introduction to Guatemala & Belize, tailor made holiday

Guatemala

Antigua is one the world’s finest preserved colonial cities, nestled in a majestic setting beneath three volcanoes- Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. The best way to explore Antigua’s preserved monasteries, churches and plazas is slowly, on foot, through its cobbled streets.

Panajachel and Chichicastenango. After leaving Antigua it’s not long before you’re winding your way up to Lake Atitlan and admiring the panorama across the lowland valley. The views become even more impressive as you reach the lake and clearing clouds reveal breathtaking volcanoes. The landscapes of Guatemala are coloured by the people; in Chichicastenango market on a Sunday and Thursday indigenous communities descend on the town from all over the country wearing bright, hand woven clothes.

Tikal. From Flores airstrip, close to the Belizean border, you’re driven to the vast Mayan City of Tikal where a network of steep skyscraper pyramids pierce the forest canopy. Screaming parakeets and roaring howler monkeys bring the jungle setting of the site to life, making this one of the most atmospheric of all the Mayan cities. Your accommodation is perfectly positioned by the entrance of the park enabling you to visit the ruins before other guests arrive and as many times as you like.

Belize

The Lodge at Chaa Creek is situated in peaceful gardens on the banks of the Macal River. Standards and service are set here and others follow. You’ll stay in smart, comfortable cottages built in the traditional thatched palapa style. Kayak on the river, visit the blue Morpho butterfly farm on site or enjoy spa treatments followed by a dip in the recently built pool.

Victoria House is only a short ride in a golf cart away from the laid back Caribbean town of San Pedro where red snapper and lobster are common fare on the local menus. The plantation style property is one of the best properties in Belize and it also boasts the best dive shop on the island- offering some of the best diving and snorkelling on the longest reef in the western hemisphere.

Best time to go: The best time to go on our Guatemala & Belize, tailor made holiday is between November and May as this is the dry season in Belize. Although the rainy season in Guatemala and Belize is from June to October, weather is hot and tropical in low lying jungle areas such as Tikal and cooler on the coast. The Guatemalan highlands are cooler all year round but they tend to get less rain.

how this holiday makes a difference
Community
In Antigua we support the charity Safe Passage which opened its doors in 1999 to help educate the children who work on the Guatemala City rubbish dump. The organisation represents a refuge from a life marked by extreme poverty and dangerous conditions. In Antigua, the hotel Posada Lazos Fuertes give their profits back to the charity. We recommend this hotel for clients who are keen to stay in a comfortable, yet simple hotel which has very direct benefits to the charity and poor communities in the area. The hotel also offers training to some of the older rubbish dump children, which gives them more opportunities to find employment in the growing tourism industry.

The owners and builders of The Lodge at Chaa Creek employ over 100 full-time employees from local communities which is a significant number given the remote location of the property. It’s like one big family which continues to grow around the lodge as the success story of the property continues. Chaa Creek believe tourism must be firmly rooted within the local community and must provide true and lasting benefit to all. Chaa Creek has always been committed to providing an ecologically educational, as well as recreational experience. The Natural History Centre, Butterfly Farm, and rainforest medicine trail are all an easy walk from the cottages and have made learning about the natural and cultural wonders enjoyable for thousands of overseas and local visitors and students in Belize.#

Such ethics, together with good service, have earned them numerous accolades over the years such as; one of the world’s top ten international properties in Eco-Escapes, among the world's top 50 Eco Lodges by National Geographic Adventure Magazine. They also hold high accreditations from Green Globe and Rainforest Alliance.

Environment
Victoria House takes an active roll in helping to care for its surrounding environment in areas such as: battery clean up and re-cycling and having recyclable 5 gallon bottles of purified water available for guests. Rainwater collection is important as it helps to minimize use of locally produced water and use only rain and groundwater for irrigation. They support the Green Reef project which is a non profit making organisation set up to protect Marine life and conserve the coral cayes that run parallel to the coast line of Belize. Belize is one of the few countries where you can see the shy but strangely beautiful Manatee or sea cow. These huge herbivores rely on a diet of sea grass and without groups such as Green Reef numbers could diminish even further and the manatee could disappear altogether.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
