the amazing things you'll be doing
Small group adventure holiday to Patagonia You must visit both the Chilean and Argentinean side of Patagonia, they are different to one another and both are worth travelling through. The border sits on the spine of the Andes and on either side there are turquoise lakes and snow capped volcanoes to the north, temperate rainforest and remote fjords, glaciers and ice fields and the iconic granite peaks of Torres del Paine National Park and the Fitzroy range in Los Glaciares National Park.

Highlights
  • Visit one of Chile’s finest wineries.
  • Choose from a range of outdoor activities in Chile’s lake district – white water rafting, climb Villarica volcano or trek the national park.
  • Visit the traditional, picturesque island of Chiloe.
  • Walk in Torres del Paine National Park, visiting Glacier Grey and the French Valley.
  • Ice trek on the famous Perito Moreno glacier.
  • Trek to the Mount Fitzroy or Cerro Torre in Los Glaciares National Park.
  • Navigate the waters of the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, spotting albatross, cormorants and penguins.
  • Explore the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, taking in an authentic tango show.

Style of travel: We stay in simple hotels and guesthouses with private facilities, transport is a mixture of private and public vehicles and we fly the longer distances.

    A few days to spare?
If you have a few days to spare, we can arrange extensions to the beginning or end of this tour, on a private basis. You may like to visit the Atacama desert or Easter Island before the tour, or fly to Iguazú Falls or visit an Argentinean estancia afterwards. Our experts can advise and help you chose the extension most suitable for you.

Best time to go on our small group adventure holiday to Patagonia: The season for Patagonia is October to April, with the busiest months being January and February. During these months you can expect all seasons in one day, but it is typically warmer than other months of the year with longer daylight hours. However, to go in the winter (June – August) you can expect few other visitors, more wildlife sightings and temperatures only occasionally drop below zero at night.

how this holiday makes a difference
    Community
We work with local guides throughout Patagonia, not only supporting local employment, but our guides are best positioned to teach you about the local flora and fauna, as well as the more disturbing aspects of the local environment, notably the receding glaciers and areas of former deforestation.

On the day trip to the island of Chiloe, we visit a penguin colony, set on islands just offshore. We navigate the islands in zodiacs but do not set foot on the islands where the penguins (and sea otters, steamer ducks etc) are found, in order to protect their natural habitats. Local fishermen operate the zodiacs, a successful and lucrative venture, giving them an alternative to fishing prohibited fish and shellfish, such as abalone. We end the day on Chiloe by visiting a local chilote house, typically that of welcoming Senora Sefora. She invites local musicians to entertain us and she and her family prepare a feast of the local dish, curanto. The warmth of the ‘chilote’ people is touching and it is clear Sefora opens her home to tourism because she enjoys sharing her culture with us, not just for the much needed income that comes with it. This day is often quoted as the highlight of this tour.

On this small group adventure holiday to Patagonia we work with small privately owned ground agents who live in the area, have established RT policies in place, and employ local guides and staff. A number of journeys on this tour use public transport, the hotels are small, individual properties often run by the owners and their families, we eat in local restaurants serving locally grown produce – our style of travel ensures that as many local people as possible benefit by our being there. This tour runs with a maximum of 16 people which helps to minimise the impact on delicate environments.

    Environment
Much of this tour is spent in the national parks of Patagonia. When inside the parks we ask clients to keep all waste with them until back in the nearest town, to walk only on designated paths, and not to pick flowers or disturb the natural resources. Given the purity of the water in Patagonia, we also encourage clients to drink tap water rather than buy bottled water, to avoid excess waste of plastic.

Our guides, and tour leaders, advise how best to minimise our impact whilst travelling in this region and the receding glaciers act as stark reminder of what we can also do back home to minimise the impact of our humankind on the environment.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
