introduction to Laos small group holiday

Kuang Si Experience the laid-back river lifestyle, friendly people and colonial charm of Laos on this 8-day journey. We begin in the far north of Thailand, in Chiang Rai. From here we enter Laos and travel by slow boat down the mighty Mekong to the outpost of Pakbeng and onto beautiful Luang Prabang. The religious centre of this little-visited country is one of Asia’s true highlights – peaceful temples, lush mountains and fabric-filled markets await. We finish our journey in Laos’ appealing capital, Vientiane.

Laos is a magical nation where you will meet devout monks and hilltribe farmers, enjoy lush tropical backgrounds and thundering waterfalls, and a night market full of fabrics, handicrafts and delicious local snacks. Travelling down the mighty Mekong on a private boat is a truly unique experience.

Day 1-2:Chiang Rai & Pakbeng Your journey begins in Chiang Rai, in the heart of the mystical Golden Triangle region. Join your group and tour leader for a welcome briefing and dinner and prepare for your Mekong boat journey. The next morning, cross the border into Laos, the ‘Land of a Million Elephants’. We travel slowly down the Mekong River, witnessing traditional rural scenes, rustic villages and stunning scenery. You’ll find it hard to think of a time you’ve been more relaxed! Stay overnight in the old trading post of Pakbeng. Hotels: Wiang Inn, Phetsokxai (lodge)
Day 3-5:Luang Prabang We board our boat and continue on to the jewel in Laos’ crown, Luang Prabang. Along the way we visit a remote hilltribe village and witness the hundreds of Buddha effigies tucked into the cliffs at Pak Ou Caves. In beautiful Luang Prabang, we will gain an insight into the local culture as we enter ornate monasteries, visit the interesting Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, and chat with the local monks. Enjoy a fun Lao cooking class at the riverside Tamarind Restaurant – dedicated to preserving the unique aspects of delicious Lao cuisine – and visit stunning Kuang Si Falls. We will also rise early to witness the ancient ritual of local monks collecting alms at dawn, and soak up the town’s relaxed atmosphere with a game of petanque. Hotel: Sala Prabang (lodge)
Day 6-8:Vientiane Fly to Vientiane, which retains an old world charm that is becoming increasingly rare in Asia. Here we visit the golden-spired That Luang, Wat Sisaket and the Patuxai Monument – Laos’ own Arc de Triomphe. Visit the interactive COPE centre and gain a valuable insight into the problems UXO’s (unexploded mines, bombs etc) have caused in this peaceful land and what this fantastic organisation is doing to help. Late afternoon is the ideal time to reflect on your journey with a sunset drink by the Mekong. Join your group and tour leader for a final Lao meal before your ‘Laos Experience’ ends with an airport transfer on day 8. Hotel Novotel Vientiane
    small group adventure holiday
These small group journeys have a maximum of 15 like-minded travellers which ensures that all travellers have an amazing overall experience with the destination and that they enjoy the flexibility that comes with the small group dynamic. On this trip you will stay at boutique accommodation with character. Our numbers are discreet enough for us to interact with local families in their homes and meet people in markets, bazaars and temples – something that’s just not possible when you arrive as part of a large tour group. Along with our unique combination of Western tour leader and local English-speaking guide this will ensure an unforgettable travel experience.
how this holiday makes a difference
    Environment
We believe that travel should entail an exchange of knowledge and perspectives, a sharing of wealth, and a genuine appreciation of Laos’s beautiful natural environment. This philosophy underpins the heart and soul of our style of travel. We recognise that poorly planned itineraries or poorly informed tourists contribute less to cross-cultural understanding and less to the livelihoods of local people.

Experience the laid-back river lifestyle and colonial charm of Laos on this 8 day journey. Commencing in northern Thailand we cross the border into Laos to board our slowboat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang where we witness traditional rural scenes and rustic villages. In the World Heritage town of Luang Prabang our low impact walking tour takes us to some of the town’s 32 wats and monasteries, and past rows of atmospheric French colonial architecture. During time with a Buddhist monk we learn about the fascinating Buddhist religion, and in the evening of day five we take part in a cooking class which aims to promote an awareness of traditional Lao food.

    Community
From Luang Prabang we also travel to the picturesque Kuang Si waterfalls, one of the many beautiful waterfalls near Luang Prabang, and en route we spend time at the small Arts and Ethnology Centre to gain an insight into the lifestyles of some of the 34 ethnic groups which make up the population of Laos. This non-profit organisation is dedicated to the preservation of Laos’ ethnic minorities.

At the end of your journey in riverside Vientiane, home to elegant Buddhist monasteries, you visit COPE (Cooperative Orthotic Prosthetic Enterprise). This centre is dedicated to providing prosthetic limbs to Laotian people, many whom have been victims of UXO’s left behind from the Vietnam and Indochina conflicts. The centre is both interactive and informative, whilst not focusing on the dark side of UXO issues you are sure to learn something from a visit to this outstanding organisation. On this journey our local guides are trained to share their knowledge of cultural and other local issues in a balanced, informative way. They will share real experiences from their own lives and insights into their family life, influences and beliefs. This is what motivates our guides; not shopping commissions. A western tour leader will also accompany your small group - we believe that this pairing with a local guide provides a balanced and informed perspective on the culture of a country and of the region of Asia. In your free time you will be encouraged to make a donation to the infant book publisher ‘Big Brother Mouse’, which Travel Indochina supports, and you will also be encouraged to read our ‘Tread Lightly’ booklet, distributed on arrival in the ‘Land of a Million Elephants.’

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
