introduction to Chamonix ski touring holiday, France

Explore the back country on skis or a snowboard with an off piste and ski touring adventure in Chamonix Mont Blanc.

Run by fully qualified IFMGA mountain guides, our ski touring adventures are aimed at skiers and boarders alike. For anyone who has some previous ski ability and is looking to explore further afield and see what the real back country is all about. It’s time to go back to the roots of skiing, avoid the lifts, get away from the crowds, and ‘earn your turns’.

Explore high mountain passes, ski through untouched forests and huge glaciers – where the only other living things you’ll spot are curious jackdaws. Forget lift accessed routes, this is what off piste skiing really means! Our dedicated ski touring weeks are run throughout the winter season, using our spacious and comfortable Chamonix centre chalets as a base for day tours and multi day trips high in the mountains. Courses are from intro level through to multi day adventures, ski mountaineering, and extreme skiing. Just ask for more info!

Best time to go
Traditionally the ski touring season around Chamonix Mont Blanc is in March and April, and this is when the mountain huts are open for multi day tours. But there is so much to explore earlier in the season too for 1 day ski touring adventures, often quieter and with some of the best snow of the season.

'Simply Solo':
We have finally twigged! There are so many solo travellers out there, busy keeping up with high stress jobs, sparing a few minutes to dream about fresh powder turns but never having the time to actually book a holiday - let alone organise a group of friends to go with. Adventure Base has come up with a plan!

'Simply Solo': Forget the stigma you may have of sad and lonely singles holidays, our trips are fun, classy, and aimed at busy people, not friendless ones! 6th till the 13th of March.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:One of our team will meet you on arrival in Chamonix Mont Blanc and help you get settled in to your gorgeous chalet accommodation. Take time to get unpacked and we’ll help make sure you have everything you need for your week’s ski touring adventure, including equipment hire and any last minute purchases, before heading off to meet your guide to run through the week’s plans. Enjoy an amazing dinner in one of Chamonix’s top Savoyard restaurants – soak up the Alpine atmosphere and Chamonix’s mountaineering history.
Day 2:Wake up to the smell of freshly baked croissants and brewing coffee in the chalet as our team prepare a breakfast to help keep your energy up for the week. Today’s the day to warm up your legs and get back into the world of ski touring. It’s a chance to practise using your kit - maybe touring up the from the valley at Grand Montets - before a fun descent through the trees back to where you started. Enjoy a relaxed pace and warm up slowly. Just ask one of our team for ideas if you’re not sure where to head to get your ski legs back.
Day 3:Your guide will join you at the chalet for a quick update and equipment check before heading to the aptly named ‘La Tour’ for you first ski tour of the week. Work up an appetite touring uphill, stopping for lunch at a mountain refuge on the Col de Balme, from where you’ll enjoy powder turn after powder turn in a mellow – but nonetheless spectacular - descent to the Swiss village of Trient. Don’t forget your passport as you jump on the bus home to France for a relaxing evening back at the chalet.
Day 4:Set off early for a ski touring adventure in the beautiful national park – Les Aiguilles Rouges. Your guide will choose one of a number of routes, which all end up in the lovely village of Le Buet. Our team of qualified guides have all trained extensively in the Mont Blanc area and know exactly where to find the best snow at any given time. Going up is tiring, but just remember the powder turns coming down make all the hard work oh so worth it!!!! The Berard Valley is one of the most stunning and unspoilt spots in the area – take a moment to enjoy the peace and quiet as you ski down. Your final descent through the forest follows a spectacular line of frozen waterfalls before popping out in the village, where a welcome hot chocolate (or beer!) awaits before you jump on the train back home.
Day 5:Safety First! Ski touring high in the mountains carries risks that you don’t find on maintained pistes – avalanches, crevasses, rock fall, and more. It’s important to be aware of the dangers in order to minimise the risks and maximise your fun! Starting with avalanche awareness, your guide will give you an introduction to making safe decisions in the mountains, before teaching you (or refreshing your knowledge) about transceiver use. Lunch in a traditional mountain refuge is an opportunity to ask plenty of questions, before heading back out to practise roping up for glacier travel and the theory of crevasse rescue – all in preparation for tomorrow’s big day in the high mountains.
Day 6:Don’t forget your camera as you head up towards the ‘Summit of Europe’ to ski tour on Mont Blanc’s spectacular glaciers. High in the mountains, roped up, your guide will help you descend the Midi ridge, before skiing down onto the world famous Vallee Blanche. Instead of heading straight down, this is where the uphill begins, as you strip off layers, strap on skins, and start touring up towards the Italian border. Going up is tough at altitude, but remember to stop and appreciate the mind blowing views around you! Your guide will pick the best route possible to make sure your final run down is truly memorable – enjoy turn after turn of steep, untracked, perfect snow, before re-joining the Vallee Blanche to cruise back down to the Montenvers train station for your final ride home. A well earned drink back in Chamonix and time to reflect on an amazing week’s ski touring … the perfect way to end your day! .
Day 7:Your final brekkie at the chalet before packing up and heading home, fitter, more relaxed, envigorated, and with the taste of all things snow fresh in your mind. We look forward to seeing you again soon for another winter snow sports adventure, or maybe in the summer for some alpine fun in the sun.
how this holiday makes a difference
Ski touring is the purest form of skiing – taking the sport back to its roots, strapping skins to your skis, unclipping your heels and heading off high into the mountains under your own steam. It’s the purest, most environmentally sympathetic - not to mention fun - way to enjoy the mountains in winter. Well away from the main bustle of the resorts, there are no chair lifts, no pistes, and no people. Just you, the mountains, and the amazing thrill of making first tracks down a face that you’ve spent 3 hours hiking to. The hard work is worth it a million times over when you find an untouched powder stash that’s all yours! Be warned – prepare to fall in love. Once you start touring there’s no turning back …

