the amazing things you'll be doing
This is a unique opportunity for any child aged 8 - 18, who can swim 50m confidently and unaided, to experience 2 - 5 full days surfing at a variety of the best spots in Cornwall, with trusted, fully qualified professional coaches who are there to take care of their every requirement.
On our award-winning, low impact, sustainable Surfing Experiences we offer high quality, surf coaching and safe accommodation. All of our surf coaches are screened by the Criminal Records Bureau. The Children will experience real surfing, in different locations (conditions permitting) in a relaxed, un-pressured environment. In addition we have partnered with a local, sustainable environmental project, who offer education programmes, courses and events at a traditional smallholding in an idyllic location near Penzance, Cornwall, with a menagerie of animals, beautiful views towards Mount’s Bay, its own holy well, and fantastic walks available from the doorstep.
The combination of an individual’s inexperience of surfing and (often) the ocean, make for a skill-learning and empowering experience. After the earned rush of being carried to the shore by a wave, firstly lying down and then standing up, individuals feel exhilarated, challenged and rewarded; there is also fun watching and discussing the development of the student-team as surfers - again helping to break down existing barriers; enhance inter-personal relationships; raise self awareness and promote collective responsibility.
The compound effect of this profound and addictive physiological Surf Experience naturally unites any team of students quickly and effectively. With our unique approach we have successfully and professionally facilitated the ultimate Sustainable School Surf Experience whilst making it accessible, fun, safe, empowering and rewarding by drawing out the spirit and true potential of the individual.
What’s included:
Optional extra: DVD of the trip (£200)
Evening plans can include: Nocturnal wonder- Late afternoon/dusk walk to Carn Euny ancient Iron Age village - with wild food foraging, storytelling and wildlife spotting. "Bushcraft" style sessions: Shelter building, fire making and cooking on camp fire, hedgerow herbalism - making ointments and potions out of hedgerow plants, traditional skills: Basket making, pole lathing, blacksmithing and charcoal making, sustainable building techniques - cob, straw bale etc, Storytelling around the camp fire.
Accommodation: Our accommodation options are within easy reach of West Cornwall's premier surfing beaches. There are 2 choices: Yurts and Bell tents sited at an Eco Village – with wood burning showers, compost loos, composting, recycling, home grown food. The second choice is a large converted chapel. Both options are in a rural location. Breakfast is at the accommodation, packed lunches are at the beach and supper is at the accommodation.
Please note: We require 1 full paying teacher / adult per 8 children. They are expected to participate fully with all sessions from beginning to end, which includes assisting with wetsuits, board carrying and taking full responsibility for the group at all times except during the coaching sessions.

Environment
Our mission is to provide unique, accessible and sustainable surfing without compromising on luxury or the environment. Further to this we employed Cornwall Sustainable Tourism’s benchmarking system by trying to make all we do match their tenets of sustainability: Social, Economic and Environmental Sustainability. In April 2006 we became (we think the first) Carbon Neutral Surf School, Surf Vacations Company and Surf Shop in the world. We achieved this by carbon offsetting with a company called C02 Balance. In our office we use recycled paper and envelopes all from sustainable sources, as well as eco friendly cleaning products and Fairtrade tea and coffee. Our desk inbox shelving and folders are all made from recycled material, our self adhesive labels are solvent free, we even have a staple-less stapler and most of our bags are recycled or recyclable. Our electricity is provided by Eco-tricity, we encourage an ambient temperature of 17 degrees or below, low energy bulbs are used where possible and we encourage the turning off of all lights and electrical items when not in use. In our own accommodation we have installed combination boilers which reduce the need to heat and store water. We strongly encourage travel to and from Cornwall by train; more than 50 % of our clients reach us this way. Community Our staff are all locally recruited and are chosen for their professional attitude and accessible manner. We also care about our local environment, those who work and live here and in our policies we advise groups that we do not tolerate any loud or offensive behaviour. For Breakfast supplies we mostly shop at Co-op and recommend locally produced food sources, local shops, pubs and restaurants. Awards: Cornwall Tourism Awards 2008/09 Triple Winners – Leisure Experience of the Year Gold; Sustainability Award Silver; Winner of Winners. South West Tourism Excellence Awards 2008/09 Tourism Experience of the Year Silver. Surfers Path Best Green Travel Company 2007 and we are also nominated for 2008/09 – results pending. Green Tourism Business Scheme Silver. We realised that working as an island was not going to help achieve true sustainability so we partnered and reached out:

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
