introduction to Malawi holidays, wilderness activity holiday

Join us for an adventure holiday in Malawi, enjoying a range of outdoor activities in a holiday designed to showcase the most wild and beautiful regions of this country. Suitable for adventurous travellers with a passion for the outdoors, this multi-activity adventure features trekking on Mount Mulanje, gentle mountain biking on the Zomba plateau followed by a spectacular descent into the Great Rift Valley, a thrilling wildlife safari in Liwonde National Park and sea kayaking on Lake Malawi’s clear blue waters. The adventure also includes a fascinating historical element - exploring the old colonial settlements of Blantyre and Zomba and the thriving tea plantations in the foothills of Mount Mulanje. Accommodation is in a range of charming small guesthouses, lodges and safari camps, with mountain huts on the Mount Mulanje trekking section.
day-by-day itinerary
Day 1:Blantyre. On arrival we enjoy a short city tour of Blantyre and continue to our accommodation at charming Lujeri Lodge, nestled in a tea plantation on the slopes of Mount Mulanje.
Days 2-4:Trekking on Mount Mulanje. Exploring a fascinating combination of high plateau, forested gorges, waterfalls and beautiful mountain trails. Our accommodation is a network of mountain huts in spectacular locations.
Days 5&6:Zomba plateau. We descend from Mount Mulanje and drive to the Zomba plateau, the old colonial administrative centre of Nyasaland and a beautiful region of forests and grasslands. You will also enjoy gentle mountain biking plus a visit to the bustling Zomba market.
Day 7:Great Rift Valley. Biking in the Great Rift Valley – spectacular descent from the Zomba plateau down into the Great Rift Valley and through woodland and rural villages and onwards into Liwonde National Park, where our accommodation is the superb Mvuu camp on the banks of the Shire River.
Day 8:Liwonde National Park. Explore Liwonde on a safari Malawi-style, with a variety of boat trips, wildlife drives and nature walks available from Mvuu Camp. Liwonde is Malawi’s finest National Park, offering the best wildlife safaris in Malawi.
Days 9-11:Lake Malawi. 3-day sea kayaking journey along the shores of Lake Malawi, exploring hidden coves and wonderful beaches.
Days 11&12:Domwe Island. We end our kayaking adventure with 2 nights of relaxation at a wonderful secluded camp on Domwe Island on Lake Malawi. Activities include swimming, snorkelling and a visit to the original Livingstonia mission at nearby Cape Maclear.
Day 13:Lilongwe. We leave Domwe by boat and then drive up the Great Rift Valley escarpment and onwards to Lilongwe, where we connect with international flights (safari extensions are available to other parts of Malawi such as Likoma Island, Vwaza Marsh and the Nyika plateau).
small group adventure holiday
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travellers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.
highly commended
This tourism business was Highly Commended in our 2009 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards - organised by responsibletravel.com in association with The Daily Telegraph, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine, of the Royal Geographical Society.

Since 2004, the Awards has recognised individuals, companies and organisations in travel making a big commitment to the culture and economies of local communities and helping to conserve biodiversity.
how this holiday makes a difference
Community
Mvuu Camp, our accommodation in Liwonde, is an excellent example of conservation tourism as many 100s of local people benefit directly and indirectly from a range of employment, wildlife monitoring and environmental education initiatives including a large school funded by guests of the camp. Your visit to Liwonde helps to support a visionary initiative called “Children in the Wilderness” where for several weeks each year the camp is closed and local schoolchildren come to learn about wildlife, conservation and sustainable living.

Through our local partners, we also support the work of conservation organizations who are active in the Mount Mulanje region, where some of central Africa’s rare cedar forests are protected, providing a vital water catchment area for the communities below. Similarly, our sea kayaking route along some of the most wild and spectacular coastline of Lake Malawi National Park provides vital income to some remote community-based accommodations, further strengthening the ties between local people, ecotourism and nature conservation. All the guides are locally trained and based.

Environment
The efforts of many of our tourism partners in Malawi on a local scale are helping to preserve the unique marine environment of Lake Malawi in the local areas of the lodge or camp.

Like any business we cannot eliminate our consumption of energy altogether, what we do instead is financially offset our carbon emissions by 110% through Climate Care. The nature of this trip which includes activities that are run on man-power e.g. sea kayaking, biking, trekking means that the impact is low once they arrive at the destination.

Tourism can be good and bad for destinations & local people.

We carefully screen every holiday against our criteria for responsible travel.

'Look behind the brochure' to find how each holiday makes a difference (see left).

We don't claim to be perfect - there is no global accreditation - but we've led the way since 2001 and screened 1000's of holidays.

We invite every traveller to write a review about their experiences and responsible tourism.

This valuable feedback is sent to the people who run the holidays. We keep a very close eye on it and take off holidays that don't live up to our standards.
