the amazing things you'll be doing
A brand new unique tour. A cultural cruise on a Turkish gulet - but with a difference. You’ll be helping to sail… under the expert guidance of the boat’s crew.

For the first week you’ll literally be learning the ropes - getting a feel for the boat and getting actively involved. Then in the second week you’ll be taking part in the celebrated Bodrum Cup Regatta - a 5 day race featuring over 100 classic wooden yachts - a truly stunning spectacle. During the regatta, half a day is spent sailing, while the other half is given over to relaxation or cultural adventures.

The trip combines all the great highlights of our standard gulet cruises - beautiful food (lunches are more basic to allow for the sailing), superb swimming opportunities, and spectacular landscapes.

If that weren’t enough, Peter, the owner of the travel company, will be onboard to personally escort you back in time into Turkey’s ancient past. The itinerary on this trip will be fluid and flexible - harnessing the wind and sailing is our priority, but we’ll also visit some breathtaking ruins, like the temple tombs of Kaunos, and the colonnades of Knidos.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Our boat is about 30 minutes from Dalaman airport at Göcek, a pretty harbour on the Bay of Fethiye. Welcome dinner on board.
Day 2-10:We head west along Turkey’s Mediterranean shore. Our journey takes us along the southern coast of Caria, studded with dynamic and influential cities back in Greek and Roman times. We’ll sail when we can and fit in a good number of swim stops and a selection of fascinating archaeological sites.
Day 11:We sail into the vast natural harbour of Bodrum, brimming with beautiful wooden gulets. We spend the day exploring Halicarnassus, site of one of the seven wonders of the world, with a special visit to the Crusader Castle of St. Peter, now one of the world’s best museums of underwater archaeology. A chance to do some shopping.
Day 12:Day 1 of the Bodrum Cup. Route is still to be announced.
Day 13:Day 2 of the Bodrum Cup.
Day 14:Day 3 of the Bodrum Cup.
Day 15:Day 4 of the Bodrum Cup.
Day 16:The final leg of the Bodrum Cup, followed by an evening awards ceremony and celebration.
Day 17:Transfer to Bodrum airport, some 40 minutes away.
how this holiday makes a difference
Environment
To help protect the environment, if we discover litter and detritus on a beach, path, etc. we pick it up, and then dispose of it properly. We regularly organise litter picking parties to tidy up a beach we are moored by and so help keep the coasts of Turkey and Greece and the Mediterranean beautiful, free from detritus, and safer for native animals. This is very much a sailing holiday – we will endeavour to harnass the wind and sail as much as we possibly can, thereby limiting the amount of time we will need to be motoring by engine, and so using minimal fuel throughout the whole trip.

Since we are travelling by boat, the amount of water available is limited and needs to be used sparingly. Only showers are provided, not baths, and we advise customers to reduce their use of water by taking short showers, and avoiding leaving the tap running for long periods. As a result the amount of water used during our cruises is significantly less than if travellers were staying in a typical large resort hotel.

From an office perspective, we use green electricity and aim to use as little as possible. We reuse and recycle materials (such as paper, cardboard, glass, tins and food waste) whenever feasible. We try to keep our paper waste to a minimum, and all our printing is done using recycled paper and/or on paper approved by the FSC, the Forestry Stewardship Council.

Community
We have been using the same gulet for the majority of our trips ever since we started organising tours in Turkey. We charter the gulet for almost the entire season, providing important employment and income to the boat’s crew and owner. As well as the boat, we have used the same locally owned ground-handling agent, employing Turkish staff, since 1996. This ensures that money goes directly into the pockets of local people, so it is the local community that benefits.

We try to provide tours that are above all educational tours - holidays with a cultural purpose. We believe that our tours in Turkey are a positive force, enlightening our customers about Turkey’s culture and above all its history. In stark contrast to most packages where tourists are rushed through ancient sites in order to get them into shops so guides can earn a sales’ commission, our whole focus is on exploring the historic sites.

Almost all the archaeological sites we visit on this trip are on the coast, so we can walk to them on foot. When we do head inland to explore an ancient city, we use a small local minibus that is owner operated. We think meeting and spending time with local people helps foster cultural exchange, interaction, and mutual understanding, promoting a better understanding of different worlds and culture. We provide much needed business to local cafes and shops in these places, thereby supporting local families, artisans, and village crafts.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
