introduction to Kanha camping safari, Kanha National Park, India

The Kanha National Park in the Mandla District of Madhya Pradesh spreads over 1,945 sq. km of dense sal forests, interspersed with extensive meadows and trees and clumps of wild bamboo. This is where you can spot the tiger in all his magnificence or feast your eyes on the rare Barasingha Deer amidst extensive grasslands.

It’s a unique camping safari experience introduced for the first time in India. Away from the luxury flashy lodges & resorts, it’s a true camping experience of the bygone days where its all about jungles, sights, sounds and smells of the Kanha bush. The camps offer full comfort in tandem with natural surroundings. It is a living experience of a life time in pristine wilderness as our ancestors did once.

Jungle Experience
Ecotourism in India is the usual package tours for group travellers and independent travellers with hotel accommodation being the core. The safaris are offered as package by the urban style hotels but lack the real input required to enjoy wildlife up close. What is required is a holistic experience, which is offered by us. We will be staying in a small camp of just 4 cottages run by the family staying in the same premises. The camp is situated just on the banks of the local Banjar river.

The Safari
Your camping safari begins right at your arrival in Jabalpur where you are driven to Kanha in a comfortable air conditioned vehicle. The camps are placed in the heart of wilderness at Kanha buffer. The service is luxurious with finest Indian cuisine being served in style. The habitat compliments wildlife at its finest. With luck one can come across tigers, leopards and bison that live in the neighborhood. At night sit under the stars and listen to the sounds of the jungle. The camp fire keeps you warm as you savor the surroundings – calm – serene – rejuvenating.

The excursions in the park are carried out in well equipped jeeps that which drove you to the camping site. Wildlife safaris in Kanha offer the best chance to see the tiger in India. That apart, a little luck fetches you a leopard or a bison which is a marvellous sight. Other interesting animals in Kanha are the sloth bear, hard ground Barasingha, Sambar deer, ubiquitous spotted deer, the wild dog, jackal; fox….the list is endless. Kanha abounds in birds’ resident and winter migrants. Bird watching is exciting in the park as well as in the surroundings of the camping site. Our trained naturalist assists you in all activities from park safaris to bird watching.

Adventure Safari
Our camping safaris are unique in that they are hundred percent eco friendly and offer luxury and comfort without taxing natural resources. We employ locals, the sons of soil who know everything about their amazing forest and its wildlife. We are instrumental in providing livelihood to local endemic communities and thus create a pool of conservationist who see reason in conservation of Kanha and its amazing wildlife.

how this holiday makes a difference
Environment:
We conduct safaris in style but in responsible manner. Our safaris stick to nature. The camp is located in finest habitat of Kanha National Park buffer are not permanent. They are set up for you and removed once the safari is over. This minimizes the impact on local surroundings. We use eco friendly solar lanterns and battery operated lanterns instead of electricity. Crystal clear water is fetched from the next door stream boiled and heated for use. All things in use are natural and recyclable. Waste water is put in a soak pit & is not drained directly.

The accommodation is eco friendly. The camp is made from the locally available material which are eco friendly. We leave the least impact as the camp is situated in the Buffer Zone. We do not use plastic but use recycled plastic bags if necessary. The use of solar and battery operated lanterns do not place a burden on natural resources. We plan to implement solar geyser for heating and solar panel for lightening. We purchase dead firewood from the forest department for camp fire and cooking. Note: The water fetched from the stream is not used for drinking. We prefer using the Mineral water for drinking as westerners have a common problem of stomach upsets.

To understand and value something close experience is necessary hence if one partakes in camping safaris he or she comes to understand the ecosystem and its elements how things work and how vital it is for our own survival. The trip experience is learning experience along with thrill of being in the wilderness watching magnificent birds and animals. Eco tourist are more active in conservation than others.

Community:
Ecotourism was until now an elite concept. Of late it has been realised that local communities/displaced communities play a vital role in nature conservation and conservation of National heritage. They are the original inhabitants of the places and if benefit accrues from jobs, business profits etc their out look changes from being alienated to being a part of the enterprise and conservation efforts. A partnership develops for conservation and protection.

The staff at the camp are all from the surrounding villages. With the combination of local knowledge, it now boasts of its host of in-house naturalists and field guides, who are best suited to orient travellers in protected area visitation. Local staff work as waiters, naturalists, cooks and field guides to assist in trekking.

On this trip we support an NGO called Jagriti who are involved in giving education, accommodation, clothing and food to small children who are found begging in railway stations. An amount of £10 per person goes to this NGO.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
