquil foothills of the Himalaya. It gives you an insight into India's diversity; you have the chance to explore the narrow streets of Old Delhi, the opportunity to see the elusive tiger in Corbett, before heading up to one of the most untouched areas of Himalayan foothills.

On arrival in Delhi you will have a good introductory tour of Delhi. In the foothills you will see the diversity of the beautiful Kumaon region of Uttarkhand which is very rural, while in Corbett you will be surrounded by well maintained forestry, home to a healthy population of tigers and other wildlife. This was the first park to open in response to the declining tiger numbers and has had great success. The wildlife opportunities are endless and most exciting of all is the chance to take an elephant safari with a mahout and guide who will talk you through all you see around you.

Moving further into the foothills you will find yourself surrounded by mesmerising terraced farm lands, inquisitive people and in the distance you have the stunning snow-capped peaks. It is so far removed from the day to day life of the bustling cities; it makes for a refreshing change. In the hills you will be walking from village to village while accompanied by an informative guide who knows the region extremely well and is able to tell you all there is to know. You will then continue further into the unknown to a small luxury retreat where you will revel in the peace and tranquillity, where they have lovely walking and sumptuous food.
best time to go
From mid September through to December you will experience wonderful clear skies and exceptional mountain views. From December temperatures will gradually drop and through to January and early February the evenings will be chilly. In the beginning of March temperatures begin to increase and become lovely and warm verging on hot by the end of April and May. Rhodedendrons will appear for a short period in March/April.

how this holiday makes a difference
Environment:
The main components of this itinerary are Corbett National Park and the Kumaon Hills both of which are focused on responsible tourism and supporting the local environment and community. The staff recruited from the local town of Ramnagar are aware of conservation issues and how this can fit in with the needs of clients. Their encouragement comes through a share in the profits so it is in everyone's best interests to endorse responsible practices. The owner here works very closely with wildlife conservation projects in the area and has done for years, with the primary concern in this area being the conservation of tiger habitats, which has benefited all the wildlife as a result.

Leti - The luxury retreat is built to fit in with the local environment. Energy is provided through solar panels and a small generator, while evening light comes from candles, the fire and solar lamps. Leti really is a very responsible project and combined with the village walks it is a hugely responsible and extremely beneficial venture for all involved.

Community:
During your time at Corbett you will be staying in a fairly new property which has been well designed to fit in with its surroundings, with the buildings made of local materials and constructed by local people. During your time here you will eat fruit and vegetables grown on the property.

In the Kumaon Hills - you will be spending the first three nights in different village houses of which there are only three, each sleeping four people. These were once used by local families and have since been leased for our use, and although they have been decorated and furnished to suit western needs, no physical changes have been made and visitors will still experience the true Kumaon Hills way of life. The families are around in some houses during the evenings so clients and families can interact with one another. During time on the walks visitors will have minimal impact on the environment, with concrete water channels or old forestry roads often used as paths. Nothing has been created for visitors other than the opportunity to explore this wonderful hidden part of the country. Clients can make donations to a central pot which is shared between the houses and their families, the local community and for general maintenance of the area.

Leti - Not only has the property been designed to have minimum impact on the surroundings, it has also been constructed out of local materials and by local craftsmen. Any food that is not grown on site is bought locally and walked in by local porters and the number of other employees recruited has had a great benefit on the local community and economy.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
