the amazing things you'll be doing
Wildlife gardening is one element of a wider picture of wildlife conservation that we would like to promote in Italy. Gardens form important corridors linking urban, suburban and rural landscapes, allowing wildlife to move from one environment to another. Gardens can help to fill in gaps by providing environments that are otherwise missing locally.
During our daily lives we are involved in a routine that very often takes us away from nature and its beauty. Our attention is often focused on wildlife conservation away from our homes and we do not realize that even a small garden can make a difference to our local areas.
We will show you how to apply simple principles to enable you to carry out wildlife conservation in your garden, creating an environment that is attractive to various forms of wildlife such as birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects, mammals and so on.
The area chosen for these new programmes is located in central Italy; Italian countryside where the agricultural landscape dominates flat land close to the Thyrrhenian Sea; a land of olive groves and woods in the Lazio Hills, about 20 km from the sea and 40 km south of Rome. The course consists of discussions about wildlife gardening techniques, practical sessions and free time to practice. All participants will also be given a one year membership.
Accommodation: The accommodation is in typical Italian rural houses in Cori, a small village nestled on a hill still supported by the original ancient cyclopic walls. Here the remains of temples, ruins and churches accompany the visitor through to the 20th Century.

Environment
Our staff are trained and have scientific background related with ecology and conservation. You will learn how gardens form important corridors linking urban, suburban and rural landscapes, allowing wildlife to move from one environment to another. You will learn how gardens can help to fill in the gaps by providing environments that are otherwise missing locally. Encouraging people to develop a garden nature reserve means to encourage the conservation of wildlife. Our programmes is based on organic farming principles, therefore minimizing to zero the use of any chemical or other harmful substance. Community We provide our clients with advice on responsible travel behaviour and encourage them to share their cultures with the peoples they meet as a way of improving understanding of our two very different lifestyles. You will stay in local B&B and have the opportunity to stay with Italian families testing Italian cuisine and local products. We work with small groups only, minimizing the impact of tourism on a small pristine Italian community. Local guided visits to historical and archeological sites are booked with a local operator. We promote local product, by showing the beauty of the village and the local resources. We do organize workshops on how to make pasta, baskets, and so on. The area chosen in Italy is far from mass tourism. Throughout the trip we encourage the development of similar responsible tourism programmes in a pristine Italian village. We show to local people that natural resources are important and can provide an income if they are used as responsible tourism tools. |
Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people. We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel. 'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left). We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays. We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism. This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards. |
