introduction to Kerala cultural tours

There is so much to discover about Kerala – the legendary backwaters, the Cardamom hills where most of the world’s spices come from and the endless stretches of some of the best beaches in India. Here the local farmers and communities strive to make a living using century old techniques in farming and their traditional arts. Our journey and aim is to get into the lives of these people and understand the ethos of life among these communities. Tourism is a mass employer in Kerala and a visit always enriches both the visitor as well as the local population.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Your arrival in Kochi. Discover the history and arts of Fort Kochi while we stay at the historically significant heritage hotel Brunton Boatyard.
Day 2-3:We leave for Thekkady – to the forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve. Here we have an opportunity to partake in a myriad of programmes in the company of guides who are from the tribal villages and members of the local communities, participating in an innovative programme of inclusive forest management – a great success in conservation activities of this massive tiger sanctuary. Stay at the eco resort Spice Village.
Day 4-5:The backwaters hold a great charm to the visitors with its vast waterways and canals with people engaged in traditional activities like fishing, duck rearing and shell collection. Our aim during this stay would be to be a part of this life while we kayak through the waterways, cycle through these lovely villages or just walk through the myriad coconut plantations. Local communities to a large extend also depend on tourism to supplement their income from their traditional jobs. Stay at the magnificent environmentally friendly Coconut Lagoon.
Day 6-7:We will transfer to Marari Beach where we can interact with the local fishermen, go on walks or cycle through the villages, drop in to see the local school and visit the traditional coir making activity. Stay will be at the beautifully crafted Marari Beach Resort

traveller reviews for Kerala cultural tours

Excellent and truly memorable... We had a trek up into the hills on the back of a massive bull elephant, then watched a display of his strength moving logs, then had the enormous privilege of scrubbing him down afterwards. (more)
how this holiday makes a difference
Environment
The essence of this trip is being with the local communities and understanding how livelihoods are made in different areas of Kerala - be it coir making in households mostly by women or understanding farming techniques in the spice plantations which supply most of the world’s spices. We also encourage moving around on cycles to best save on precious fuel and to get a ring side view of life in the villages.

This trip also helps in raising awareness about the unique bio-diversity of the Western Ghats mountain ranges which is one of the 34 biodiversity ‘Hot Spots’ of the earth. The Cardamom Hills are facing threats like never before and this trip will help understand local problems and what are being done to reduce the impact of modernisation.

The places you will be staying are famed for their eco processes and commitment, having won awards and accolades for best eco tourism and conservation practices. This can also be a chance to learn how to reuse and recycle waste water and hotel waste to usable water and fertilizer for the farms and plants. The effective use of energy saving practices also is in focus at all these places.

Eco Initiatives by the hotels in this itinerary:
  • Recycling The water is recycled since water shortage is endemic to these areas where most of these resorts are. The waste water is re-cycled & the waste from the kitchens is converted into compost & used as fertilizer for the gardens and growing vegetables.
  • Local Procurement One of the most enduring principles of these hotels is to "eat local", thus helping local communities to earn a decent living by selling local produce instead of depending on big retail chains. Getting involved in communal activities: The destinations are run like little village communities, and there's always some things to do at the organic farms and paddy fields. There is also more involvement with the local communities - for example, the tribal community at Periyar have been encouraged to grow organic pepper & this hotel helps them market it at a higher price overseas.

    Community
Our drivers are all locally hired and for whom this is the sole livelihood. The guides are also from local communities and tribal population thus helping to plough back substantial amount back into the local communities.

The forest programmes at Periyar and local visits to small businesses in other places, which are part of this tour, directly impacts the livelihood of involved persons.

The trip into the tiger reserve is always accompanied by members of the local communities & a substantial portion of the income goes to these members of the local communities.

The travel is slowed down to a crawl & tourism over a period has become a major source of income and hence livelihood depends on more travelers. Most activities like cycling, village walks or visit to farms, while staying at these hotels, are directly done by members of the local communities.
  • Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