We work in partnership with local company, Dream Guides, who are all fully qualified IFMGA mountain guides (the highest possible qualification). Our guides are professional and dedicated ski mountaineers who have trained extensively in the Mont Blanc area and know the valleys and glacier systems inside out. They are a wealth of knowledge about the region - not only do they have inside info on where to find the best snow, but are full of facts about the mountains themselves, and the delicate balance of natural systems operating to keep the mountain ecosystem alive.

Community
Chamonix is the home of Alpinism and mountain guiding in Chamonix is an important part of the traditional culture of this historic mountain town. Being a guide in Chamonix is an important, respected profession in the valley, dating back to the birth of modern Alpinism. Maintaining that tradition and supporting local guides is an important part of our aim as a company.

We are committed to supporting the local economy. We don’t automatically opt for the cheapest supplier – it’s the closest, smallest, or friendliest who usually wins our business. In addition to Dream Guides, we work closely with a network of trusted local suppliers to help ensure your stay with us is fun, hassle free, and supportive of the local economy. From your breakfast croissant to the wine we serve at dinner, it’s all produced or supplied locally, and carefully chosen by us to support tradesmen and small businesses who we know.

Environment
Ski mountaineering is our biggest passion and we’re keen to share it with as many people as possible – in as sustainable a manner as we possibly can. We keep our ski group sizes to an absolute maximum of 6 people (often less), to help minimise the environmental impact of our holidays. We work hard to ensure that our ski touring holidays leave no mark on the beautiful mountains around us.

We encourage all our guests to think about the environmental impact of their actions during their stay, providing information about the local ecology, encouraging minimal use of water and heating, and offering easy access to recycling facilities, free public transport, and environmentally friendly methods of transport

We are a young company and a small team, offering a 100% tailor made service. We are fully integrated into the French system, and we all live year round in the Chamonix valley. Our aim is to grow slowly, sustainably, and in the most environmentally conscious way we can. As a company, we recycle, reuse, and actively promote the environmentally friendly option in terms of transport and travel around the valley. We support the Chamonix tourist office’s campaign for an ‘eco-friendly’ town. We run shared minibuses, use natural cleaning products (vinegar, baking soda etc), and run an almost entirely paper free office.

At every step of our company development, we consider not only the economic viability, but also the environmental viability – we want to keep our mountains the way they are for the rest of our company’s life, but also for our children and grandchildren to enjoy as we have.

Our company supports Cool Earth, and encourages all our guests to contribute too - offsetting their carbon emissions by sponsoring the replanting / conservation of rainforests. Our holidays maximise the use of ‘green’ transport including ski touring, snow shoeing and even parapente! We provide free public transport vouchers for all guests, and also run shared minibuses around the valley to help minimise the use of personal cars.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
