introduction to Kilimanjaro summit walking holidays

Kilimanjaro
Each of the trips below includes a trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. You don't have to be a mountaineer or experienced trekker to reach the summit - anybody with a good level of fitness and plenty of determination stands a chance of success! Each itinerary takes you to the summit by dawn, giving you the opportunity to capture the breath-taking scenes before you.

Treks 1-5 are available on any day, for any number of people. If you do not wish to join others and prefer to trek privately please let us know at the time of booking. There is no extra charge for this. If you are happy to join others on trek we try to keep the group sizes to between 5-7 people where possible.

Treks 6-8 are group itineraries, which means that you will be joined by fellow travellers.

Our prices include transfers to and from Kilimanjaro airport and a night in the Springlands hotel before and after your trek. Price also includes meals on the mountain (and safari), breakfast in the hotel & ALL park fees (This does not include tips for the staff) International flights are NOT included but can be arranged for an additional cost.
our Kilimanjaro treks
Trek 1:Marangu route (8 days) from US $1192: 6 Day Trek (fully porter supported) + 2 nights hotel B&B
This is the easiest route to the summit of Kilimanjaro, sometimes called the Coca-Cola Route. Accommodation on the mountain is in comfortable huts. This is a tough walking trip but within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas. An extra day for acclimatisation to the altitude is recommended at Horombo from where there are various walks to enjoy.
Trek 2:Machame route (9 days) from $1662: 7 Day Trek (fully porter supported) + 2 nights hotel B&B
Sometimes called the Whisky Route. This is a popular route up steep paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading through the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the Southern Icefields to join the Barafu Route to the summit. The Mweka Route is used for the descent. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents that the porters will pitch for you. This is a steep, tough trek within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas.
Trek 3:Rongai route (9 days) from US $1662 (plus $120 per group vehicle surcharge): 7 Day Trek (fully porter supported) + 2 nights hotel B&B
This remote and less frequently used route is the second easiest route to Kilimanjaro. The approach to the mountain is from the less-forested north side and the descent is by the Marangu Route. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents (even on descent) that the porters will pitch for you. This is a steep, tough trek within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas.
Trek 4:Umbwe route (8 days) from US $1467: 6 Day Trek (fully porter supported) + 2 nights hotel B&B
This route is the hardest but most spectacular and direct way to reach Uhuru Peak. It follows a forested ridge to the moorlands, then traverses below the Southern Icefields to reach the Barafu Route which is followed to the summit. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents that the porters will pitch for you. This is a steep, tough and in places slightly exposed trek within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas. An extra day can be added to our itinerary to explore or relax along the route
Trek 5:Lemosho route (10 days) from US $1857 (plus $120 per group vehicle surcharge): 8 Day Trek (fully porter supported) + 2 nights hotel B&B
This is the longest and most remote route to Kilimanjaro. After beautiful forests and moorlands it crosses the Shira Plateau to meet up with the Machame Route. Groups may be accompanied on the first day by an armed ranger as the forests around the Lemosho Glades are rich in buffalo, elephant and other game. Descent is by the Mweka Route. A party wishing to ascend slowly can comfortably take 8 days, however a strong group could make it in 7 days. Accommodation on the mountain is in tents that the porters will pitch for you. This is a steep, tough trek within the limits of a fit individual used to walking in mountain areas.

how this holiday makes a difference
Environment
Our own staff in the field are expected to run trips in as sustainable a manner as possible. For example; not only do they insist on removing their own rubbish but they will when practicable clean up after other more selfish groups. Our aim is always to leave campsites in a better state than we have found them.
Our staff ensure our clients are given clear guidance on dealing with litter, toilet issues, on prevention of water pollution, firewood usage and personal hygiene.

It is tourism that not only keeps the Tanzanian economy going but also helps preserve the magnificent environment. Income from tourism allows the strict management plans to be implemented without which wildlife would be wiped out and forests cut down. Visitors help protect the environment just by going.
With few other resources it is not surprising that tourism is critical to the countries economy. Luckily it has been developed carefully balancing the needs to preserve the magnificent environments with the need to develop good facilities for visitors and to allow local tribes to maintain as far as possible their preferred lifestyles. Park entry fees account for a substantial amount of the fees that we charge for our trips! Fee money goes to the government who then hands it out to different organisations.

Community
Traditionally local communities are extremely poor. Your visit will indirectly help many families and provide money for the clothing, feeding and schooling of many children. It is logical to use local people to work within the tourist industry. The staff that you meet on our trips are all from local communities. Working with tourists has many benefits to them - their wages are higher than those normally received in these areas and they have the opportunity to earn tips. Our tipping policy recommends fairly substantial tips. This allows you to be directly involved and they receive money immediately. Porters, cooks and guides on Kilimanjaro work particularly hard and we have created a Porter and Guides Association which gives them clear guidelines as to what is expected of them and what in turn they should expect. In particular we insist they are not given more than 15kg loads to carry, that they eat well, are well-clothed and can sleep in comfort. You will generally find they have much more energy on the mountains than you do at the end of what seems to you as a particularly hard day. This to a large extent is related to their superb acclimatization.

In addition to your interaction with our staff we encourage you to be involved and visit a variety of projects at our different locations such as farms, orphanages, schools and villages. Visitors are also encouraged to purchase local produce, however they are asked to avoid souvenirs made from endangered indigenous woods (such as ebony & bamboo) or encourages the destruction of flora and fauna (such as ivory, corals and large shells).

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
