the amazing things you'll be doing
Accompanied wine and gastronomy breaks for those who enjoy drinking and eating for fun - without the snobbery! Guided visits, exclusive tastings with the growers and gourmet foods – sample some of the finest red, white and sparkling Loire Valley wines. Share with us great food, good company and fun times.
The Loire Valley is France's 3rd largest wine region, producing some of the best wines in France - Saumur, Chinon, Vouvray and Bourgueil. Our tours are relaxed, convivial with plenty of tastings, meeting the winegrowers and enjoying the sights sounds and tastes of the valley.
All tours are escorted with a maximum of 6 people per trip to ensure that you get personal attention. Your guide is knowledgeable, bi-lingual and has lived here for several years. All the winegrowers we visit are known personally to us (many are our friends), ensuring us of a warm welcome wherever we go.
Our tours are designed for people who enjoy food and wine for pleasure and want to learn more. You won’t be spending lots of time travelling, as in addition to the wines of St Nicolas produced on the doorstep, we are less than 20 minutes drive away from the other main local wine appellations.
You will stay right in the vineyards – your accommodation is a former winegrowers property with great views over the valley and the vines. Your tour will take you past, and give you time to visit, historic towns and chateaux as well as the majestic Loire itself. You won’t just be visiting a couple of local growers – every day is planned out – making sure that we do exactly what we promise...and quite often more!

day-by-day itinerary
| Day 1: | The tour will begin in the afternoon on your arrival day. On arrival we will ensure you are settled into your room as quickly as possible, so we have time to stroll to a local wine grower that afternoon/early evening, before returning to base for a home cooked, four course evening meal, naturally served with a selection of local wines. |
| Day 2: | After a good breakfast - plenty of choice including fresh croissants and bread - you will set off for your first visit of the day. We typically travel across the Loire to the medieval town of Chinon, with a first tasting at a local grower en-route. In Chinon itself you will have time to visit the town, including the animated wine museum and the hilltop chateau, before breaking for a well-earned lunch. In the afternoon, we head east through the vineyards to one of the nearby villages, for our second vineyard tour and tasting before returning to the market town of Bourgueil. Here we will walk to a local producer for our final tour and tasting of the day, enabling you to compare the Chinon and Bourgueil appellations. This evening we will transport you to our local gourmet restaurant, where you can enjoy a choice of mouthwatering menus, along with excellent attentive hospitality and an extensive local wine list. |
| Day 3: | After another hearty breakfast, we leave for Saumur, stopping on the way to sample the sparkling wines that the town is renowned for. Our visit includes an informative guided tour of the caves, explaining the differences in the methods of production. We then move into Saumur itself, where you will have time to explore the town, famous for its château and military riding school, and take lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit the Saumur Champigny region, which produces high-quality red wines and our winegrower has fascinating troglodyte caves in which you will taste his produce. For your final evening, we will take you to a second gourmet restaurant to enjoy another delicious evening meal. |
| Day 4: | On your last morning, we will serve you a final breakfast before you head off for home or an onward journey. |
Extra day: For the 5 day tour, we will include visits to the above wine appellations. In addition, on your 'extra' day, we will visit the Montlouis/Vouvray vineyards as well as the magnificent Chenonceaux chateau. We will also transport you to a local gourmet restaurant for this evening's meal.
how this holiday makes a difference
|
We are a small family run business, which has been operating since 2006 and our principal aim is to provide quality tours in the Loire Valley to meet the needs of our customers.
Environment Our restored building has a number of features which we have installed which significantly reduce our energy consumption, including the installation of double glazing and insulation throughout which exceeds the French requirements. This often provides the springboard to discuss with guests how we can all conserve energy, particularly in an stone building where you have 60cm thick walls. Our drainage system is standalone and we have approval to drain the filtered water into the rain water drains as it is classed as “clean”. To ensure the quality of water we do use only bio-friendly detergents and minimise use of these by not changing sheets and towels daily We recycle plastics, glass, paper, cartons and compost. We insist that our guests to do the same and so provide you with appropriate means to do this. We use low wattage lights wherever possible, recycle rain water for the garden and are currently researching the use of solar heating both for the production of hot water and also for pool heating. We recommend travel to us by train, a much more eco-friendly solution over renting cars, or air transport to minimize the Co2 emission by capita. We use locally owned and run businesses for all of our external requirements. These include all our suppliers and the places that we visit during our tours and for meals and shopping. Community Our accommodation is here in our property, which we restored and rebuilt with the help of local artisans – using local suppliers and local materials wherever possible, such as the tuffeau stone which is common to this region. We use our own 7 seater transport, which reduces the impact on the environment as groups can travel together in one vehicle. We have established a friendly network of professionals and contacts including many wine growers who are also firm believers of sustainable development, many of whom now grow grapes organically and are looking at alternative ways to ensure good harvests each year, in preference to pesticides and chemical treatments. For the meals we serve here – again with local produce depending on the season being prevalent – as we are in the heart of the “Jardin de France” we use local vegetables and fruits wherever possible. We believe that over a meal and/or a drink is also the ideal time to discuss ways in which we can all help prolong the life of the planet which we share. As well as visiting the ‘headline’ chateaux in the area, we also provide the opportunity to see some of the lesser known sites – often run by individuals with a passion for their local heritage. This greatly enriches your experience (you learn about the ‘real’ locals and their past) as well as helping these important sites economically. In summary, we believe we are operating an environmentally friendly holiday, with a high level of interaction in the local community, benefiting our economy. Of course, anything can be made better and we are striving to do so – guest who think like us are most welcome. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
